LoRa Market Dynamics Executive Summary

Executive Summary

With a thriving global ecosystem and 10,000s of networks worldwide, LoRa®1 has captured a

significant slice of Internet of Things markets. LoRa’s chirp spread spectrum advantages, deep

building penetration, open source networking and suitability for private and public networks has

drawn thousands of new developers and the world’s largest network operators. The LoRa Alliance

has grown to over 500 members in just two years and new breakthroughs such as LoRa backscatter

using 1000X less power with ten cent sensing devices transmitting up to 1 kilometer may soon make

the promise of billions of IoT devices a reality.

Standards based LoRaWANTM2 networks are rolling out worldwide. Complete coverage of nearly all

EU countries is completed or underway and most major network operators including Bouygues,

Orange, KPN, Proximus and Swisscom are deploying LoRa gateways in thousands of towers, driving

new roaming standards, leveraging unlicensed spectrum and aggressively targeting enterprises. In

Asia, SK Telecom has one of the first commercial public LoRa networks and SoftBank (ARM) with

partner Actility is deploying LoRa services in Japan. Public LoRa networks will soon cover North

America as Comcast’s machineQ service is aggressively expanding to 20 major cities.

While much of the focus today is on public networks, private networks are an essential component

of the LoRa ecosystem. In 2022, there will be half a million LoRa networks installed worldwide and

private networks will make up two-thirds by this time.

LoRa Market Dynamics Executive Summary

There is fierce competition from other wide area IoT ecosystems that are using LTE- M1 (high data

rate), Sigfox (very low data rate) and in the next few years NB-IoT (medium data rate) devices.

While much of this competition focuses on the giant mobile/telecom industry, the cable industry

has emerged as another force when it selected LoRa as its low power wide area (LPWA) technology.

CableLabs (DOCSIS) has created an open source LoRa Server, LoRa App Server and LoRa Gateway

Bridge to integrate with their globally deployed gigabit Internet systems.

LoRa advantages include simple-to-install gateways, low-cost “things” modules, free ISM spectrum

and deep building penetrating radios. Low component costs and relatively simple circuitry make it

especially suited to dual-radio modules such as LoRa/Bluetooth/802.15.4 that creates new

opportunities for IoT such as precision asset locating as well as smart device setup and integration.

LoRa’s open source networking has created a fertile developer community where startups and

educational institutions are developing new IoT approaches. The University of Washington has

achieved a revolutionary power profile using off the shelf LoRa chips in a wide area network

backscatter technique that is 1000x lower power than current LoRa radio chipsets and possible of

being powered with a printed battery to power 10 cent devices that can transmit hundreds of

meters indoors and up to 1 kilometer outdoors.

ON World has been covering wireless sensor networks (WSN) for 15 years and the low power wide

area (LPWA) network ecosystem has many parallels to local area IoT technologies such as Zigbee,

Z-Wave, WiFi and Bluetooth. The forecasts in this report uses analysis and data modeling from our

research over the past decade. This report provides insight into that analysis as well as

perspectives from 200+ stakeholders about future and current LoRa market segment growth,

applications, pricing, threats and opportunities.
