Injury Trends

• Hand/Finger injuries– Think about gloves when planning your work– No razorblades!

• Ergonomic Contributors– Maximize time in neutral position– Minimize force, angle, and frequency – Minimize time in unnatural

positions– No abrupt movements

Safety Observations• There have been over 600 safety

observations made of LSD work – 91% of them have been recorded as “All Safe”

• Recurrent themes:– Lack of PPE (all sorts)– Improper use of ladders – Housekeeping– Golf carts– Electrical issues with hand-held

power tools

Safety Observations• Observed tech on platform ladder in the Tunnel.

He was wearing steel toe shoes and was aware of his surroundings and pinch points, etc. As an aside he offered that he has a better understanding of how the machine is put together rather than just operating it. He said he enjoys the hands on aspect of the work he is doing now.

• Observed people doing cable removal from Hall B apparatus. Workers are on an elevated platform requiring fall protection and other PPE. Noted all workers wearing fall harness and secured to structure. Also eye protection, hard hats, gloves, safety shoes and knee pads were noted. Complimented workers on working safely.

Safety Observations - Material Handling

• Folks were moving pallet sized wire crates full of cable stacked 3 high with a small pallet jack. The stack was ~8 feet high and swinging back & forth

• Observed material handling operation. Process was well co-ordinated and proper MH equipment available. However, noted deficiency in use of PPE and equipment safety features. – Gloves and glasses not worn by all even though required in ATLis– Noted good practice that one person used 2x4 to push material, thus

keeping hands away from pinch point. However, other personnel used bare hands.

– Workers did not use safety lock on manual lifting devices to prevent load from falling in the event of failure of the mechanical ratchet.

– One worker started to put arms/hands under load. Stopped worker at that point and had them engage the safety locks.

– There are no training requirements for using these lifting devices.

Page 14: LSD status and plans

• Remember to focus on your safety and that of your co-workers– Take the time to look

at your work area before you start work

– Use the best tools for the job and use them correctly

– Consider impact on other work groups

– If the job conditions change – STOP the work and re-plan

– No short cuts!

So What?
