“Just hear those sleigh bells jinglin’, ring-ting-tinglin’ to…” While it might not be a white Christmas just yet; it certainly has been lovely weather to do anything together thus far this season. Christmas Carols are in full-swing since the Thanksgiving holiday and the decorations are popping up all over town. If you’re like me, the list of festivi-ties planned is piling up. It’s the one time of the year when I get carte blanche access to “shop ‘til I drop”! As always, I certainly

wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to encourage all of you to shop Local. Unique and thoughtful are always well-received when it comes to gift giving. With hot spots like Pink Chandelier, Tin Rose, and C.B. Finchers all in our backyard, you’re sure to find some great gift ideas. Burleson Outdoor Power has a host of items for the DIY men in your life. Plus, there are a dozen other Local shops that keep your driving radius small. Even better, we have coupons inside for all that will definitely make a difference in your budget.

Then comes the fun part – the gift-wrapping! I love to get as creative as possible when it comes to wrapping presents. If you’re like my husband, you’re more likely to spend 45 minutes wrapping one pres-ent, with newspaper, a stick-on bow, sharpie name tags, and it still looks like something exploded in your recycle bin. (Bless his heart!) I like to recruit the kiddos when we do it. They may not have the most attention to detail, but it’s such a wonderful time spent together and they love the fact they have a role in the season.

I want to say thanks to Adrianne Lowes from The Ritz for hosting the 2nd Annual Wine Crawl in Burleson last month. What a suc-cessful and fun event that was for our community! There were well over 2,000 attendees this year and everyone I’ve spoken to had a great time. Well done, young lady, well done! Speaking of getting together, let us all keep in mind the reason for the season. Christmas is a birthday celebration for the One who makes our life possible and we’ll certainly be holding our loved ones close throughout this season. Try to slow down where you can and work in an extra hug or two. Share your smiles, toss a wave to passers-by, and maintain that cheer as often as you can. From all of us at the Local Life family, we certainly wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

For Christians, Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. While the Bible doesn’t specifi-cally address the actual date of Christ’s birth it does give clues. In fact, it’s believed that no one even bothered with knowing this date for close to 300 years as it was Christ’s death that would become the significant date in His life. Then there is Saint Nicholas, the patron Saint of Russia known for his red cape and flowing white beard. And who could forget the singing? Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without caroling in the streets. For the sake of my own curiosity and your scores in a future Trivial Pursuit™ game I hit the research halls of Local Life (ok, Google) to uncover some facts behind the traditions.

SAINT NICK

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

Ý While the legend of Saint Nicholas began to fade among Europeans, it re-mained alive and well in Holland. The Dutch would refer to him as Sinterklass and children would leave their shoes out over night to be filled with gifts and treats. Dutch col-onists brought these traditions to America in the 17th century and the Anglican name “Santa Claus” emerged.

Ý Saint Francis of Assisi is said to be the “father of caroling”. In 1223, Saint Francis set up a nativity scene at his church and soon other churches followed suit. Before long people began acting out the events of the birth of Christ and the actors would sing praises, ultimately walking through the city streets sharing their gift of song.

Ý “Gloria in exelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis.” These are the words that rang out during the birth of Christ, therefore, considered to be the first ever Christmas carol.

Ý Told the day before Christmas that the church organ was broken, Austrian Priest Joseph Mohr was compelled to write a song that could be sung to guitar music. He wrote Silent Night because he could not stand to think of Christmas without music.

Ý One of his first acts of charity, Saint Nicholas left gold coins in the stockings of 3 peasant girls who couldn’t afford dowries. Their wet stockings had been left hanging by the fire to dry. You know the rest….

Ý In 1827 Clement C. Moore wrote the poem, A Visit From Saint Nicho-las, and later published it as “The Night Before Christmas” as a gift for his

children.

The Christmas TreeÝ While many cultures regularly practiced

bringing evergreens into the home during winter solstice as a symbol that spring was coming soon, it is Germany that is credited with the first Christmas tree. Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, was walking home one night preparing a sermon when he was awe-struck by the brilliance of stars twinkling through a patch of evergreens lightly dusted with

snow. To

recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and placed lighted candles on the branches to serve as starlight.

Ý The German settlers of Pennsylvania first brought the Christmas tree to the states around 1747, although they were not well received by most Americans. In the early 1830’s the German settlers began a community tree display that many viewed as a pagan symbol. By 1900, Christmas trees were almost universally found in every home in the country.

Ý Christmas tree lights were used only 3 years after Thomas Edison gave his first public display of the electric light in 1879.

Ý The first tree at Rockefeller Center was placed in 1931. It was a small unadorned tree placed by construction workers at the center of the construction site. A

year later, another tree was placed there, this time with lights. These days, the giant Rockefeller Center tree is laden with over

25,000 Christmas lights.

At the end of the day, the Christmas holiday season is about spending precious time with your loved ones and celebrating all kinds of traditions your family and friends have developed over the years. Now that you’re armed with a little

background knowledge on some of the more popular symbols I hope you’ll be able to enjoy them even more. Of course, one thing unmentioned was the food. The dinner table is a common staple of the holiday season and more people gather around the table across the world at Christmas time than any other time of the year. So, take heart in knowing as you celebrate Christmas this year that you are not alone. In fact, it’s a cherished moment in our lives each year where peace rings loudest and love and thoughtfulness dominate the emotional spectrum. If that doesn’t warm your heart than I don’t know what would. This year when you share a statement of Merry Christmas, take a moment to reflect what that means and know that you are certainly not alone in this sincere salutation. Merry Christmas, my friends, Merry Christmas!

RANDOM FACTSÝ In 1856, Franklin Pierce – the 14th

President of the United States brought the Christmas tree tradition to the White House.

Ý Xmas was never a matter of removing the name of Christ from the equation. X is the Grecian word for Christ, so Xmas literally translates to “Christ’s Mass” or Christmas for short.

Ý The state of Alabama was the first to declare Christmas an official state holi-day in 1836. Oklahoma was the last. They didn’t declare Christmas a holi-day until 1907.

Ý If you counted all the gifts that were given in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” you would realize that the number of gifts being presented were 364 in total, thus a gift was given for each day of the year.

Ý In A.D. 320, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ.

Ý The traditional three colors of Christ-mas are green, red, and gold. Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.

Ý According to the United Nations Chil-dren’s Fund (UNICEF), there are 2,106 million children under age 18 in the world. If there are on average 2.5 chil-dren per household, Santa would have to make 842 million stops on Christmas Eve, traveling 221 million miles. To reach all 842 million stops, Santa would need to travel between houses in 2/10,000 second, which means he would need to accelerate 12.19 million miles (20.5 bil-lion meters) per second on each stop. The force of this acceleration would re-duce Santa to “chunky salsa.”
