Dear Parents
As you may be aware, last Saturday morning, the Minato family lost their home to fire. Thankfully all the family are safe and well and recovering from what was a very distressing experience. I know I speak for the family when I say they have been overwhelmed with the generosity of both the donations and your thoughts and prayers. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin the difficult and challenging task of rebuilding.
As I write my piece this week, I am at a Principal’s Conference in Townsville. It is always a good opportunity to meet with other principals from our Diocese and catch up with Catholic Education Office happenings.
Have a great week.
Timothy Ham.

The events of the past week have given many of us the opportunity to realise just how fortunate we all are to have family and friends who love and care for us. It is during difficult times that we often see the very best in those around us. Lent is an opportunity to build on our relationships with each other and to extend our love and care for others to those who need help the most. Our contribution to Project Compassion is an opportunity to extend a helping hand to people far and wide. The following is a link to this week’s story of how Caritas has made a life changing difference for this family. http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion/weekly-stories/week-2-deng Please continue to keep in your prayers all in our community who are going through difficult times or are sick, particularly our Bishop and all who have no one to pray for them. Monday, March 17 is St Patrick’s Day, and while this day is celebrated the world over, it holds a special place in our hearts – once again we will celebrate with Mass at 9.00am and we encourage all to show their St Patrick’s spirit by wearing green!!!
Wishing you a God filled week. Paula Martin
From the APRE
As I arise today, may the strength of God pilot me, the power of God uphold me, the wisdom of God guide me. May the eye of God look before me, the ear of God hear me, the word of God speak for me. May the hand of God protect me, the way of God lie before me, the shield of God defend me, the host of God save me. May Christ shield me today. Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit, Christ when I stand, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. Amen

money. They fold up and fasten with Velcro and the tuckshop can then place you child’s lunch (wrapped) in the bag. They are $10 each. We think they’re great! We have a sample in the office if you’d like to take a look!

P&F Annual General Meeting
Our P&F Association will hold its AGM on Wednesday, 19 March, 2014 at 7.00pm in the staffroom. All parents are invited to attend.
We are seeking nominations for Secretary and Treasurer.
If you would like more information about these roles, or are interested in taking on these positions, please contact the Principal prior to the AGM. We are always actively seeking new members in the lower grades to replace those who might leave in the next few years— while there is still time to “show you the ropes”. Please consider coming along to the meeting—it is not necessary to feel pressured to take on a position.
Sports News
Dear Parents/Carers,
This year, the Debutante Ball and Lourdes Fete are scheduled to occur on consecutive weekends being the 3rd & 10th of May respectively.
Lourdes has the responsibility of organising and running several aspects for the Deb Ball in conjunction with the Deb Ball Committee. These responsibilities will primarily include the organisation and running of the bar including ticketing and table service, as well as assisting with the hall set-up and pack-up (tables/chairs, etc.). This work will need to take place on Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd May leading up to and after the event on the night.
With the fete being held the following weekend, we are also scheduled to make canoli shells on Monday, 5th May & the canoli cream on Thursday, 8th May. This, combined with the Ball requirements, will be a huge couple of weeks. We will send further information out about when and how you may be able to assist at the Ball and Fete in due course, but for the time being, please pencil these dates in on your calendar to offer assistance in any way possible.
We all lead very busy lives and times like these are certainly challenging, but with many hands we can achieve and hopefully have some fun and form friendships along the way.
Please offer your assistance.
Kind regards, Paul Spina (P&F President)
P&F Help Needed … From the President
There will also be a Fete meeting held after the AGM so we would
appreciate all stall co-ordinators etc. attend this meeting.

Look who popped into our library today!! It was the Mary Mackillop Early Learning Centre’s Kindy group! Our Librarian, Mrs Mendiolea, read them a book using the document camera (which project the image onto the wall) and children learnt how to look after their books in preparation for borrowing in Term 2. Children enjoyed the visit and are looking forward to regular visits throughout the year.
Mary Mackillop Kindy Kids Visit Library
Hands-On Wildlife To fully engage with their science and history studies, Grades 3MP and 3CA were visited by Ranger Dan and Ranger Jackie last week. They brought with them interesting Australian native animals. To see these animals up close and personal was a first for many of the children. The children said ...’It was so fascinating!’ and ‘Blossom, the sugar-glider, was my favourite!’ Even Mr Ham was brave enough to take a turn at holding Rex, the crocodile. Check out the story and more pictures in today’s Herbert River Express.
School Hat Policy As you will be aware, Lourdes School has a “No Hat, No
Play” policy. This means that we are unable to lend hats
for lunch time play. Children will be required to sit under
the school if they do not have their hat.
Therefore it is VERY IMPORTANT to ensure that hats are
clearly marked, so that they can be returned to the child.

Reading Oasis Book Fair

Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 March. The book fair will be

Walk for the WestWalk for the West We are going to hold a Walk-A-Thon in
the last week of Term 1 to raise money
for drought-stricken farmers of the
Hughenden and Winton districts by
assisting with the supply of cattle and
sheep food. The “walk” will be held in
collaboration with our sister Catholic
school, St Francis School, Hughenden.
Let’s see if we, as a school, can
collectively “walk” the 495kms distance
from Ingham to Hughenden! Children
will walk a course within the school
grounds. Sponsor forms will be sent
home later this week.

This term we have been enjoying stories written
by Bob Graham….some of favourites have been
Queenie the Bantam, Max, The Trouble With Dogs
and Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten.
The Trouble with Dogs
After reading this story we made some very cute
dogs and thought of many reasons why dogs
were so great!
The trouble with dogs is that they are…. just
so cute….so playful….so excited….so good to
pat and play with….so cheeky...so curious and so
smart!
The trouble with dogs is that they love to chew
things up and lick and scratch you!
The trouble with dogs is they love to run and
jump about.
They trouble with dogs is they make a lot of
mess when they are having fun.
The story about Max the Superhero
inspired us to create our own
Superheroes!
Rose the Fast Flying Hero
By Cara Elliott
Rose likes to fly around looking for crime.
She flies around so much and she is very,
very, very fast. If the policeman catches
criminals and he cannot tell if the person is
telling the a lie, Rose can read criminals’
minds and saves the day. She has a very
shiny crown with red and blue diamonds on
it. She has very long hair. She has a shiny
blue cape and a rainbow dress with spots on
it. She has shiny blue shoes.

This term for Science, students in Year 2 have been engaged in a force unit called PUSH and PULL. Through inquiry based learning activities, students have completed hand on activities to determine how objects can be moved and how the influences of other forces such as gravity and forces from water and air influence the movement of objects. Here are some photos from our science experiments.
M A T H S
Through the use of the
Smartboard and internet,
students have enjoyed
playing games to help them
learn counting patterns.
Students have also been
using a variety of resources and hands on activities to
understand place value with 3
digit numerals.
E N G L I S H
Learning spelling has never
been so much fun when
students can use various apps
on the iPad, play dough, play cut
the flower, magnetic letters,
whiteboard marker writing, letter
art stencils and stamps to learn
their spelling and reinforce their
strategies from spelling journal
sessions.
Students have enjoyed being
“editing detectives” by using their
glasses and clues to help them
edit their writing activities.

Do you have any old
books you don’t need?
Dr Charly Muke, a teacher at
Abergowrie College, is collecting books
to send to the Jiwake Province in Papua
New Guinea to enable 10 rural schools
in the province to set up their first ever
school library. These schools have no
reading books and students do not have
any access to books at home.
Please drop any books you no longer
need into the Lourdes School office—we
will be collecting for the whole year, in
the hope that we can fill a shipping
container by Christmas! Please help!
