A Two-Week Adventure!

Throughout this fortnight, the classes, programs, field trips, and activities will expose you to the breadth of a liberal arts and sciences education and

the vibrancy of campus life at our residential college.

All the events on this schedule have been labeled according to one of fourteen categories. Although we have only listed one category next to each event, in actuality many of these experiences can fall under multiple categories.

Being aware of these categories will help you to remember these unique opportunities, and also reflect on the impact that each

experience will have on your life, goals, and aspirations.

SUNDAY JULY 14, 2019 Optional Morning Worship Opportunities include: 8:30 AM Catholic Mass at Church of the Resurrection in PERSON historic Muncy, Pa.

14 miles from campus, this active parish is located in the oldest borough in Lycoming County. In addition to Mass, students will enjoy a drive down Main Street—a street lined with beautiful 18th century homes. Meet outside Asbury Hall at 8:00.

Note about worship opportunities: All religious and worship opportunities on July 14 and 21 are optional. Other opportunities are available upon request. 9:00 AM Making the Lounge OUR Lounge LEAD Students not attending the optional worship services will spend time in the Asbury Hall Lounge with the LCPFs. 4:00 PM Cruising the Scenic Susquehanna River NETWORK All aboard the Hiawatha paddleboat, one of central

Pennsylvania’s main attractions, as we head down the historic Susquehanna River for a relaxing cruise. Joining us is Mary-Louise Paucke, Alumna and past President of the Alumni Executive Council.

6:15 PM Dinner in the Dining Hall 8:00 PM Break a Leg! (Dragon’s Lair) FINA One popular major for creative expression at a liberal arts college

is theatre. Dr. Biliana Stoytcheva-Horissian (“Dr. B”), Associate Professor of Theatre, joins us to present this hands-on acting workshop.

MONDAY JULY 15, 2019 1st DAY OF CLASSES 8:00 AM Breakfast in the Dining Hall 8:45 AM Orientation to Campus Computing Students in the STEM group will report to Lynn 257 and

Heim 131 for orientation, while students in the HUMA group will report to the Wesley Seminar Room.

Students are earning two credits for the work they will do in the academic courses. Students will either be taking the HUMA or the STEM course.

Dr. David Broussard, Assistant Professor of Biology, discusses how geologic time, earth history, and evolution integrate to support the understanding of extinct plants, animals, and environments through paleontology. Note: all students must wear long pants and closed-toe shoes for this class.

11:30 AM A Date with the Provost (Jonas Room) C-PREP Dr. Philip Sprunger, Provost and Dean of the College,

welcomes us for a catered lunch and a discussion on the values of a liberal arts education.

How do you know what you know? Is the gap between knowing and believing vast or small? What is the difference between the two? Dr. Mike Heyes, Assistant Professor of Religion, will lead us in an investigation of the distinction between religion and science and their relationship to one another.

8:45 PM Pigeons, Trees, Cobras and Crows COMMUNITY Finding meaningful ways to destress is important for college students. “Epic Fitness by Buffy” in Williamsport introduces us to these and other poses and positions. This class is designed for all of us, whether we are experienced at yoga or first- timers.

3:15 PM Nonverbal Communication: What are we really saying? FYS - SSCI (Lynn 257) It’s not just what we say that is important, but also how we say

it. Much of the communication that occurs in our relationships is nonverbal and conveys even more than the actual words we utter. Join Dr. Tina Norton, Assistant Professor of Psychology, to discuss how nonverbal cues such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language affect how we communicate with others.

5:00 PM Picnicking, Swimming, and Ice Cream, Oh My! LEAD Dr. Dan Miller, Vice President for Student Life and Dean of

Students, and his awesome wife, Barb, will welcome us into their home for a fun and relaxing afternoon of swimming, outdoor games, and a cookout. For dessert? A clue: it’s accompanied by a playful melody that can first be heard three blocks away.

8:00 PM Historian on the Move (Lynn 257) HUMA Have you ever heard a teacher or professor say they are

taking a sabbatical and wondered what that even means? Just back from a year-long sabbatical, Dr. Cullen Chandler, Professor of History, will share stories of his travels, research, and projects.

9:00 PM Pool and Recreation Time! LEAD The Lamade Gymnasium pool is all ours. The Keiper

Recreation Center facilities have also been opened for you including the courts, track, and cardio room. Have fun!

between the College and the City and hosts exhibitions from around the world. Artists-in-residence show their work here, as do our art faculty and students. On exhibit now is “Singular Fable” by John McKaig, whose use of nautical imagery, water, and the human figure communicates the essential ideas of how we relate to each other, how we affect each other, and how to move to a space that is empowering and encouraging.

