Day1(MondayJuly31,afternoon)WekickedoffwithwelcomesfromJeffBooth(JPL)andtheSTDTchairs.MattBolcargaveanupdatefromtheengineeringteamonLUVOIRArchitectureA(15-mdiametertelescope).Furtherinformationappearsbelowinthe“DetailedMinutes”section.ThebulkofthedesignworkforArchitectureAiscomplete.Thetelescopeandthreeofthefourinstruments(CoronagraphA,LUMOSA,andHDI)havebeenthroughtheGSFCInstrumentDesignLabprocess.ThespacecraftandsunshieldweredesignedduringtheMissionDesignLab(MDL)run,whichcapsacompletemissiondesignstudy.Thefourthinstrument(POLLUX)isbeingdesignedinEurope;progressisbeingmadeandthefinaldesignwillbedeliveredintimefortheFinalReport.Afewremainingblackboxeswillbefilledinthecomingmonths.Tofacilitatethis,specificationsforthefiber-fedspectrographswithinthecoronagraphneedtobesetbytheExoplanetsWorkingGroupsoon.WethenheardabriefupdateonthePOLLUXspectropolarimeterfromCo-PIJean-ClaudeBouretofLaboratoired‘AstrophysiquedeMarseille.WethenproceededwithupdatesontheInterimReport.AkiRobergepresentedestimatedpagecounts(seeTable1).Thetotal(~180pages)ismorethanwe’dplannedattheAprilSTDTmeeting(~150pages).Suggestionsforkeepingthereportlengthundercontrolincluded1)puttinghigh-levelmotivationsintheIntroduction,2)tryingtostreamlineeachsection,3)movingmanydetailsintothe“FurtherLUVOIRScienceCases”appendix,and4)utilizingoutsidereports(e.g.theExoPAGSAG15report)andpublishedpapers.Therewasadiscussionontheoverallphilosophyforthereportanditsintendedaudience.WeexpectthatthehardwarechapterswillexpandintheFinalReport,whilehopefullythesciencechapterswillbelargelycompleteaftertheInterimReport.Forreviewofthescience Figure1:Wordcloudfor5thLUVOIRSTDTmeeting.

contentinbothreports,wewillrelyontheLUVOIRSeniorAdvisorsGroup.NASAHQwillonlyreview“implementation”andprovidefeedbackaftertheInterimReport.WethenheardupdatesfromJohnO’MearaontheCosmicOriginschapters(5,6,&7),MarkMarleyontheExoplanet&SolarSystemchapters(3&4),andMattBolcaronthedesignandtechnologychapters(9,10,&11).ThegoalistohavethebulkofthetextinhandtotheleadsbyaroundAug15.Atthatpoint,wewillneedtomovethereportdraftfromGoogleDocs(orwhateverfilesharingsystem)toaWordfile.Thenonlyalimitednumberofpeoplewillinteractwiththedocument.Nextcamealengthycommunicationsandgraphicsdiscussion.Wehaveanumberofresourcesforgeneratinghigh-qualityscienceandtechnicalgraphics.PleasestartmakingsketchesandsendingthemtoShawnD-G.Furthermore,sincethisisthe21stcentury,thereportscanbe“multi-media”documentswithembeddedvideographics(orlinkstovideos).PlansfortheJan2018AASmeetingwerediscussed.Currentideaistwosplintermeetingsduringthemainmeeting:onewithtalksandonewithhands-onworkwithsimulationtools.WedidatoolssplinteratthelastwinterAAS,butthistime,wewanttogetmoreoutofit(capturepeople’swork).JasonTumlinsondemonstratedthecurrentversionsoftheonlinesimulationtools,whichcannowsaveandrestorethesettingsandresultsofacalculation.Wewouldalsoliketodevelopawebformtocapturetextonpeople’ssciencecases(forusein“FurtherScienceCases”appendix).Shawnshowedthecurrentversionofthenew,mobile-friendlyLUVOIRpublicwebsite.TheplanistofinalizeitbySept.1.WethenwrappedupthemeetingforthedayandwentoutforsomereallygoodMexicanfood(thankstoLeonidasMoustakisforarrangingthat).

TheseconddaykickedoffwithdiscussionaboutinternationalinterestinadditionalLUVOIRinstrumentstudies(expressedbyJAXAandtheSwissSpaceOffice).Allagreethatmoreinterestisgreat.Akipresentedasuggestedscenariotocaptureadditionalinstrumentideaswhiledealingwithafewcomplications/concerns(seepresentationslides).Insum,we’lladdanotherappendixfor“AdditionalLUVOIRInstrumentConcepts”fornewideasatwhateverlevelofmaturity(fromafewparagraphstoactualstudies).Theengineeringteamcanprovidetelescopeparametersandmass,power,&volumeallocationstoanygroupthatwantsthem.ThePOLLUXinstrumentstudywillstayinthemainreport.NointernationalinstrumentswillbecostedbyAerospaceaspartofthisstudy.Therewasgeneralagreementthatthiswasagoodsolution.ThenwemovedontoapresentationfromAkiaboutDesignReferenceMissions(DRMs).Theseare“meanttoprovidequantitativerackupoftotalsciencecasethatcanbeachievedwithplannedhardwareunderrealisticconditions”.DRMsareoneofthefewthingsthatwearerequiredtodelivertoNASAHQwiththeFinalReport.Inprinciple,theyarestraightforward.Inpractice,DRMsvaryalotincomprehensivenessandlevelofdetail.Afewexampleswereshown(TPF-C,HORUS,Exo-S).ForthepurposesoftheLUVOIRstudy,wehaveadoptedaprimemissiondurationof5years(with10yearsofconsumables).Accurateobservationoverheadsarealwaysdifficulttodetermineatsuchandearlystage;we’lllikelyadoptreasonablepercentagesontheexposuretimes.Finally,it’snotfeasibleforustodocompleteDRMsforeverysciencecase.Ideally,we’llhaveDRMsforeverymajorsciencecase(thesignaturesciencequestions)andthenleavesomepercentageofthe5yearsunassigned(“opentime”foradditionalscienceinvestigations).DebraFischerthenledaninterestingdiscussionofLUVOIRtechnologydevelopmentwithcubesats(andothersmallmissions).TherewasgeneralagreementthatwhilenoteveryLUVOIRtechnologychallengecanbeaddressedthisway,somecertainlycan.AparticularlypromisingareaseemstobeUVcoatings.Wethenwentintotwosplintersessions(COR&PCOS,EXO&SS)tostartdefiningthecalculationswe’llneedtodo.Afterlunch,wewentintosplintersessionsonInterimReportwriting(EXO&SS,COR&PCOS,Design&Tech).WeendedthedaywithapresentationbyMattBolcaroninitialdecisionsforLUVOIRArchitectureB(designruntobegininthefall).TheoriginallyplannedinstrumentcomplementonArchitectureB(CoronagraphB,LUMOSB,ONIRS)didn’tincludeacamerathatcouldbeusedforguiding.We’llneedtoincorporatethatcapabilityintooneoftheinstruments,therebyalsorecapturingsomeoftheHDIscience.WhichinstrumentisTBD.TherewasaphilosophicaldiscussionaboutwhetherArchitectureBshouldbeascaled-downversionofArchitectureAoradistinctlydifferentfacility.Therewasageneralconsensusforthelatteroption.Finally,thedecisionwasmadetostudyaRitchey-Chretien(RC)telescopeforArchitectureB(theArchitectureAtelescopeisaTMA).
