FEBRUARY CHAPTER MEETING RECAP

Wow! A Chapter full house for a high tech talk on Bluetooth and Quattro 4.0.

ClearSounds representative Margo Zena explained how Bluetooth is a one on one system and presented other information that helps us all move beyond the sound barrier.

She explained how the Quattro requires a t-coil but can stream your phone, your TV, the iPad, the computer and more without a necklace. It even works for earbuds (popular with younger folks) without a t-coil. If you did attend and not fully process the information or if you did not attend and want to know more, ClearSounds will be at the Hearing Tech Expo on March 7.

Loud & ClearNEWS FROM HLAA & THE WORLD

HLAA FOUNDER’S BOOK -- THE “INVISIBLE CONDITION”

Join us in a yearlong celebration of Rocky Stone, HLAA’s Founder.

To celebrate Rocky and the 35th birthday of the Hearing Loss Association of America, our Chapter will be remembering Rocky and getting to know his legacy.

In the preface to “An Invisible Condition - The Human Side of Hearing Loss”, he wrote:

“I believe that any occurrence in life which makes us focus on the meaning of life, the few years we are here on earth, and what we are going to do with the time available, is healthy. I believe that hearing loss is such an occurrence. Yes, I am a dreamer, but with a critically analytical mind. Tomorrow is built on today.”

LEGAL NEWS—Garbled Captions are No Fun

But the FCC is doing something about it.

New FCC rules for TV closed captioning now ensure that viewers who are deaf and hard of hearing have full access to programming, address captioning quality and provide guidance to video programming distributors and programmers. The rules apply to all television programming with captions, requiring that captions be:

Accurate: Captions must match the spoken words in the dialogue and convey background noises and other sounds to the fullest extent possible.

Synchronous: Captions must coincide with their corresponding spoken words and sounds to the greatest extent possible and must be displayed on the screen at a speed that can be read by viewers.

Page 12: Listen - Hearing Loss Association of Sarasotahlas.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Listen-Up-Templ… · Web viewListen!Up FEBRUARY, 2015 FOURTH ANNUAL HEARING TECH EXPO Saturday, March

Complete: Captions must run from the beginning to the end of the program to the fullest extent possible.

Properly placed: Captions should not block other important visual content on the screen, overlap one another or run off the edge of the video screen.

The rules distinguish between pre-recorded, live, and near-live programming and explain how the standards apply to each type of programming, recognizing the greater hurdles involved with captioning live and near-live programming.

See-- http://www.fcc.gov/guides/closed-captioning

If you see garbled captions, contact the station first and if no satisfaction is received, file an FCC complaint (they do read them and they do follow up) at: https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=36040

WFLA, TV8 has recently outsourced its captions and the quality has fallen. If you see this in local news and programming, contact the Station Manager, Andy Alford and be specific-- [email protected]

ADVOCATE ADVOCATE ADVOCATE

Chapter members should monitor TV8 news and local programming. The stories are often not captioned and if they are, the captioning runs behind and drops half of the story. The complaint procedure is under strict FCC rules for station response. If you do file a complaint to any station:

1. Provide details of the date and time and channel of incorrect or non existent closed captioning that is to be reported to the station.2. The station is required to follow up within 60 days of when the issue with closed caption occurred.3. If the issue resolved, fine, if not, then contact the FCC and provide all the written documentation from steps 1 through 3 for follow up.4. If you opt to send this list directly to the FCC, they will in turn forward the list to the station for follow up.5. The station has thirty days to respond to an FCC complaint(s) regardless of source of complaint.

If our local station, ABC TV7, has failed captions, contact Station Manager Jack Bennington at— [email protected]

Other local stations are:

WTSB, TV10, Station Manager, Lee Griffin at-- [email protected], TV 11, Director of Engineering, Lowell Decker at-- [email protected]

The FCC requires all broadcasting stations to post an email address for caption complaints.

