Executive Director’s PrideAugust is a month of carnivals, fairs, golf outings, raffles, street

parties and community garage sales, based upon the various club newsletters that have crossed this desk. July and August can be likened to the typical frenzy of the holiday season of November – December! It is a busy time to be a LION.

So much excitement is building within the Districts and throughout the State this month. Clubs are installing new leaders: at the District level new officers have been appointed; at the State level, new District Governors are settling into their roles and throughout the State, Lions are abuzz with organizing a large task force to welcome those attending the USA/Canada Grand Forum in Grand Rapids next month. We are kicking it into high gear with finalization of volunteers and last-minute details. This is a final “call for action”! Your involvement – whatever level it may be – is the key to our success as the Host State. If you have already volunteered, thank you. You will be receiving your assignments soon. Applications are still being taken and can be found on the Lions of Michigan website, www.lionsofmi.com .

The 17th Annual Leadership Institute will take place November 13-15, and is your opportunity to take advantage of the excellent training offered close to home. This popular workshop fills up quickly – send in your application today to guarantee your name on the list.

Finally, it gives me great pride that the Lions of Michigan have been honored with the Crystal Madonna Award on behalf of Ford Motor Company and Madonna University, as they recognize Lions as a humanitarian service organization. (See related article on page 5)

Congratulations, Lions! Through continued team work and determination, Lions remain dedicated to their call to service, benefiting our local communities and the great State of Michigan.

Yours in Service,Lion Wendy Burns, Executive Director

Becky Dahlke Named New CEO, Lions All State BandWelcome aboard, Becky Dahlke, new CEO for Lions All State Band!Becky’s experience with the Lions ASB covers many years, going back to

2001 when she traveled with the band as part of the medical staff along with her husband, Karl. (Pictured). Both Becky and Karl are deeply involved and committed to the Lions ASB, and in 2016 their two sons will be participating band members on the trip to Japan.

On their recent trip to Hawaii, Becky oversaw all aspects of this incredible tour, witnessing the excitement of all 57 student band members as they experienced every moment of the trip. From their visit to Pearl Harbor where a wreath was laid in honor of those lost, to marching not once, but twice in the International Parade, leading the way for Arizona and then returning to the lineup to march with Michigan; performances at the Shriners Children’s Hospital allowed the band members the opportunity to interact with the patients; to the Hawaiian tradition of an authentic Luau at Germaine’s. This trip was full of moments of pride, joy and triumph.

Club Growth - Club SuccessPDG Tim Anderson MD 11 GMT Coordinator

Increasing our service, or even maintaining our current level of community service, is solely dependent upon the individual clubs that make up our districts. Almost 100 years ago, this great organization of Lions started with a single club and grew into what we are today. Ironically, what seems to get lost many times is the fact that the clubs and the Lions within them are our past, present, and future!

Keeping our clubs healthy and our current members happy and active is a must to increase membership within our districts. This year we’re going to focus on our clubs, the communities and the Lions that service them. The greatest resource that Lions have is YOU! If you have an idea on how your club can better serve the needs of your community speak up share it. If you see a way to enhance your Lions experience, share it! The way to increase and strengthen our membership and create a feeling of happiness and worth within our clubs is to hear from you. Growth isn’t only measured by adding new members, but also by retention. Let’s have a year of club successes, which in turn will impact our communities in a positive way. We are continuing the gold and purple membership ribbons this year. If you already have a gold ribbon, please continue to wear it. For those of you that have a purple ribbon, LCI has a special incentive for you: a Centennial Pin that will be awarded to sponsors. This pin replaces the Michigan Safari pin that we have used the past two years. Please make sure your clubs order the current new member kits from LCI. The pin is included along with a special Centennial Member pin for the new Lion and these kits are available to your club for FREE. Congratulations to the 2014-2015 Michigan District Governors! Three districts ended the year with a positive in membership (A2, D2, D1) and one

broke even (A1). Four districts ended the year strong, proving it can be done!

GREAT job! Grow, Lions, GROW!

Past District Governors (PDG’s) AssociationPDG what comes to mind when you see those initials? For some it means

Permanent Dinner Guest or Power Done Gone, I believe PDG stands for providing leadership and mentoring new Lions as they become part of our Lions family. With a vast background in dealing with problem solving and working together as a team member PDG’s are a valuable asset to your district. Don’t hesitate to contact them if you need assistance with a clubs fundraising event or with issues or concerns you may have.

