LSO Season 2014/15Spring Concert Guide
For 40 years, my relationship with the LSO has been a joy and an inspiration.
Michael Tilson Thomas, LSO Principal Guest Conductor
The LSO is the capital’s oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world’s finest, with over a century of history behind it and a hundred talented musicians forming its Membership.
Each year the LSO joins forces with the world’s leading
conductors and soloists to perform 70 concerts at the Barbican Centre,
our home in the City of London, plus another 70 across the globe.
In recent years, tours have taken the Orchestra to all the major
European cities and further-flung destinations including Australia,
Singapore, India, China and Japan. A tour to the West Coast of the US
with Principal Guest Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, in celebration
of his 70th birthday, promises to be a highlight of 2015.
The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall too.
LSO Discovery, our education and community programme, reaches
over 65,000 people from all walks of life every year. There are countless
opportunities to get involved in eye-opening musical activities at
LSO St Luke’s, our venue on Old Street, from attending concerts
as a family to participating in community music-making groups.
And you can hear the Orchestra on over a hundred (and counting!)
releases on our own label, LSO Live, and on iconic soundtracks for
numerous films (including recent hit The Imitation Game, four of the
Harry Potter films and all six previous Star Wars movies).
‘We travel the world to celebrate this incredible Orchestra. Londoners can hear it any time they like.’

2 WELCOME / ICONS OF MUSIC ~ LSO.CO.UK
Get to know some of history’s iconic composers through a selection of great works – ground-breaking symphonies that are as powerful today as when they were first heard.
Brahms was both a traditionalist and an innovator, moulding Classical
traditions into bold Romantic gestures. His joyous Second Symphony is a
lasting, firm favourite.
Tchaikovsky’s symphonies are full of drama, overflowing with passionate
melodies and permeated with intensely personal meanings. Explore two
of the most gripping this spring: the Fourth and Sixth, both of which were
inspired by the inescapable, ever-present power of fate.
In February, we hear the sixth of Mahler’s ten epic symphonies.
A work of striking power, it’s brought to life by a huge, dazzling orchestra,
and punctuated by the three famous ‘hammer blows of fate’ that ring out in
the finale. And finally in April we encounter Russian composer Shostakovich
through his intriguing Sixth Symphony, which revels in ambiguity and
contradiction, from the sombre opening movement to the high-spirited finale.

We all have a voice, and we all have the potential to experience the unparalleled joy of music-making.
Whether it’s a single voice or a massed choir of one hundred, vocal
music has the ability to communicate directly to us and tap into the whole
range of human emotion.
The earliest music would have undoubtedly been for voice. Since its
primitive beginnings the voice has remained a central thread of all musical
cultures and traditions.
This spring there is a series of concerts exploring the vast range of sung
music, from Berlioz’s exquisite Les nuits d’été, to the dazzling vocal acrobatics
of Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre. LSO Sing, the Orchestra’s singing
programme, also offers an abundance of opportunities to experience first-
hand the pleasure of singing regardless of experience or ability. In the next
singing day you can explore Duruflé’s deeply devotional Requiem in an open
workshop, when Simon Halsey, the LSO’s Choral Director, offers fresh insights.
‘A generosity and wisdom beyond his years.’

Jazz & folk inspirations
At first glance the worlds of folk, jazz and classical music couldn’t be further apart.
Folk is the music of the people and the land. Passed on by rote from
generation to generation, it is organic and adaptable. Jazz emerged as a
natural progression from folk roots, retaining a sense of spontaneity
and intuition whilst developing a unique and distinctive harmonic and
rhythmic character. Classical music, on the other hand, is highly formalised.
Taught by learned professors in the world’s most prestigious conservatoires,
it is written down and performed note by note.
Despite their obvious differences, when the worlds of classical, jazz
and folk music collide the effect can be astounding. Lush orchestral textures
and classical poise bring a new dimension to traditional folk themes and jazz
rhythms. Conversely, the improvisational quality of folk and jazz can lend an
emotional immediacy and sense of spontaneity to classical music. These
three concerts explore the breadth of folk influence on classical music, and
the ways many great composers have looked to their roots for inspiration.
‘Järvi never let the intensity drop.’
