Section1 SAFETY

Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

DANGER

1.1 SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL

1.2 SPARK ARRESTOR INFORMATION

Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING

Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION

The Owner/Operator's manual uses this symbol to alert you of potential hazards. Whenever you see this symbol, read and obey the safety message that follows it. Failure to obey the safety message could result in personal injury, death or property damage.

Under California Law and the laws of several other states, you are not permitted to operate an internal combustion engine using hydrocarbon fuels on any forest covered, brush covered or grass covered land or on land covered

with grain, hay or other flammable agricultural crops, without an engine spark arrester in continuous effective working order. The engine on your power equipment, like most outdoor power equipment, is an internal combustion engine that burns gasoline or diesel fuel (hydrocarbons). Therefore, your power equipment must be equipped with a spark arrester muffler in continuous effective working order. The spark arrester must be attached to the engine exhaust

system in such a manner that flames or heat from the system will not ignite flammable material.Failure of the owner/operator of the equipment to comply with this regulation is a misdemeanor under California law and may also be a violation of other state and/or federal regulations, laws, ordinances, or codes. Contact your local fire marshal or forest service for specific information about which regulations apply in your area.

1.3 BEFORE OPERATING

1. ALWAYS read and understand this owner's manual. Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this equipment. Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read, understand, and follow the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the machine.

2. ALWAYS familiarize yourself with all of the safety and operating decals on this equipment and on any of its attachments or accessories.

3. ALWAYS keep safety decals clean and legible. Replace missing or illegible safety decals.

4. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENTALWAYS obtain and wear safety glasses, steel-toed shoes and tight fitting gloves, and also use hearing protection at all times when operating this machine. Head protection is optional.

The standard muffler installed on the engine is not equipped with a spark arrester. One must be added before using this machine in an area where a spark arrester is required by law. Contact the local authorities if these laws apply to you. See your authorized engine dealer for spark arrester options.

A fire extinguisher and first aid kit should be kept readily accessible while performing maintenance or when operating this equipment.

*Avoid wearing loose fitted clothing. Never operate this machine while wearing clothing with drawstrings that could wrap around or get caught in the machine.

SAFETY

1.4 OPERATION SAFETY

5. ALWAYS use an approved fuel container. Do not remove gas cap or add fuel when engine is running. Add fuel to a cool engine only.

6. ALWAYS keep all guards, deflectors, and shields in good working condition.

7. ALWAYS shut off the machine and make sure all moving parts have come to a complete stop before inspecting or servicing any part of this machine. Disconnect the spark plug.

8. ALWAYS check that all screws, nuts, bolts, and other fasteners are secured, tightened and in proper working condition before starting the machine.

9. ALWAYS use only in daylight or good artificial light.10. NEVER operate this machine if you are under the

influence of alcohol, medications, or substances that can affect your vision, balance or judgement. Do not operate if tired or ill. You must be in good health to operate this machine safely.

11. NEVER operate this equipment in the vicinity of bystanders. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons, particularly small children. It is recommended that bystanders keep at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from the area of operation.

12. NEVER allow children to operate this equipment. Allow only adults to operate the log splitter. No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to operate the log splitter.

13. NEVER run this equipment in an enclosed area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide gas, a deadly poison that is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Do not operate this equipment in or near buildings, windows or air conditioners.

14. NEVER fill fuel tank indoors. Keep open flames, sparks, smoking materials and other sources of combustion away from fuel.

15. NEVER operate machine without shields in place. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death.

16. NEVER transport or move machine while it is operating or running.

1. ALWAYS use this machine for splitting wood only, do not use it for any other purpose.

2. ALWAYS allow only one (1) person to operate the log splitter. If a helper is assisting in loading logs, never activate the control until the helper is a minimum of 10 feet away from the machine.

3. ALWAYS operate the log splitter from the operator zones specified in Section 4.4.

4. ALWAYS keep hands and feet out of splitting area while machine is operating to avoid serious personal injury. Stop and allow machine to come to a complete stop before clearing obstructions.

5. ALWAYS set up your work site so you are not endangering traffic and the public. Take great care to provide adequate warnings.

