LSO Season 2014/15Summer Concert Guide

Music is surely one of life’s greatest pleasures. Where better to share this experience than in the open air with the LSO? I can’t wait!

The LSO is the capital’s oldest symphony orchestra and one of the world’s fi nest, with over a century of history behind it and a hundred talented musicians forming its Membership.

Each year the LSO joins forces with the world’s leading conductors

and soloists to perform 70 concerts at the Barbican Centre, our home in

the City of London, plus another 70 all over the world. Recent tours have

taken the Orchestra to all the major European cities and further-flung

destinations including Australia, Singapore, India, China, Japan and the US.

Back on home turf, the annual BMW LSO Open Air Classics Concert in

Trafalgar Square on 17 May promises to be a highlight of the Orchestra’s

summer, featuring conductor Valery Gergiev and star violinist Nicola

Benedetti performing with the LSO to an audience of thousands.

The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall, too. LSO Discovery,

our education and community programme, which celebrates its 25th

anniversary this summer, reaches over 65,000 people from all walks

of life every year. There are countless opportunities to get involved in

eye-opening musical activities at LSO St Luke’s, our venue on Old Street,

from attending concerts as a family to participating in community

music-making groups.

You can also hear the Orchestra on over a hundred (and counting!)

releases on our own label, LSO Live, and on iconic soundtracks for

numerous films (including recent hit The Imitation Game, four of the

Harry Potter films and six Star Wars movies).

‘We travel the world to celebrate this incredible Orchestra. Londoners can hear it any time they like.’Valery Gergiev, LSO Principal ConductorLondon’s

LSO Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev’s Revolutionary Russians series comes to its thrilling conclusion this summer.

On 17 May, the LSO will take to the stage in Trafalgar Square under

the baton of Valery Gergiev for the fourth annual BMW LSO Open Air Classics

concert – a unique opportunity to experience the breathtaking sound of a

world-class symphony orchestra in one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

This year’s concert concludes Gergiev’s season-long series exploring

some of the greatest figures in the history of Russian music, this time focusing

on three of Shostakovich’s best-loved scores including the show-stopping

First Violin Concerto, played by superstar violinist Nicola Benedetti.

The series also continues at the Barbican on 12 May with a programme

exploring the dazzling variety of Russian music, from Tchaikovsky’s

soaring, lyrical Violin Concerto to Shostakovich’s enigmatic final symphony,

a summation of his life’s work.

Between April and June, the LSO brings together a line-up of superstar soloists for a celebration of all things violin.

At the heart of the Festival are twelve concerts on the Barbican stage,

showcasing some of the world’s most brilliant soloists – including Gil Shaham,

Nicola Benedetti, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Joshua Bell, Leonidas Kavakos, Janine

Jansen and more – and the cornerstones of the violin concerto repertoire.

These show-stopping concerts are combined with a programme of

extra events. At LSO St Luke’s, four leading violinists deliver a series of

BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts; you can get closer to the music through

LSO Discovery events, including four free lunchtime recitals; and The Strad,

media partners of the Festival, host three free The Strad Sundays, with makers

exhibitions during the day where you can fi nd out more about the art of

violin-making, followed by panel discussions with expert speakers.

In 2015 LSO Discovery, the Orchestra’s world-leading music education and community programme, celebrates a quarter of a century.

It all began in the late 1980s, when LSO cellist Frances Saunders

began to explore how the Orchestra could incorporate education work

into its schedule. In 1990 the LSO appointed its fi rst Head of Education

and three years later the increasingly innovative programme was

re-named LSO Discovery.

Education and outreach is now an inextricable part of the LSO’s DNA.

By including LSO Discovery participants in the highest profi le events,

such as international tours, the 2012 Olympic Games and concerts with

Sir Simon Rattle, the LSO demonstrates its belief in the immutable place

of music education as the foundation of all great music-making.

Join us this summer for a series of events celebrating LSO Discovery

in all its colour and variety, from emerging composer workshops and

a community singing day to Barbican concerts with the full Orchestra.

For full listings of anniversary activities, visit lso.co.uk/lsodiscovery

LSO Discovery activities would not be possible without the generous

support of Trusts and Foundations, Patrons and Corporate Partners.