MEDICAL NEWS –

HLAA recently reprinted an article published in January by the New York Times. It quotes HLAA Board Member and leading hearing loss researcher, Dr. Frank Lin. The article reviews a cross section of hearing loss research addressing loss from meningitis, Maniere’s, age and more. It is lengthy but if you have an interest in the state of research, it is an excellent overview.

From Vertigo to Tinnitus, Ear Ailments Are New Focus for DrugsBy ANDREW POLLACK JAN. 9, 2015

There is a huge need, some experts say. About 48 million Americans have a meaningful hearing loss in at least one ear; 30 million of them have it in both ears, said Dr. Frank R. Lin, an associate professor of otolaryngology and geriatric medicine at Johns Hopkins University. That figure is expected to increase as baby boomers grow older.

A drug to treat or prevent age-related hearing loss “will be something that people take every day for the rest of their life,” said Edwin W. Rubel, a professor of hearing science at the University of Washington and co-founder of a start-up called Oricula Therapeutics. “Even if it could just delay age-related hearing loss by five or 10 years, that would be wonderful.”

Of course, many people with hearing problems can use hearing aids or, for serious cases, cochlear implants. But the implants require surgery and many people do not like or use hearing aids, so drugs could be an alternative.

Page 14: Listen - Hearing Loss Association of Sarasotahlas.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Listen-Up-Templ… · Web viewListen!Up FEBRUARY, 2015 FOURTH ANNUAL HEARING TECH EXPO Saturday, March

“Glasses can usually return you to 20/20 while hearing aids don’t return you to normal hearing, not even close,” said Kathleen C.M. Campbell, a professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

But challenges remain. Efforts in the past to develop ear drugs, to the extent they were made, largely failed. The inner ear, which is crucial to both hearing and balance, is almost impenetrable, making it difficult to study or for drugs to enter.

“It’s a teeny organ encased in a really, really hard bone,” said Dr. Hinrich Staecker, professor of otolaryngology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. “The whole inner ear fits inside the tip of your pinkie.”

Executives at the new companies say that genetic and animal studies are revealing more about how the ear works. They note that the pharmaceutical industry once also neglected the back of the eye. Now there are blockbuster drugs like Genentech’s Lucentis and Regeneron’s Eylea that are injected into the eye to stave off blindness from retinal diseases.

The ear, they say, is the new eye.

Crucial to hearing are about 15,000 so-called hair cells in the cochlea, part of the inner ear, which convey signals to the auditory nerve leading to the brain. The hair cells can be damaged by loud noise, by disease, by exposure to certain medicines, or simply by the passage of time. And the hair cells do not regenerate, so once they are destroyed the loss is permanent.

But maybe not for Rob Gerk, a 31-year-old man in Denver who lost most of his hearing when he had meningitis as a toddler. He is the first patient in a clinical trial of gene therapy aimed at regenerating hair cells. The trial is being sponsored by Novartis and uses a gene therapy developed by GenVec, a Maryland biotech company.

In late October, Mr. Gerk underwent surgery by Dr. Staecker at the University of Kansas to infuse viruses carrying a gene called Atoh1 into his right inner ear. Atoh1 causes cells in a fetus to become hair cells. It is hoped that some of the supporting cells in the inner ear will take up the gene and turn into hair cells.

The companies said it would take two months to tell if the therapy was working, a time period that just passed. Mr. Gerk said there was no significant change but there may have been more subtle effects. “I have incidents where I think I’m hearing a new sound or hearing sound differently than I did before,” he said by email.

Other companies are trying either to improve hearing or prevent loss of hearing from trauma like loud noises or exposure to the chemotherapy drug cisplatin or a widely used classof antibiotics known as aminoglycosides.

Auris Medical, a Swiss company, said that its experimental drug AM-111 improved hearing and speech discrimination compared with a placebo in people who were treated within 48 hours of suffering a hearing loss. But the drug was effective only for those with serious hearing loss, not mild or moderate. The drug was delivered by a single injection through the ear drum into the middle ear, from which it diffused into the inner ear.