6. ALWAYS block machine wheels to prevent unintended movement and lock in either horizontal or vertical position.

7. ALWAYS ensure the control lever is in the neutral position before starting the machine.

8. ALWAYS keep the machine clear of debris and other accumulations. Immediately remove split wood from around the machine so you do not stumble over it.

9. ALWAYS be cautious. During operation, log splitters develop high fluid pressures. Fluid escaping through a pin hole opening can burn or penetrate your skin and cause blood poisoning, gangrene, or death. Keep in mind the following instructions at all times:a. DO NOT check for leaks with your hand.b. DO NOT operate machine with frayed, kinked,

cracked, or damaged hoses, fittings, or tubing. c. STOP the engine and relieve hydraulic system

pressure before changing or adjusting fittings, hoses, tubing, or other system components.

d. DO NOT adjust the pressure settings of the pump or valve.

10. ALWAYS be aware. Leaks can be detected by passing cardboard or wood, while wearing protective gloves and safety glasses, over the suspected area. Look for discoloration of the cardboard or wood.

11. ALWAYS see a doctor immediately if injured by escaping fluid. Serious infection or reaction can develop if proper medical treatment is not administered immediately.

12. ALWAYS check the logs before splitting. Ensure there are no foreign materials, such as nails, present in the wood.

13. ALWAYS make sure that both ends of the log you are splitting are cut as square as possible. This will prevent the log from sliding out of position while under pressure. Logs should be 24 inches or shorter in length.

14. ALWAYS hold the log by the sides when you are positioning it into the log splitter. Do not hold the log by the ends.

15. ALWAYS keep your fingers away from any cracks that open in the log during the splitting operation.

CAUTION

As with any other piece of outdoor equipment, getting the feel for how your machine operates and getting to know the best techniques for particular jobs are important to overall good performance.

Move the machine to a clear, level area outdoors before starting. Do not operate in the vicinity of bystanders.1. Check engine oil and hydraulic oil levels before

starting.2. Turn the fuel cut-off switch to the ON position, if

applicable.3. Turn the engine switch to the ON position, if applicable.4. Place the throttle control midway between the SLOW

and FAST positions. If starting a cold engine, move the choke control into the CHOKE position.

5. Pull the recoil starter until light resistance is felt. Then, pull briskly. Repeat until the engine starts. Make sure the starting cord retracts after each pull.

6. As the engine warms, gradually turn the choke off.7. Move the throttle to the FAST position.

1. Move throttle lever to the SLOW position.2. Turn the engine stop switch (if equipped) to "OFF"

("O" position) to stop the engine.OR

3. Move the throttle past the SLOW position to shut off engine.

4. Close the fuel valve.

FOR THE SPECIFIC STARTING, OPERATING AND SERVICE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO YOUR EXACT ENGINE MODEL, ALWAYS CONSULT THE ENGINE OWNER'S MANUAL FIRST.

NOTE

Gasoline and diesel fuels are highly flammable and their vapors are explosive. To prevent personal injury or property damage:Store fuel only in approved containers, in well ventilated, unoccupied buildings, away from sparks or flames. A container with a capacity of 2 gallons or less with a pouring spout is recommended. Do

not fill the fuel tank while the engine is hot or running, since spilled fuel could ignite if it comes in contact with hot parts or sparks from ignition. Do not start the engine near spilled fuel. Never use fuel as a cleaning agent.DO NOT MIX OIL WITH FUEL.

WARNING

Use only those types of fuels that are recommended in your Engine Owner's Manual. To add fuel:1. Stop engine, wait for all parts to stop moving and

disconnect spark plug wire. Allow the engine and muffler to cool for at least three minutes.

2. Clean area around fuel fill cap and remove cap.3. Using a clean funnel, fill fuel tank to 1/2" below bottom

LISHOPERATION

Even when a log is placed in the correct position, make sure that the edges do not catch on the stripper plates (See images). This may cause damage to your machine or cause the log to become stuck. Make sure your log is placed free from the stripper plates (See below).

IMPORTANT

Depending upon the type of wood being split, a log may not always break into two pieces and fall to the ground. If a log sticks to the wedge and starts to return with the wedge during reverse, stop the cylinder retraction and remove the wood. Care should be taken to prevent the wood piece from falling on parts of your body.