I invite any PDG not a member of the PDG Association to seriously consider becoming a vital part of our organization. Dues are very reasonable $10 per year that includes a copy of Who’s Who in Michigan Lionism. One way to give back is in September you have an opportunity to volunteer as a participant in the USA/CANANDA Lions Leadership Forum being held in Grand Rapids September 17-19. To volunteer in one of the many volunteer positions contact PDG Tim Anderson at 231-775-2939 or cell 231-920-9905 [email protected] or PDG Ron Papa 586-226-9066 [email protected]. If each of us does our part the work load will be distributed equally among the PDG’s.

I want to thank PDG RG Barnum for his five years of dedicated service while serving as President of the PDG Association, under his leadership several new projects and activities were instituted to include the annual clean up fix up at the Lions Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer. Any organization is only as strong as its leader and PDG R.G. you performed like a pro. Behind R.G.‘s success of course is First Lady Gloria, our sincere thanks for sharing R.G. with the PDG Association the past five years.

I also want to thank PDG Connie Shelton for her dedicated service as Secretary/Treasurer of our PDG Association; PDG Connie performed her duties with pride and passion always supported by her constant companion PDG Joe Wilson. Again PDG Connie thanks for all your hard work on behalf of the PDG Association of Michigan.

Stepping up to fill the position of Secretary/ Treasurer is PDG Norm Stutesman 11-B2. PDG Norm served as DG 2012-13 and I know he will do a great job alongside his 2nd VDG wife Barb. PDG Norm has already offered several suggestions to improve the PDG Association. Welcome aboard.

If any PDG has any suggestions or recommendations in regards to the PDG’s Association please contact me either at home 586-532-7385 or email [email protected] Helen Keller said it best “Alone we can do so little, Together we can do so much more.”

98th Lions International Convention - June 26-30, 2015 RecapAloha Michigan Lions. A great time was had by 85 Michigan Lions

amongst 20,000 plus Lions visitors at the recently completed annual

Page 4: lionsofmi.comlionsofmi.com/wp-content/uploads/...2015-word-doc.docx  · Web viewSeveral years ago a club member Chester Mitchell passed away and put Dearborn Heights Lions Club in

convention in Honolulu, Hawaii. The sun was bright, the weather was HOT and the hospitality of the Lions of Hawaii was outstanding.

Several of the highlights included the International Show featuring Kenny Loggins, Steve Augeri and Mickey Hart; the presentation of the Flag of Nations; International Parade (five hours plus) with our NEW BANNERS proudly displayed; the installation of President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada from Japan; ribbon pulling for our newly elected Governors from MD-11 and SD-10 and certainly not least, our Michigan Night held at Germaine’s Luau on the west shore of Oahu.

PID Esther LaMothe gracefully ended her two-year stint on the Board of Directors. Sadly, our two Michigan candidates for ID, PCC Jenny Ware (SD-10) and PCC Paul Hemeryck (MD-11) were asked to step back at this time. Hopefully, they will have better luck in Fukuoka, Japan in 2016.

Many people took the opportunity to sight see, not only Oahu, but enjoyed the other islands as well. There was probably not an ABC Store on Oahu that wasn’t visited by a Lions’ member.

Mahalo for this opportunity to serve as your chair once again. Thanks to all the committee who helped make this event another special memory.

SAVE THE DATE!2015 Lions Leadership/Graduate Institute November 13-15, 2015

The Lions Leadership Institute is a unique opportunity for individuals to learn and develop lifelong leadership skills, which can be applied to their job, their Lions Club, and their life.

Training equips Lions with the motivation, knowledge and skills to ensure that a high level of service is provided. It develops more leaders, and more leaders translate into greater service. Training makes Lions more effective.

Attending the Leadership Institute gives participants the tools and confidence to become more effective leaders. The skills learned can be applied to their job, their Lions Club and their everyday lives.

Participants learn key components of team building. By sharing ideas, success stories and humanitarian endeavors, Lions learn how to influence membership and become more open-minded and receptive to change.

How will the institute improve Michigan Lionism? The Leadership Institute provides each district with a pool of trained

leaders. Lionism is also improved by creating more responsive and dynamic Lions Clubs throughout Michigan.

AUGUST MEMBERSHIP FOCUS: STUDENTS AND LEOS LEOS - THE GREATEST YOUTH PROJECT FOR ANY LIONS CLUB!