Page 15: Listen - Hearing Loss Association of Sarasotahlas.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Listen-Up-Templ… · Web viewListen!Up FEBRUARY, 2015 FOURTH ANNUAL HEARING TECH EXPO Saturday, March

Sound Pharmaceuticals of Seattle says its drug, intended to reduce oxidative damage to the ear, helped prevent temporary hearing loss compared with a placebo in young adults with normal or near-normal hearing who listened to four straight hours of loud music through headphones.

Autifony Therapeutics is conducting early trials of a daily pill aimed not at hair cells but at helping the brain better interpret signals from the auditory nerve.

“You can only hear what your brain allows you to hear,” said Barbara Domayne-Hayman, chief business officer at the company, which was spun out of GlaxoSmithKline and is based in Britain. “We’re basically trying to get the neurons to fire properly again.”

One sponsor of research in the area is the Defense Department, which cannot redeploy many soldiers because they have hearing loss. At Fort Jackson, S.C., drill sergeant trainees fire 500 rounds from extremely loud M16 rifles over the course of 11 days. Dr. Campbell of Southern Illinois University is running a study there to test if d-methionine, an amino acid that is said to reduce oxidative damage, can help preserve their hearing.

Companies are also working on drugs for tinnitus, in which sound is perceived without a source of the sound being present. Roughly 10 percent of American adults, or 25 million people, have experienced at least one episode lasting five minutes or more in the last year, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Tinnitus can be caused by many things, including hearing loss. Treatments include behavioral therapy and devices that can mask the sound. But many of those just help people tolerate the condition, not get rid of it. Some drugs like steroids and lidocaine are used off label.

Auris is in late-stage trials of AM-101, a derivative of the anesthetic ketamine, which it hopes will dampen the aberrant signaling in the auditory nerve that is perceived as tinnitus. In a midstage trial, the drug, injected into the middle ear, was not more effective overall than a placebo. But a subset of patients whose tinnitus was caused by trauma or infection said the drug made the sound in their ears softer, less annoying and less disruptive of sleep.

Investors appear to be cautious given the challenges. Auris went public on Nasdaq in August at $6 a share, using the trading symbol EARS. The stock is now trading at about $4.

Otonomy’s stock, by contrast, has roughly doubled since its August initial public offering. That is perhaps because for now it is pursuing what might be more tractable problems.

When Mr. Lichter suffered his first attack of Ménière’s, he received steroids, a commonly used off- label treatment. But when the drug is injected into the middle ear, patients have to lie on their sides for 30 minutes and not swallow to try to keep the drug from draining into the throat through the Eustachian tube.

Otonomy, based in San Diego, developed a way to deliver the steroids as a gel that does not readily drain away after injection. The company has started the final stage of trials for the Ménière’s product. It hopes its first product — it will apply for regulatory approval in the first half of this year — could be a gel form of an antibiotic to be injected to treat middle ear infections, an alternative to ear drops.

Page 16: Listen - Hearing Loss Association of Sarasotahlas.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Listen-Up-Templ… · Web viewListen!Up FEBRUARY, 2015 FOURTH ANNUAL HEARING TECH EXPO Saturday, March

Mr. Lichter said the intense bouts of vertigo, which left him bedridden two or three times a week, have not returned in four years. But he has constant ringing in his left ear and can barely hear through it.

Mr. Lichter, a managing director at Avalon Ventures in San Diego, said that although he had helped start 15 or 20 companies, “This is the one that is special to me.”

The Private Eyes Movie Club meets on Third Tuesdays.

This month, the Club will “meet” on Tuesday, February 17 around 4:30 PM at the Hollywood 20 on Main St. in Sarasota. A roundtable review--and other conversation-- follows at a restaurant within short walking distance of the theatre.

The exact time and movie will be announced to Private Eyes Members (membership is free— signup with link below) by e-mail and on Facebook. Last month, the Club met at 3:50 to see “Foxcatcher” with dinner at Appleby’s next door after the movie.

