  • Why honor Gallery Players?

    Gallery Players Committee

    Gala Committee

This year the JCC Board of Trustees has chosen to combine forces with our Gala and our Gallery Players, the JCC’s theater program, to celebrate Gallery’s 70 years of outstanding production in our community. Gallery Player’s proud history is detailed in this brochure. We know you will be inspired by it. For all its 70 years, Gallery Players has been the JCC’s window to the community. Many people enter the JCC for the first time to see one of our productions. Gallery Players connects performers to each other and to the community; and connects the community to Jewish history and culture.

For 70 years our program has offered youth and adults the opportunity to experience and be part of, live theater. We educate, we delight and we inspire. We hope you will join us in supporting this year-long celebration!

Played out against the backdrop of deadline reporting and journalistic integrity, the critically acclaimed The Soap Myth by Jeff Cohen questions who has the right to write history—those people who have lived it and remember, those who study and protect it, or those who would seek to distort its very existence? And finally what is all our responsibility once we know the truth? Live stage reading: Sunday, May 5th, 2019 - 3:00pm

The African savannah comes to life on the Gallery Players stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle... and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. After a newspaper cost hike at the expense of the newspaper boys, one of them, Jack Kelly, plus an independent newspaper owner Kather-ine Plummer, organize a strike against the big publishing companies. • History

    Gallery Players Mission Statement

In the late 1940’s, the foremost community theater in Columbus was the Players Club Theater. As a club, this group did not permit the partici-pation of African Americans or Jews. In response, in 1948 a group of Hadassah women who were interested in theater, met at the home of Florence Zacks (Melton) to organize a theater activity in which members of the Jewish community could comfortably take part.

The R. G. Barry Corporation offered loft space to this fledging drama group on the top floor of its factory at 80 1/2 East Long Street. It was within this space that Gallery Players produced its first production in May of 1950. This initial effort was met with great interest by the Jewish community.

The new Jewish Center was under construction at the time and the pro-gram department of the agency offered its multi-purpose room as a site for the group to stage future productions. The group readily accepted and became an adult activity offered by the Center. To present plays at the highest level, the group reached out to the general community for talented individuals.

Thus, Gallery Players became the first theater in Central Ohio to im-plement a casting policy that did not discriminate on the basis of race, religion or gender.

Today, Gallery Players continues this inclusive tradition bringing Central Ohio the very best that community theatre can offer by relying on the talents of a diverse cross section of the community. These talented people ensure Gallery Players stays strong for another 70+ seasons!

Gallery Players produces theater of the highest artistic expression, reflecting a Jewish perspective while exploring our common humanity. Building on its rich history, Gallery Players strives to challenge and inspire audiences and artists alike.