By PDG Terry Walters, MD-11 Leo Chair Does your club sponsor a Leos Club? Why not? It is one of the greatest opportunities for any Lions Club and at the same time offers many opportunities to the youth in your community. Leos will develop valuable leadership skills and a strong commitment to service. There are two kinds of Leo Clubs:

1. Alpha Leos are for young people between 12-17 years of age. 2. Omega Leos are young adults between 18-30 years of age.

Page 7: lionsofmi.comlionsofmi.com/wp-content/uploads/...2015-word-doc.docx  · Web viewSeveral years ago a club member Chester Mitchell passed away and put Dearborn Heights Lions Club in

The students in Leo Clubs enjoy doing community service whether it is projects in school or in their community. They develop long lasting relationships with other Leos. By sponsoring a Leo Club, Lions have a positive influence on today’s youth and young adults. A Leo Club is a long lasting organization that is there to continually provide service to the community and also support activities of the sponsoring Lions Club. WHY SHOULD YOUR CLUB SPONSOR A LEO CLUB?

1. Leos may become future Lions Club Members.2. A Leo Club also makes the Lions more visible and known in their

community.3. Leos compliment the services that Lions Clubs provide to the

community.4. The youth are eager to get involved in their school and community.5. Leos will learn about leadership, teamwork, cooperation, and

collaboration in bringing about exciting changes.6. Many parents of Leos learn about Lions and become prospective

members of the local Lions Club.7. As Lions, we want to support our youth in different ways and

sponsoring a Leo Club will be both a learning experience Now is the time to consider starting a Leo Club either with Middle School students or High School students. You will find many school Principals and teachers who will support a Leo Club if you just ask and provide them the information that the District and MD-11 Lions can provide. Contact your District Chair now. MD-11 has had a great year in adding new Leo Clubs. There were 6 (six) new Leo clubs chartered in 2014-2015.They were: Mattawan, Marcellus, Paw Paw, and Sturgis from District 11-B2; Fruitport from District 11-C1; and Central Lake from District 11-E2. There are presently 26 Alpha Leo Clubs in MD-11. They are:

The MD-11 committee is hopeful that many clubs will consider sponsoring a Leo Club and that we have at least 5 new clubs chartered in 2015-2016. If your District does not have a Leo Club, please feel free to contact the MD-11 Leo Chair or MD-11 Leo committee for assistance. Congratulations and thank you to all the Lions Clubs that presently invest in their youth by sponsoring a Leo Club! Now is the time for all other Lion clubs to support the youth in your community and sponsor a Leo Club!

2015-16 International President No Translation Required: WE SERVE皆さんの国際会長を務めることを、大変光栄に思います。These Japanese words mean “I am honored to serve as international president.”

素晴らしい奉仕の 1年となることを楽しみにしています。That means “I look forward to a year of great service.”

So how do Lions in Japan say “We Serve”? Well, it’s “We Serve.” Our motto is not translated. Lions throughout the world proudly proclaim “We Serve.” The universality of our motto underscores that despite language and cultural differences we Lions share a common purpose. And although I am the 99th international president, each of my predecessors having had their own priorities and approaches, international presidents have shared a common commitment to service.

So I hope my year as president is like any other as Lions continue to serve with tremendous enthusiasm and impact. Yet I also hope to make a difference in how we serve. My theme is Bringing Dignity to Others Through Humanitarian Service. That’s something that has been inherent in Lions’ service since Melvin Jones first gathered Lions together. But by intentionally focusing on my theme and keeping it in the forefront we can be sure to maintain and even improve our commitment to service.

As a doctor, I have always been dedicated to healing and to do so while treating patients in a dignified manner. A good doctor not only treats illness but pays attention to the entire person—their worries, their concerns, their struggles. If you had asked me after many years as a doctor if I treated the whole person, I would have said, “Of course.” But it took a serious illness for me to re-evaluate my approach as a doctor. Likewise, as Lions we are dedicated to service, but reassessing our approach and focusing on the dignity of others in all we do will take our service to a new level.

I ask each of you this year especially to bring dignity to children. Through a project or program I ask you to make their lives better. Working together, 1.4 million Lions can help the next generation prosper and secure good health, find opportunity and achieve happiness.

