DIRECTOR 'S NOTES
In 1894 when ARMS AND TH E MAN (Shaw 's 4th attempt at p laywri t ing) fir st appeare d o n the stag e, British aud iences had not ye t learned to laugh at m ilitar y hero ic s. It has been suggested that Gilbert and Su ll ivan's PIRATES OF PENZANCE (the all the rage of the day) had begu n to chip away the gilt fro m the glory of dyin g in noble causes, but w hil e G & S we re considered o nly co mic, Sha w had social sat ire in mind ARMS AND THE MAN was consid ered libel on heroism; the Pri nc e of Wales (la ter Geor ge VII) p oclaim ed q uite simp ly '' ... the author is mad " !
In 1910 Oscar St rauss set the story to music and call ed it THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIE R, g ivin g ly rical immor tality to Raina 's dev otion to Sergius in th e hi t so ng , "My He ro ." Yet it is the pla y that keeps finding its way to the stage .
The Play remains fresh becau se of its attack of the heroics of war , on the pseudoroma nce or war , and on fool ish notions in general . This product ion , admittedly co nve ntional , attempts to shoot down some of people 's romantic notions without shoo t ing down the people.
