SORT LOVE VS. INFATUATION

Characteristics of Infatuation Is common during teen years

* Occurs Quickly—love at first sight

* Does not last long

* Occurs shortly after breaking up with someone—known as “on the rebound”

* May be based on physical enjoyment–a couple who finds themselves bored without physical stimulation

* Is centered on a few admired traits in the other person

* Is often based on physical traits or feelings

* Does not see or acknowledge the other person's weaknesses

* The relationship stays the same for a long time—does not go anywhere

* Selfish and possessive of the other person—jealous

* Disagreements are common -- fighting

* Daydream—cannot concentrate on necessary tasks

* May lose your appetite

* Is easily influenced by the person they are infatuated with

* Creates a selfish relationship—"How can he/she help me get what I want?"

Types of Love

• There are many kinds of love that we need to receive daily

• Although there are many kinds of love, most people will only experience one or two types of love

• Love is vital to the well-being of a person

Romantic Love• Also known as “puppy love”

• It is an exaggerated form of love

• The first stage of love

• Everything is perfect—No faults

• Many people experience this at

very young ages.

Sexual Love

• The intimate expression of love

• Many teenagers become sexually active and

gain a false sense of love

• This type of love is best saved for a committed

married couple.

Pragmatic Love• A rational reasoning kind of love

• Arranged marriages fall in this category– many

couples learn to love on another

Platonic Love• Love based on friendship & respect and not

physical attraction.

• Example: Religious leader and his/her follower.

Altruistic Love (Unconditional Love)

• This type of love is an unconditional kind of love

that excuses certain conditions and physical

appearances.

Manic Love

• A crazy, possessive, jealous kind of love

• Can often times be abusiveBehind jealously is a central emotion—FEAR

fear about change, fear about the future relationship, fear of abandonment, fear of losing power in a relationship.

4 stages of Jealously1. Suspecting the threat- some people look for signs when there aren’t any, others

overlook signs. 2. Emotionally reacting- can range from clinging, depression, violent rage to suicide. Men

usually respond more intensely while women take longer to get over it.3. Coping- some people cry, plead, blame themselves, over eat, become competitive,

delay entering another relationship4. Moving on- if these feelings erupt it is important to discuss them openly and then find

a creative way to deal with these feelings. Ex: private code word. VALIDATE AND RESPECT THE PARTNERS FEELINGS!

Self-Love• A egotistic, self-loving kind of love

Before you can love anyone else, you must first love yourself.

What does that mean?

Do you feel empty and want someone to fix your self-esteem and make you feel pretty and smart? Dr. Robin says if you are looking for a rescuer, look no further than yourself. "It is so tempting to look for someone else to fix you, to fill your heart, to fill your soul and your mind," she says. "It is not someone else's job to fix that which is broken in you—it is your job.”
