Getting to Know You . . . Doreen Slattery by Janet Dysart Campbell River was Doreen’s birthplace, but home in the early

days was logging camps. Her mum was a stenographer for HR McMillan, and her father ran a logging company. Life in the logging camps was hard for her mother and schooling was with only one teacher for all the camp children. One of three children, Doreen moved with her family (minus her dad who stayed in the camps) to a house in Dunbar. School was much better for them as

Doreen started elementary school in Queen Elizabeth School and then moved to Lord Byng for High School.

After school, Doreen attended business school near Granville Street followed by various secretarial jobs in Vancouver. She married Pat Slattery, a former sports columnist and men's fashion columnist for The Vancouver Sun, as well as a North Vancouver District Alderman for nine years. In 1954, they moved to North Vancouver when the British Empire Games were on, which was a reporting job for Pat. All three of their children attended local schools, while Doreen was quite involved in volunteering at the school and other community tasks.

Retirement meant seeking the sun--Hawaii was their favourite holiday spot. Doreen continued going there after Pat passed away. Sometime later she met Jan Lockmuller, a long-time member of Mollie Nye House (LVSS, LVSA) who suggested her joining for crafts and bus trips.

Following an injury last year, Doreen is looking forward to resuming her favourite sport-- Pitch and Putt at Murdo Frazier Golf! She is also looking forward to continuing iPad lessons with Mary Robinson at Mollie Nye House.

A Visit to the Lupin Fields . . . by Lorraine Campbell On June 7th, the Wednesday Walking Group led by Del Dimock visited the lupin fields

located near the Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant in Lynn Canyon. The lupins were at their best putting on a magnificent display of purple, rose, pink and blue. Over the years, they have reseeded themselves to cover about an acre near the Plant. Lupin commonly known as “Lupinus” is a flowering perennial plant of the legume family. There are over 200 species in North and South America. Lupinus Polyphyllus, the purple variety are normally seen in the wild. Many colourful lupin garden varieties have been cultivated over the years and sold in local garden shops. (Photos by Del Dimock)

"Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Cooney is a lovely children's book telling the story of her great Aunt Alice who became known as the Lupin Lady. Working in a library, Aunt Alice eventually traveled the world. When she retired near the seaside. she decided to walk around the country sprinkling lupin seeds. She succeeded in making the world a more beautiful place, a promise made to her grandfather as a young child. At the time, she had no idea how she would accomplish this. So, we "thank you" Miss Rumphius as we now have our own little bit of lupin heaven in Lynn Canyon."