MAGICAL MOMENTS

The Chapter’s Movie Club got an extra treat on Tuesday night, January 20, when they dined next to the Sarasota Magicians Association. Everyone passed on dessert, so five of the magicians stepped in to entertain the group with some of their favorite tricks and several of the Private Eyers left completely amazed. Their group meets at Appleby’s every Tuesday night so future Movie Club outings may have the same opportunity.

Of note, Hollywood 20 now offers CaptiView as well as Sony Caption Glasses. CaptiView is much improved, so the very few people who did not like the glasses now have an alternative. Some have found that CaptiView for some reason has more consistent delivery of the dialogue.

“Private Eyes” free membership is limited to HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee members. First time “Private Eye” members are entitled to a free movie ticket at their first movie. To receive the notice of the movie selected, which goes out the weekend before the movie date, contact Anne Taylor. Anne uses the following email address for Private Eyes -- [email protected]

The Chapter’s “Between the Covers Book Club” meets twice a year, Spring and Fall. The next book for the Spring meeting will be announced soon but you can start reading now. The selection is an Amazon 4.5 star book entitled Listen with the Heart - Relationships and Hearing Loss by Michael A. Harvey (4 1/2 stars).

Dr. Harvey has addressed HLAA in the past and the book is summarized by Amazon as follows: “ While distressing for an individual, hearing loss also takes a heavy toll on family and friends. These stories chronicle the unique challenges of hearing loss in interpersonal relationships, including communication, self-identity, and how to continue sharing and growing in these relationships. Many shared activities, such as enjoying music, whispering sweet nothings to a lover, and hearing children's voices are deeply missed by both the hearing and hearing-impaired relationship partners. This book illustrates the power of relationships to transform people and how each party has unparalleled opportunities to grow in profound and unpredictable ways”

This is a good read for members whether you are able to attend the Book Club meeting or not.

LOOPED LOCATIONSTravelling in 2015?

Stay in the loop. There is a great website that will let you know about all 60 looped locations in northeastern Ohio or the 23 locations in the Philadelphia area. Check ahead and enjoy your visit!

http://www.aldlocator.com/

They may not have them all but the site is a great help even when home. A MapQuest zoom on the site can bring in the locations very near to you. A zoom in to Gulfgate area of Sarasota brought up the following locations including Glenridge which has some really fine performances scheduled as well as Michael’s on East Ballroom.

Remember our Mission includes advocacy—a “thank you” goes a long way in reinforcing the looping of the community. The list follows:

OUTREACH - FARMERS MARKET

Outreach -- Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market

Outreach Events Keep the Chapter Busy

The Chapter’s outreach program covers over 100 events a year. Please contact Dave Donnelly to “pay it forward” by attending events with our table and materials and informally offering education, advocacy and support to members of our community. With the assistance of Mark Selis, the Chapter has scheduled 10 outreach events in both January and February. We need some help from 9:00 AM to Noon on many of those days. “On the job” training is available at any Farmers Market day or special event. Let Dave Donnelly know if you can help HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee by contacting [email protected] .

Farmers Market -- Saturday, February27- - 7 AM to 1 PM

Our monthly information and support booth at the Sarasota Farmer’s Marker offers an opportunity for people to learn how to address their hearing loss.

The Chapter has a permanently assigned site, 1920 State Street between Lemon and Pineapple.

There will be free hearing screening each month by one of HLAA-Sarasota/Manatee’s Pro Partners. If you have a friend who needs hearing help and cannot make one of our meetings, please suggest they visit us here.

Listen Up HLAA-S monthly newsletter offers Education, Advocacy and Support for the 135,000 people with hearing loss in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. For more information visit www.HLAS.org or call 941-706-4312. For comments or suggestions, contact editor RichardN. Williams at [email protected]. Opinions expressed in “Listen Up” are those of the Editor or Author. Mention of goods and services in articles or advertisements does not mean the Hearing Loss Association of America or the Hearing Loss Association of America- Sarasota Chapter endorses same nor should exclusion suggest disapproval