SERVICE & MAINTENANCE

WARNINGBEFORE INSPECTING OR SERVICING ANY PART OF THIS MACHINE, SHUT OFF POWER SOURCE,

AND MAKE SURE ALL MOVING PARTS HAVE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP.

5.2 STORAGE MODEThe log splitter can be adjusted for storing in tight spaces. Perform the following steps to transform the machine into storage mode:1. Turn the engine off.2. Flip the main beam into vertical position (see

Section 4.5).3. Remove the hitch pin from the hitch channel and hitch

tube. Flip the hitch tube into vertical position.4. Secure the hitch tube in the upright position by

installing the hitch pin in the hole below the 3/8" hitch bolt and through hitch tube.

5.3 FILLING HYDRAULIC SYSTEMThe hydraulic system on this log splitter comes filled with high performance Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to accommodate operation in temperatures below 32 degrees F (0 degrees C). When adding or replacing ATF, use a Dexron® III or Mercon® qualified product. Check the fluid on level ground with the jack stand in the down position. DO NOT MIX HYDRAULIC FLUID WITH ATF. THIS MAY DAMAGE THE SYSTEM AND COULD VOID WARRANTY.DO NOT OVERFILL OR FILL PAST THE FULL MARK ON THE CAP, DOING SO WILL CAUSE ATF TO SQUIRT OUT OF CAP HOLE.FILL THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FLUID TANK WITH THE RAM RETRACTED.

5.4 CHANGING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FILTER

Change the hydraulic system filter after the first 50 hours of operation and every 200 hours thereafter. To change the hydraulic system filter:1. Using an oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise.2. Once the filter becomes loose, turn it out the rest of

the way with your hand.3. Properly discard old filter.4. Lube the rubber seal on the new filter (PN 16922) with

clean hydraulic oil.5. Install the filter onto the threaded pipe. Turn with your

hand until the filter is finger tight.6. Using an oil filter wrench, tighten the filter another ½

turn.7. Check fluid level and fill if necessary.

LISHSERVICE & MAINTENANCE

WARNINGBEFORE INSPECTING OR SERVICING ANY PART OF THIS MACHINE, SHUT OFF POWER SOURCE,

AND MAKE SURE ALL MOVING PARTS HAVE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP.

5.6 LUBRICATION

Lubricate the machine periodically with a lithium-based grease. Extreme working conditions will require more frequent greasing. Check the wheel bearings after the first 20-25 hours of use and repack with grease once a year.

Do not over grease bearings. Overfilling can lead to excessive heat and/or unseating of the seals. Add grease slowly and under light pressure. Whenever possible, rotate bearing slowly while lubricating.

NOTE

Polyurea and lithium-based greases are not compatible. Mixing the two grease types may lead to premature failure.

IMPORTANT

5.7 WEDGE AND SPACER PLATE MAINTENANCE

Before each use, check the alignment of the splitting wedge spacer plates. Misaligned spacers may cause the wedge to travel incorrectly along the I-beam damaging the wedge bolt, wedge, and/or beam. The spacer plates have slotted adjustment holes to allow for tolerance in the width of the beam. With heavy use, these plates can wear and move, especially when the wood being split requires the maximum force of the splitter. If the wedge bolt is ever bent or damaged, replacement bolts are required to be Grade 8, 1/2 x 4" carriage bolt.

To adjust the spacer plates:1. The three bolts holding the spacer plates need NOT

be removed, but simply loosen the nuts to allow the spacer plate to be adjusted.

2. Push the spacer plates against the beam lightly. (DO NOT CLAMP!)

3. Tighten the spacer plate bolts to 110 ft-lbs. It is necessary to properly torque these bolts, due to the pressures the splitting action can generate.

4. The spacer plates must run parallel to the edge of the wedge. The spacer plates need not be flush with the side of the wedge, but should be parallel.

5. After tightening the spacer plate bolts, extend and retract the wedge with no load.

6. A properly adjusted wedge will operate smoothly, with no signs of binding.

7. When replacing the wedge bolt, make sure the cylinder ram is tight against the wedge before tightening to 110 ft-lbs.

8. The wedge bolt is a 1/2 x 4", black oxide, Grade 8 carriage bolt. Replacement with anything less than a Grade 8 bolt will result in future wedge bolt failures.