Deceased Lion Continues To GiveSeveral years ago a club member Chester Mitchell passed away and

put Dearborn Heights Lions Club in his will. As part of his will the club decided to give away to three Dearborn Heights High School Senior a scholarship of $1,000.00. The applications are taken to the guidance counselors at all of the local high schools. Every year we receive about twenty applications. Based on several factors, grade point, community involvement, school involvement, etc. the committee decides which three applicants should receive a scholarship. The Dearborn Heights Lions club has been giving out scholarships for about seven years. Lion Louis Woiwode is the Lion who suggested that we give out scholarships and based on his recommendation and previous knowledge we began giving out the scholarships under his guidance. This year Chester Mitchell Scholarships were awarded to Fatima Bacharouche and Tariq Mekkaoui by the Dearborn Heights Lions Club.

Bedford Lions Have “Swagger”The Bedford Lions Club donated $5000 toward the building of the “CP

Swagger Shipyard” at Douglas Road Elementary School. The shipyard addresses the need for appropriate, adaptive playground equipment for the students of Douglas Road as well as the entire Bedford community. With 8-year-old Braden strapped to his back, Hunter completed a 57-mile walk across southern Michigan. The teen planned the trek, the Cerebral Palsy Swagger, to bring greater recognition to people such as Braden who are afflicted with cerebral palsy, a debilitating brain disorder.

Camp Leo Carnival NightEdwardsburg Lion members and Leos attended the annual “Camp Leo

Carnival Night”. This year we had a roulette wheel for the special needs kids to spin and see what prize they won. Once they got the hang of it they loved it and kept coming back for more spins, more prizes! Our club provided three games and a craft table that our Lion Denise Halgren kept the kids working on their project. Leo Macie Halgren and Leo Erika Howard each did a game and Lion Dave and Tanda Stiffler did the roulette wheel. What fun!!!! Camp Leo served a meal of hamburgers & hot dogs before the carnival night of game’s, snow cones, cotton candy, and popcorn. Several Lion clubs bring in games for the kids to play or snow cone machines, cotton candy or popcorn machines. By the smiles on the kid’s faces they were just having a great time. The evening ends with the kids doing their own “talent show”. The kids even ask the crowd to get up out of their seat and participate!

South Haven Black River Lions Club were also at the Camp Leo Carnival Night. Lion Pat McFarland and wife Arline along with Lion President Rick Young and wife Lion Treasurer Carol Young had a ball getting the kids to play the golf game that they brought.

Three Rivers was another of the many clubs that participated in Camp Leo. What an absolutely fun filled evening it was!

Lions Pitch In When Disaster Strikes In PortlandWe often hear of disasters around the country, just not in our own

backyard. The tornado that touched down in Portland Monday June 22 damaged 70 homes, 12 businesses and four churches. Lions began their contributions to the Portland disaster by feeding clean-up crews Wednesday, June 24. Members of Lyons Muir Lions set up in front of the damaged Rite Aid with 150 hot beef on a bun sandwiches, chips, cookies, brownies and lots of cold water as a token to those volunteering and paid alike to clean up the damaged buildings, debris and fallen tree branches.

Rockford Leo’s In Service This Summer For Community

There have been some hard workings Leo’s in Rockford this summer. One project they’ve completed is the renovation of the Rockford Middle School Courtyard below which had not been attended to for many years. Leo’s cleaned, weeded, mowed and seeded the lawn, painted the benches and tables and planted a flower garden. The garden now flourishes. The Leo’s and their parents were also able to help with the Rockford Reading Festival June 6 by dressing up as storybook characters to make the festival come alive. They participated as volunteers with the Hill View Center Program helping other students from the Hillview Community continue with a summer reading and math program in mid—June. About the same time the city of Rockford held its annual Start of Summer Celebration where the Leo’s were front and center painting the parade float, walking in the parade and manning the children’s tent which housed activities for younger children attending the festivities.

St. Louis/Alma Lions Support 17th Annual Joe Scholtz Memorial Free Fishing DerbyEric Stafford -- The Morning Sun

Fishing lines hung like a spider’s web over the Pine River at Leppien Park in St. Louis for the 17th Annual Joe Scholtz Memorial Free Fishing Derby.

Although the event has been going on for almost two decades, it was only in 2012 that it was re-named after the late Joe Scholtz. Scholtz was the mayor of St. Louis and founded the free fishing derby. He passed away in 2011. “Joe started it to get people involved with the river because of the mess,” said volunteer Adam Musselman.

