Term 1 – Week 10

Dear Parents / Carers,

Thank you students, staff and parents for a fantastic Term 1.

Research clearly shows the importance of students and teachers working together. Meta-analyses of relevant research have identified clear, measurable benefits for children when their parents are actively engaged in their learning.

These studies demonstrate that the children are more likely to develop positive self-esteem, be motivated to learn, be positive about school and achieve good grades. Adolescents are less likely to have discipline issues, get involved in substance abuse or drop out of school. Young people are more likely to maintain high aspirations and plan to go on to further education and build a career.

Importantly, the power of parental engagement overrides other factors that have been shown to influence a child’s achievement. Various studies have shown that, when parents are actively engaged in their children’s learning, their influence appears to outweigh factors such as parental education, socioeconomic background or the quality of the child’s schooling.

Even though parents may not be actively involved with their child’s school, they may well be supportive of what teachers are doing, taking an active interest in what their children are learning in school and helping them relate this to the world beyond school. Research suggests that, in families where at least one parent or significant adult is engaged in this way, children are more likely to be motivated to learn, to see the school in a positive light and to enjoy productive relationships with their teachers. However, many parents do not realise this.

Parents need to know that they can make a big difference when they:

• hold high expectations for their children; • show interest in the things their children are

interested in; • value learning and model the behaviours of

successful learners; • give specific, rather than general, praise; and • establish routines that promote health,

wellbeing and regular study.

Granville South Cafe

If you haven’t already heard, our school is running an afternoon café on Wednesdays for parents / carers to attend. It is a time where you can sit back and relax with a free cup of tea / coffee and have a chat with other parents.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 & 5

In May 2018 the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student's right to privacy is maintained. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 15-17 May 2018.

Multicultural Perspectives Speaking Competition

Last Wednesday the 21st of March, our school’s first Multicultural Speaking Competition was held.

Students from Stages 2 and 3 chose from a variety of topics incorporating a multicultural element, such as “Belonging, Australia Day, Welcome to our Place!, Media Matters”and “My Story”. Students in Stage 2 had to prepeare a speech of approximately 3 minutes, Stage 3 students had to prepare a speech for approximately 4 minutes. As well as presenting their prepared speeches, students needed to present an impromtu speech. They were given a topic and had 5 minutes to prepare a speech, then preesent it to the audience. Finalists were selected from each class and had the opportunity to speak in front of their whole stage. Our finalists were amazing! All students who spoke at the competetion were prepared, organised and their speeches were engaging. It was a very close competition, with 2 students from each stage being selected to move to the next round, which will be held at one of our local primary schools. These students will compete against students from many local schools. We could not be prouder of all the students who participated in the competition. The speeches were absolutely fantastic. A HUGE congratulations to everyone who had a go.

Writers of the Week This week students in 6/5S were writing from an Australian soldier’s perspective. As I was about to dig for kids that survived the bombing I saw furry legs. I rushed to see what it was. On the ground there lay a little puppy that was unconscious. It was covered in dust, so I brushed it off and took him with me. I have dug for remains many times, but never found a puppy as cute as this one. On the way back to the camp, the Taliban attacked us by bombing one of the trucks but eventually we got back. The poor little guy was wounded, his legs were bleeding. Even though I was hungry I fed the puppy instead, weeks went past and the pup began to heal. The pup and I bonded really well; he would never

leave me alone. I treated him as if he were my son. By Alyssar Omrie

Twenty minutes later I received a phone call that shocked my internal system. It was news that a school had just been bombed. I hoped all of the kids were all okay. I immediately rushed to the school as quickly as I could before more kids could get hurt. I had hoped I wasn't too late. When I saw legs that belonged to an animal I immediately rushed so I could check it out. What I witnessed was horrific! By Aymen Chaouk PBL Update

Our students have made great progress as they use positive behaviour each day at school. Our focus for Weeks 10 and 11 is making positive choices when using the toilets.

At Granville South public school we are learning to be safe, respectful and a learner around the toilets.

What does it look like to be a safe, respectful and a learner around the toilets?

Students can: - Be in the right place at the right time. - Going to the toilet when the music starts playing -Washing hands after using the toilet

Keep earning those rising stars and getting your name in the barrel. Next week it could be you. Congratulations to all students. Your teachers and parents and all proud of you. The PBL prize box has so many prizes for you all. PBL Team

SRC Update

The SRC was so impressed with the amount of healthy food that was in lunchboxes on Tuesday 27th March. It was great to see so many students pack a healthy lunch. Eating healthy food throughout the day helps with learning and concentration. Try to pack a healthy lunchbox every day! Keep a look out for the next kick start to healthy food day.

School grounds open during the holidays

NSW schools can make their facilities available to the community under the Community Use of

School Facilities Policy. This doesn’t always happen due to increased maintenance, cleaning, security measures, insurance costs, and other risks. To address this, a second trial program is proposed over the coming holiday period. How will it work? Facilities would be open from 8am-6pm, 7 days a week, from 16 April 2018 to 27 April 2018

Bunting will be strung to separate the play areas

from school buildings

Signage will be placed at the entrances to notify the times of access, and non-permitted activities

Cleaners will arrive at 7am to open the gates and

install empty rubbish bins at the entrance

A Security Guard will be on site while the school

is open

The Security Guard will lock the gates at 6pm

Final cleaning will be undertaken to ready the

school for Day 1 Term 2. Any remediation works upon completion of the project will be covered by School Infrastructure NSW. What are the benefits? Communities would have access to additional play areas over the holiday period

Participating schools receive $5,000 for the

upgrade or installation of school equipment, or other maintenance priorities

Granville South Schools as Community Centres Project

Hi Granville South Public School Community, I am Julie May and I would like to introduce myself to you all. I facilitate the Granville South Schools as Community Centres Project (GS SaCC). I have been part of the Granville South PS

team for over 11 years now and have met many of you during that time. I hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting many more of you. I will be sharing photos and information about the GS SaCC and its activities in the newsletter. This edition I would like to showcase our Supported Playgroup Program. Playgroup is a wonderful way for children aged birth to starting school age to have fun and learn and for parents to meet new people and make friends. There are two Playgroups – one on Monday and one on Wednesday – 9.30am to 11.30am. During the Playgroup session the children experience activities that develop all areas of growth including fine motor skills with activities such as painting, drawing, stamping, puzzles and playdough; imaginative play with our home corner, puppets and dress ups; early literacy through our library, story time, singing and music and our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program; social skills through interaction with peers; gross motor activities during outdoor play and dancing. Each session children experience independent play and group activities including craft time. We have information sessions, incursions and excursions and celebrate special occasions. Recently to Celebrate Harmony Day, each Playgroup produced an art work. Both now proudly hang in our rooms.

If you would like to join Playgroup please call in to see me or phone 9892 2328. We welcome all to Playgroup.

Keep Smiling Julie
