A Note from Mrs. Davis…

Dear Families,

We ALL made it through the school year journey, thanks to great collaboration! Now I hope you are onto enjoying the summer with your family and friends.

You can still encourage your child’s learning over the summer. Summer reading projects were sent home and there are a variety of activities taking place at school including presentations by the Salina Free Library. Check out our website for more information of upcoming activities and links where your children can practice a variety of skills. Please continue to encourage reading and practicing math facts and concepts throughout the summer.

I am looking forward to continuing our learning journey in September. In the meantime, enjoy your summer! Rest and Relax!

As always, thanks for all your support!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Davis Principal

2015-2016 School Budget News:

Dear Lyncourt Residents:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their overwhelming support with the passage of the 2015-2016 Lyncourt UFSD school budget. The budget passed in dominating fashion 187-50 (77% approval rating, which is the highest percentage that we have on record) along with the Lyncourt Recreation program and the Town of Salina Free Library. Board members elected for 3-year terms were Kimberly Vespi and David Florczyk. Anthony Maggi was elected to fill a 2-year term to replace Julia Riverso.

In closing, the Lyncourt Board of Education is extremely proud of the educational programs that we offer to our Lyncourt children and with your continued support, those will continue. Thank you again for supporting our efforts to provide a quality public education to the children of the Lyncourt Union Free School District. Have a safe and healthy summer!

Respectfully,

James J. Austin Superintendent

The Blue Crew Heads to Wegman’s for a Field Trip

Lyncourt BLUE Crew and Mr. Bolsei’s Middle School ELA Class had a wonderful opportunity to visit the Dewitt Wegman’s in March. The students were welcomed and presented a class in preparing and selecting healthy snacks. Wegman’s generously contributed the delicious spread of: apple and cheese slices, pita pocket sandwiches with turkey, hummus, and cucumber, and strawberry, yogurt, and granola parfaits. The students also had a very educational tour of the store to learn about the different departments and jobs within the store.

The BLUE Crew proceeded to participate in a scavenger hunt to find ingredients on our grocery list to make a healthy Trail Mix. The students had to categorize to find items and sometimes weigh the groceries. The students took turns checking out. They used money skills and good manners when addressing the cashier. The students enjoyed their community-based skills practice. Mr. Bolsei’s students took the opportunity to learn about international cuisine, nutrition, and food distribution. The students looked for healthier alternatives to some of their favorite prepackaged snack foods. They concluded their visit by investigating the origin of ingredients found in their families’ favorite recipes.

Lyncourt School would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Wegman’s Dewitt for their generosity and warm-welcome. We are especially grateful to Wegman’s Staff Memebers, Rachel Philleo and Arlene for providing our students with a memorable, fun-filled experience.

Zoo-to-You

This was the 6th grade entry event to our PBL (project based learning) on endangered animals. We learned about the ball python, the condor, and the box turtle. We also learned about what we can do to help. We will be creating videos about endangered animals at our local zoo, as well as planning a fundraiser to adopt some animals!

Lyncourt School’s Vegetable Garden We are excited to have a gardening area developing out in the backyard of our school! Perennial Landscapes has donated their landscaping expertise to design and install a garden with shady and sunny areas. Mr. Bolsei and Mrs. Markham, one of our substitutes, divided perennials from their own gardens to get us started. Local business, Clifton Recycling Inc., graciously donated the compost and mulch for our gardens. Our PTO generously gave “seed money” to help the kindergarten – first grades start a raised bed vegetable garden, built by Mr. Morgese. Students attending the summer programs will be able to help tend and harvest from the garden. There is interest throughout the school in adding more gardening beds, as well as looking into composting and a rain barrel. The Wellness Committee is also on board with these efforts and we’re hoping to be able to get some fall snacks from this year’s garden. We’re also looking into grants for adding an “outdoor classroom” area and a greenhouse for student to begin planting in each year. It has truly become a community garden. We hope you’ll stop by to see the first stage of this exciting new project behind the new gym area.

“Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr”

On the two magical nights of Thurs-day, March 19th and Friday, March 20th, the Lyncourt School Drama Club per-formed “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr” in the DeAngelis Auditorium. Forty students in grades 5-8 were involved with singing, acting, dancing, set design, and stage management. All in attendance sang the praises of the cast for their flawless performances. They truly were two very memorable shows.

“Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr” was a resounding success under the direction of Marian Hayden and Loraine Ridall with assistance by: Sue Maloney, Dan Retz, Tracy Trinca, and Rachel Gross. Thanks go out to the dozens of other people who were instrumental in perfecting this show. We couldn’t have done it without this team effort.

NJHS Celebrates World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on

March 21st (3-21) each year. This day is used

to promote understanding of what Down Syndrome

is, what it means to have Down Syndrome and how

important it is to show support of those in our society

who have Down Syndrome. NJHS had a celebration

as a school on Friday, March 20th. They celebrates

with a CRAZY SOCK DAY—Staff and students

wore their craziest pair of socks, mismatched

socks, or more than one pair!

A little information about Down Syndrome:

“In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is

stored in genes. Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits

and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes. Typically, the

nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited

from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.

This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down

syndrome. A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant

to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm - although each person with Down syndrome is a

unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.”

K-5 MATH RELAY Mrs. Chase wanted to add some bounce, zing and friendly competition among grades K-5 with a Math Relay! Classes were broken up into teams of eight (approximately 4 students per team). They had to solve math problems and each team was timed. All times for each grade level were added together and the GRADE with the fastest time won The Golden Calculator (along with a movie…which comes with bragging rights! The second place team won extra recess and the third place team won popsicles. The students had a great time while showing off their math skills.
