Grade 4 – Unit 3, Week 1

Lucky

1 As a zookeeper at the county zoo, I rarely have a dull

moment. My favorite job is taking care of the baby animals

in our nursery. Let me tell you about one day when a small

visitor worried everyone at the zoo.

2 It all started when Mandy, one of the other zookeepers,

brought a baby owl to work. “Look at this poor little thing,”

she said with tears in her eyes. “He must have fallen from

a nest.”

3 He was like a fluffy snowball with dark eyes and beak.

Stretching his tiny fuzz-covered wings, he let out a cry. “Let’s

see what we can do for this little guy,” I said as I carefully

took the owl chick from Mandy.

4 I immediately had our veterinarian examine the owl chick.

She told us that he wasn’t doing too well because he had not

had food or water in a long time. Eventually, the chick did

drink water. But no matter how hard we tried, he would not

take food from our human hands.

Read the story “Lucky” and then answer Numbers 1 through 3.

5 “If he doesn’t eat soon, he’ll die,” Mandy said. She was

very concerned.

6 “I know, Mandy,” I replied. “Lucky has to eat.”

7 “Lucky?”

8 “Yes,” I said. “I named him because he was lucky you

found him. But right now, we really need him to start

eating soon.”

9 “If only we had a female owl here! Maybe she would feed

him,” said Mandy.

10 “That’s it!” I exclaimed, seeing a light at the end of

the tunnel.

11 “What’s it?” asked Mandy.

12 “We don’t have a female owl, but we can make one. Let’s

make a glove puppet with the face of an owl. Maybe Lucky

will think it’s his mother and take the food.”

13 “It’s worth a try,” Mandy said eagerly.

14 When the owl puppet was made, we were both excited to

try it out. Mandy put on the glove puppet and brought the

food close to Lucky’s mouth. The baby owl ate the food. That

day was one of my happiest days ever!

Something Nice for Rita

Saturday, November 8 at 9 A.M.

1 What a day! I got out of bed as usual and went in to wake up

my big sister Rita like I always do. When I walked over to her

bed, I saw that she didn’t look right. She looked pale and sweaty.

2 I asked Rita if she was okay. She responded that she felt

extremely sick. I felt really bad for her. Nobody likes to be

sick. Even though she’s sometimes a pain in the neck, I didn’t

want her to be sick. And I knew she was looking forward to

today. She planned on going to the first performance of her

favorite singer at the county fair. She looked so sad at the

thought of not going. Then she rolled over and went to sleep.

Saturday, November 8 at 11 A.M.

3 I went in to see Rita. She still looked very sick. I had

this great idea to cheer her up. I asked my dad to help me

make some food for Rita. I poured her some orange juice

and peeled an orange for her. Dad made some green tea with

honey and lemon in it. I made some toast, too. Then I took

her everything on a tray.

4 When I walked into Rita’s bedroom with the tray, she was

surprised and happy. “Thanks for being so nice to me, Jesse,”

she said. And then she started crying.

5 I started crying, too. “Oh, stop crying, sis! That’s what

Read the passage “Save Our Sports and Clubs” and then answer Numbers 1 through 3.

Save Our Sports and Clubs

Dear Friends of Franco Middle School,

1 Last week, our School Board talked about cutting

after-school sports and clubs. The Board said there was not

enough money for these sports and clubs. Don’t be misin-

formed! We can’t let this happen. Here are the reasons.

2 First of all, our sports and clubs are popular. Many

students take part in these sports and clubs. Basketball player

Jerome Jones says, “I really look forward to practice at the

end of the day. I like these sports teams.”

3 Many people think that these sports and clubs are not very

important. I disagree. Sports and clubs teach us important

values. They teach us discipline. They teach us pride. Everyone

who works on the school newspaper knows this. And of course,

we’re learning about good writing too. We have a lot of fun

putting together all the articles and photographs.

