1st day: individual rail travel from home to Lucerne. Then a nostalgic journey by steam boat or a modern ride on a motor boat across Lake Lucerne to Flüelen, both in 2nd class, which takes about 3½ hours. You change to SBB here and travel in 1st class on the Gotthard route to Bellinzona, then change to 2nd class to Lugano. Overnight stay with breakfast in Lugano.

2nd day: individual return journey by train from Lugano to place of residence or an extended stay.

Experience history.

The journey with the Gotthard Panorama Express runs from Lucerne to Flüelen by boat and then on by train in the 1st class panorama coach or in the 2nd class coach via the historical Gotthard panorama route to Ticino.

In Lucerne you board a steamboat and glide across Lake Lucerne, past mystical coves and picturesque countryside, while enjoying culinary delicacies. You travel past countless places from early Switzerland that are steeped in history. Above all, Rütli Meadow, which saw the founding of Switzerland in 1291, as well as the Schiller Stone and the Tell Chapel.

In Flüelen the panorama train is ready to depart and takes you on the historical Gotthard route. You have three views of the church of Wassen here, which has become world-famous due to the bold railway facilities with its many loop tunnels. The journey continues southwards between Göschenen and Airolo through the Gotthard Tunnel, which was opened in 1882. You can also look forward to seeing the varied Mediterranean Ticino countryside here. Welcome to the region of palm trees.

As from January 1, 2017 in Ticino public transport is freely available to its visitors throughout the entire canton. An additional incentive and thank-you to the visitors who decide to travel to Ticino in 2017 as Switzerland does offer the most tightly knit public transport network in the world. The reduced entrance fees to the 30 most important leisure activities in the canton provide a further benefit. These include the funiculars to the most popular excursion sum-mits and major tourist attractions, as well as shipping companies on the lakes. The «Ticino Ticket» is for visitors who stay overnight in hotels, youth hostels and on camping sites. They are given the «Ticino Ticket» upon arrival and it is valid until the end of their day of departure.