4:00 PM Community Arts Center FINA Originally constructed during the roaring 1920’s, this magnificent state-of-the-art theater now stands as a symbol of

and home for Williamsport’s impressive and diverse arts scene, welcoming touring productions and hosting many community-based organizations. Lycoming College is a proud partner of the CAC: our students display their art and debut their films there. Lycoming College’s Honors Convocation is also held here annually in the Spring. Our gratitude to Todd Mertz, House Manager, for welcoming us today.

4:45 PM The Stonehouse COMMUNITY Tonight, we enjoy The Stonehouse, a trendy downtown

restaurant, which has a unique wood-fired oven that uses only locally forested hardwoods with no other source of heat. Enjoy this delicious and unique experience.

7:00 PM Game Night in Snowden Library LEAD Liberal arts college libraries are best known for providing

countless resources and research help to students, but at residential campuses, the librarians also like to have a little fun!

3:15 PM Speak Up! Public Speaking for College and Beyond C-PREP (Lynn 257) Public speaking is essential to success. Mary Broussard, Instructional Services Librarian and Associate Professor, will present some basic principles of public speaking, emphasizing preparation and dealing with stage fright. We will use the party game Snake Oil to think about persuasion and audience analysis as well as work in small groups to prepare a short special-occasion speech.

4:30 PM Dinner in the Dining Hall 5:30 PM The Wide Eye: Poetry and the Liberal Arts HUMA (College Archives)

Shanna Wheeler, Director of Lycoming’s Writing Center and author of two books of poetry, will read a sampling of her work to show us how her education and profession in the liberal arts have enriched her life and writing. Afterwards, the poet will treat us to a book-signing.

7:15 PM Art Workshops (Fine Arts Building) FINA An important part of a liberal arts education is exposure to the

fine arts. Howard Tran, Professor of Art and Jeremiah Johnson, Instructor of Art, offer these hands-on workshops in which they encourage you to exercise your creative side.

9:00 AM Paddle and a Picnic LEAD Jae Ellison, Director of Outdoor Leadership & Education, takes us

to Little Pine State Park—2,158 acres surrounded by a beautiful mountain section of Tiadaghton State Forest in the Pennsylvania Wilds. Guided and instructed by Jae, we will enjoy canoes, kayaks, swimming, and a picnic. Be sure to keep your eyes open because you just might spot a Haliaeetus leucocephalus. (Hint: this bird was added to the official seal of the United States of America in 1782).

3:30 PM Community Service at West House Personal Care Home SERVE Personal growth and development are important

components of a liberal arts education. At Lycoming College, through collaboration with academic, faith-based, and community partners, students are provided with quality service experiences that challenge them to reflect upon the importance of their contribution, and the greater impact it has on the local, national, and global communities. Today’s service experience brings us to West House Personal Care Home—an 18 bed facility that welcomes all, even those without the ability to pay.

10:00 AM Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland SSCI Located in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, Reptiland is a zoo

specializing in reptiles and amphibians. The zoo houses mambas, cobras, vipers, pythons and other snakes, as well as alligators, tortoises, lizards, and frogs. They also have a walk-through aviary filled with colorful parakeets. Current Lycoming College Warrior Joel Noble ’22 is doing his WISE Internship there. Perhaps we’ll spot Joel in this habitat!

4:00 PM Bowling and Bouncing COMMUNITY Located in downtown Williamsport, the Liberty Arena offers

plenty of fun activities, even for college students who need a healthy break from their studies. Today, we will enjoy bowling, a trampoline park, laser tag, and a full arcade.

4:10 PM The Mathematics of Gambling: Counting Cards (Lynn 257) MATH Lycoming College alumnus, Director of the Math Center, and

Lecturer of Mathematics, Chris Reed (’05), will lead a hands-on lesson involving card counting. Participants will learn a new game and then see how counting cards can help them do better. The session will close with a discussion of card counting in casinos, particularly for the game of 21 (Blackjack).

5:00 PM Open forum with Lycoming College WISE Interns PERSON (Jane Schultz Room)

Dr. Susan Ross, Associate Provost for Experiential Learning and Director of the Center for Enhanced Academic Experiences (CEAE) will host this event and the dinner to follow. Twenty-three of Lycoming College’s amazing students are doing internships in the Williamsport area this summer. They will share with us how these opportunities came about and how they will impact their future careers. One of the students, Catherine Juarez, not only participated at Lycoming College Prep, but served as a Lycoming College Prep Facilitator (’17).

remind us of the importance of destressing by introducing us to these and other poses and positions.

7:00 PM Take Me Out to the Ball Game! COMMUNITY The Williamsport Crosscutters, a Class A Short Season Affiliate of

the Philadelphia Phillies, host the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. Bowman Field is the second oldest minor league park operating in the country. You will be given money for dinner to be used at concession stands of your choosing.