CA Progress MonitoringWeekly Assessment • Grade 4

Grade 4 – Unit 3, Week 2

4 Recently, one of the board members said that there isn’t

enough money to support these sports and clubs. Surely we

can find ways to get the money. For example, students can

help our cleaning crew. We can ask each student to work

one afternoon a month cleaning classrooms and hallways.

A student, Consuela Rodriguez, said, “I would gladly work

around the school if it would save our clubs. I’m great with a

paintbrush.” The School Board says we need $50,000 to keep

our sports and clubs going.

5 Please don’t let the Board take away our sports and clubs.

There have to be other ways to solve our money problem.

The next School Board meeting is Thursday at 7 P.M. in the

school cafeteria. Please attend it. Encourage your friends to

go as well. Voice your opinions! Let the Board know we want

to—we HAVE to—save our sports and clubs.

Yours sincerely,

Joan Chong

Dance Lessons, Please!

Dear Mom and Dad,

1 I am writing this letter to try to convince you to let me take

dancing lessons. I think this will be great for me. I have a few

reasons that I should be allowed to do this.

2 Haven’t I always been a good daughter? Haven’t I always

done what you’ve asked me to do? I haven’t misbehaved, have

I—or at least not too much?

3 My school grades are good—well, actually, they’re great.

You already knew that, though. I always do my homework

before I do all my household chores. (Hint! Hint! I do quite

a few household chores, don’t I?) I’m always prepared for

class. I study really hard for all my tests.

4 Now for the real reasons! You know I’m always jumping

around the house when I hear music on the radio. I’ve had this

dream of someday becoming a professional dancer. I want to

sing and dance until the cows come home! (I thought I’d toss

in a little humor.)

5 Now for the good part. Jenna Slawinski, the Director of the

Pacific Dance School, came to speak at a school assembly.

She told us that the first fifty students who sign up for dance

classes get a major discount. It won’t cost much at all. And

I’ve saved up money for an occasion like this.

6 Mom and Dad, please let me attend the Pacific Dance

School. You won’t be disappointed.

appreciative daughter,

Carmen

Selena Tells the Truth

1 Mario and Selena were excited about seeing their aunt

at her place of business. She ran her own office downtown.

They were greeted by their Aunt Ramona as they left the

elevator. She had promised to give them a tour if they ever

got downtown. Looking through the windows at the end of

the hall, they could see the summer sun shining on the tops of

other buildings far below.

2 “Here’s our office,” said Aunt Ramona. Then she opened

the door to a huge room filled with several computers.

3 Mario stood quietly in the busy room. He could tell that

his younger sister was really excited. Lights flashed on and

off. At desks, men and women tapped on keyboards. As they

worked, they kept their eyes on computer screens. These

screens displayed information that they needed.

4 “Over there,” laughed Aunt Ramona, “is a special

computer and printer. At least it’s special to us. It makes our

paychecks. Without it, nobody gets paid around here.”

5 “May we look at it?” asked Selena. She was already

running toward the machine. Mario started to walk over to

the machine, too. Selena flew past him, causing him to lose

his balance. He fell on one of the computers, hitting eleven

keys at once. The machine suddenly stopped. People in the

room stopped working. It seemed to Mario that everyone was

staring at him. His face turned red. He said nothing. He did

not want his aunt to think he had misbehaved.

6 Aunt Ramona said, “Mario, you must be more careful.” Mario

did not know what to say. It was really Selena’s fault he had

fallen into the machine, but he did not want to get her in trouble.

7 Aunt Ramona stood over the computer and touched several

buttons. The computer made a few sounds and the screen

blinked. Soon, the computer was running again. Everyone

went back to work. Selena, who had been looking at the big

machine at the other side of the room, returned to where her

aunt and brother were waiting. Aunt Ramona led Mario and

Selena to the door.

8 As Aunt Ramona opened the door so they could leave,

Selena stopped and turned to her. “Aunt Ramona, it was my

fault,” she said. “I pushed Mario. I didn’t do it on purpose,

though. It was an accident.”

9 Aunt Ramona nodded. “Thank you for telling me,” she said.

10 Mario smiled. He was proud of his little sister. She told the

truth and admitted it was her fault.