Musselman has participated in the derby with his young so the past six years, but it wasn’t until the St. Louis/Alma Lions Club took over last year that he started volunteering. For him, watching the kids have a good time is what he enjoys most.

“That’s what it’s really all about, good family fun and it gets people out of the house and fishing,” he said. Over the years, the derby has turned into a pretty big day, he said. One year they had about 450 people attend, which made it the largest in the state for a free, one-day event. Last year, 346 people registered. This year there were not as many. However, the turnout was still decent considering the weather wasn’t ideal.

Everyone who attended got a T-shirt and one of the many prizes. All of which were donated. The Alma Masonic Lodge even provided six bikes to be won. Musselman handled the prize purchasing and distribution. “Today, I’m like Santa,” he joked.

Trophies were also given to the first, second, and third biggest fish caught as well as who caught the most. Categories were based on age. For kids 0-6, Kim Feeley won most fish caught and biggest fist. Quenton Rosealez caught the second biggest and Ezra Rosealez got third.

For kids 7-12, James Feeley won most fish caught. Madison Johnson caught the biggest, Josh Wagle caught the second biggest, and Trey Most got third. For ages 13-18, Hunter Feeley caught the most fish and the biggest one.For adults, Rachel Maxon caught the most fish and Tim Thompson won biggest fish.

A city presentation dedicating a memorial rock to Scholtz also took place at the event.

Jane Keon, secretary for the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, said she shares Scholtz’s philosophy of preserving the river. She said he wanted to change the fact it had become a place to avoid, which is why he started the free fishing derby. “We need to bring back the recreation on the river and bring people back.” Keon said events like the derby show they’re serious about the clean-up and praised supporters. “I’m thrilled

the St. Louis/Alma Lions Club and other have kept this going,” she said. “I’m glad they’re keeping it in his memory.”

THE GRAND FORUM NEEDS YOU!SEPTEMBER 17-19DEVOS PLACEGRAND RAPIDS, MI

Planning for the Grand Forum continues to come together. Host Committee fundraising pins are available for $5 each. Details are falling into place for a first class Forum. Planning is on track.

New on Thursday will be a Strides Walk for diabetes awareness and a carnival opening night. Everyone gets a Lions Handbook. Friday will let the Lions loose on the 90 restaurants around the convention center for dinner. Lunch will feature International President Yamada. Saturday evening’s banquet will conclude with a big surprise. In between is the best opportunity in Lions for fun, fellowship and learning.

We still remain a long way from our registration and volunteer goals. Lack of formal commitment by Michigan Lions is a critical problem for manpower allocation. Many Lions at conventions said they would register and volunteer. A few walked the walk. So far, most just talked the talk. I have literally heard it over 100 times, yet we still have only about 90 completed volunteer forms submitted to the Host Committee. If the Manpower Committee does not have your completed form, you will not be in the schedule matrix and you will not receive an assignment. Please, please help us by completing and submitting your registration and volunteer forms.

The Forum will rebate $50 to each volunteer registered for the Forum who the Host Committee Chair certifies put in at least 8 hours volunteer time. Rebates should be mailed in October.

When you volunteer you can choose your day(s) and activity. The earlier you complete and return the volunteer form, the more likely you are to get your preferred date and activity on our master schedule. Not all volunteer opportunities are inside the convention center. We also need people in hotel lobbies, at Welcome Centers, the airport, and to help with set up before the Forum begins. For the Lions of Michigan to show the Lions of the rest of the country and Canada the Grand Forum, we need another 100 volunteers. REGISTER NOW TO JOIN US IN GRAND RAPIDS. You can complete the volunteer registration form online at the Lions of Michigan website. Email it directly to PDG Tim Anderson at [email protected]. Thank you.

In 2007, the Council of Governors provided the Host Committee $17,000 left over from the tax to fund the LCI Detroit Convention for expenses. We do not have that or any commitment from the COG to help cover our expenses other than a line of credit we need help to repay. We suggest a donation of $100 per club be made to the Grand Forum payable to Lions of Michigan to help replace the direct state donation. We know that not every club can or will make a $100 donation. We ask each club to do its best to support Lions of Michigan and for those clubs that can donate more to donate more. Send your check payable to Lions of Michigan to Host Committee treasurer, PCC Paul Hemeryck at the State Office.