The Best Surprise

1 For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted a

little sister. I am an only child, and for the most part I like

being the center of attention. It does, however, get lonely

being the only child in a household. I often wondered why I

didn’t have a baby brother or sister, but that is a question I’ve

never asked Mom and Dad.

2 Recently, we were all watching a television program

about orphans in China. Hearing the words of the interpreters

brought tears to my eyes. It was so sad seeing all the children

without families. I think Mom and Dad felt the same way. I

could tell by the way they looked at each other.

4 I was surprised. “You know I would. I’d really like a sister,

but I guess I’d take a brother just the same,” I said with a

smile on my face.

5 Then one day, I got the news! Mom and Dad were so

inspired by the program that they decided to look into

adopting one of the Chinese orphans. They learned about an

international organization that would help them with every-

thing that was involved in an adoption.

6 I was so thrilled that I actually shouted for joy. Mom and

Dad didn’t shout aloud, but I could tell that they were just as

happy as I was.

7 For several months, Mom and Dad filled out paperwork,

made loads of phone calls, and went for interviews. Then

the phone call came! My parents called me over to the living

room. “There’s a baby waiting for us in China,” they said.

“Guess what, Pat? It’s a little girl! You’re going to have a

baby sister!”

8 “Yay!” I said. I was so happy!

9 Dad said he and Mom had to go to China to get the little

girl. They had prepared for this visit. I was going to stay with

my aunt and uncle until they returned. Mom and Dad would

be gone for a few weeks.

Read the passage “You’re a Good Man, Charles Schulz!” and then answer Numbers 4 through 6.

You’re a Good Man, Charles Schulz!

1 “You’re a good man, Charlie

Brown!” These are some very

famous words. But who wrote

these words? Was it a president?

Was it a poet? No, it was Charles

Monroe Schulz, a great cartoonist

of our time!

2 Charles Schulz is best known

for his comic strip Peanuts. He was

born in Minnesota in 1922. For

years, he was known as “Sparky.”

An uncle gave him this name. It

was the name of a horse in an old

comic strip. The name stayed with

him throughout his life.

3 Schulz served in the U.S.

Army during World War II.

After the war, he returned to

Minnesota. He took a job as

an art teacher. Then he started

making drawings. He first used

the name Charlie Brown for a

boy in one of these drawings.

Later, he added a dog that looked

much like Snoopy. The drawings

ran in many newspapers.

4 In the late 1940s, one of

Schulz’s cartoons appeared in

the Saturday Evening Post. This

was a very popular magazine

at that time. His cartoon strips

started catching on. More and

more people started saying that

Schulz’s strips gave advice about

life. He once was asked where he

got his ideas. Schulz said he got

them from the things he did and

things he saw.

5 Schulz and his family moved

to California in the late 1950s.

While living there, he was asked

to put together some ideas for a

television special. The special

was based on his comic strip. It

received good reviews. This led

to other television specials.

6 The Peanuts comic strip ran

for around fifty years. It appeared

in thousands of newspapers

throughout the world.

7 Schulz died in Santa Rosa,

California, on February 12, 2000,

at age 77. Before he died, Schulz

made a request. He asked that

the Peanuts characters always

stay the same. He did not want

anyone to draw new comic strips

based on them. His wishes have

been honored. Reruns of the strip

are still shown. New television

specials have been made, too.

The ideas come from comic

strips that were published while

Schulz was alive.

8 Many people have heard the

saying “Happiness is a warm

puppy.” It came from Schulz.

He has inspired many television

programs. And his comic strip

has been turned into a play.

True happiness is remembering

the man who first created the

Peanuts comic strip!

The Golden Goose

1 Once there was a goose that had precious golden feathers.

No one had ever seen a goose as beautiful. Nor had anyone

seen one so valuable. Not far away from this goose lived a

very poor woman. This woman had two daughters.

2 The goose saw how this family struggled to survive. He

said to himself, “If I give them one after another of my golden

feathers, the mother can sell them. This will bring in good

money. She and her daughters can then live in comfort.” So,

the goose flew away to the woman’s house.

3 The woman saw the goose. Then she asked, “Why do you

come here to our humble house? We have nothing to give you.”

4 “But I have something to offer you,” said the goose. “I will

provide some of my feathers, one at a time. You can sell them.

They will bring in plenty of money. You and your daughters

can live comfortably.”

5 The Goose plucked out one of his shimmering golden

feathers. Then he gave the woman the valuable gleaming feather.

Then he soared away. From time to time he returned. In each

instance he left another feather. This continued for many years.

6 The mother and her daughters sold the feathers for enough

money to keep them living comfortably. One day the mother

said to her daughters, “We shouldn’t trust this goose. Some

day he may fly away and never return. Then we will be

destitute again. Let us take all of his feathers the very next

time he comes.”

7 The daughter said, “This will hurt the goose. We will not

do such a thing.”

8 But the mother was greedy. The next time the golden

goose came, she seized him with both hands. She yanked out

every one of his golden feathers. The goose was irate. He

muttered to himself, “I have been very good to the woman

and her daughters. Why would she betray me like this?”

Unable to fly away without feathers, the angry goose waddled

away to nurse his wounds.

9 What the greedy woman did not realize was that the

goose’s feathers were unusual in another way. If his feathers

are plucked out against his desire, they no longer remain

golden but turn white. Then they have no more value than

ordinary feathers. When the woman awoke the next morning,

she saw that the feathers she had taken from the goose were

not golden, but white.

10 Soon, just as the woman had feared, she found herself

destitute again. Her daughters, disgusted with their foolish

mother, left home. And the goose, having been mistreated,

never returned again.

The School Play

1 It was the first day of rehearsal for the school play. Mr.

Wong, whose specialty was acting, informed the students

that they were going to learn a new way to show what kind

of person they were playing.

2 “Ramon,” he said, “in the play, you’re famished. How are

you going to show that?”

3 Ramon shouted, “Give me something to eat!”

4 “That is one way to do it,” laughed Mr. Wong, “but can

you demonstrate hunger for us without talking about eating?”

5 “Without talking about eating?” Ramon asked, showing

his surprise. Mr. Wong nodded. Ramon scratched his head

and thought for a moment about what he should do. Then he

turned to Lisa, licked his lips, and said, “That apple you’re

holding looks really good!”

6 “Excellent!” said Mr. Wong. “I got that message loud

and clear!”

7 Mr. Wong turned to Lisa. “Lisa, in the play, your character

is exasperated. Can you show us that?”

8 “I wish I could, but I have no clue what that word means!”

cried Lisa, throwing up her hands and stamping her foot.

9 “That was great!” said Mr. Wong. “See? You can show the

audience something without talking about it. You don’t have

to name it at all. Trevor, do you want to help us out and

go next?”

10 “No!” Trevor snorted. “I don’t want to help! I don’t even

want to be here! Can I leave?”

11 Mr. Wong gazed at Trevor. Then he turned to the others

and said, “Trevor just showed us two different emotions.

Does anybody know what those emotions are?”

12 “Not wanting to help was pretty selfish,” said Tony.

13 “And wanting to leave was being cranky,” Suki added.

14 “Right on both counts!” Mr. Wong agreed. “That’s the kind

of person Trevor is playing! Beth, are you still backstage?

Front and center, please.”

15 Beth was sweeping backstage. She stepped forward

carrying a broom and a pan. When she reached the front of

the stage, she dropped everything. She bent down to pick up

the fallen items, but she lost her balance and tumbled to the

ground in a clumsy heap. Then she tried to pick up the pan,

but it flew out of her hands and sailed into the air. Everyone

noticed the sudden commotion.

16 “She’s bumbling!” everyone yelled as they laughed at

Beth’s actions.

17 “Perfect!” said Mr. Wong. “I think this is going to be the

best play we have ever done!”
