"AND HERE'S THE REST OF THE STORY .... " Antigone: Backwards and Forwards

The figure of Antigone is one of the most compelling of the panoply of heroes and legends that populate the ancient and venerable Greek drama. Her story alone commands our attention, but for the audiences that first saw Sophocles' Antigone in 442 B. C., she was so_ much more than meets the eye. The Greeks who attended the Theatre of Dionysus in the fifth century had an advantage over us-they would have already been intimately familiar with the story-its history and its future. And beneath the talk of the gods, they would have recognized a very human story about the choices we make and the consequences of those choices-a perfect moral storm of human arrogance.

Antigone's story is set in the city of Thebes. Shimmering in the mists where history meets legend, the memory of Thebes was already ancient to Antigone's first audience. Thebes is not even listed in the catalog of ships in Homer's Iliad-it had already vanished. To the sophisticated Athenian of the age of Pericles, Thebes would have been the ghost of a cruder, less cultured civilization. And to a proud city poised on the brink of war, it would have been a warning against the human arrogance that takes it upon itself to speak for the gods.

Ultimately the saga of Thebes is the story of sin coming home to roost, and all the vultures descend around Antigone. She is the daughter of Oedipus, he who had traveled to Thebes to escape the Delphic prophecy only to run headlong into it-ignorant of his true birth, he saves Thebes from the curse of the Sphinx ... and marries his own mother after having unwittingly killing his own father. Oedipus atones for his transgressions by putting out his own eyes and exiling himself from the city where he had been king. Creon-the brothr of his wife and mother-becomes regent. In Sophocles' version of the legend, Oedipus wanders in the care of his daughter Antigone until he finally finds rest at Colonus under the. protection of Theseus, the king of Athens. Creon becomes regent while the sons of Oedipus squabble over the throne, and Oedipus curses the selfishness of his sons Eteocles and Polynices, prophesying their death in their eagerness to divide the kingdom. The curse, like the whole history of Thebes, is the expression of the reality that actions have consequences. The dominoes of human pride and frailty stretch back to the founding of the city:

*Cadmus, instructed by the gods to stop looking for his sister Europa (abducted by the Casanova of the gods-Zeus) and

iri~tead found a city, kills a serpent sacred to Ares. He sows the se'rpent's teeth in the ground and they sprout up as the Spartoi, whose descendants are the noble families of Thebes. When he marries Harmonia, her dowry is a necklace forged by the god Hephaestus--the crown jewels of the city.

*Lycus steals the throne from Oedipus' grandfather Labdacus. He and his wife Dirce pay the price, and from her blood springs the fountain at the gates of Thebes that bears her name.

*In exile, Oedipus' father Laius violates the hospitality of Pelops by running off with his son; it is Pelops' curse that condemns Oedipus to his fate.

All the lines of dominoes cross at the gates of Thebes. Eteocles and Polynices agree to share the throne in alternate years. Eteocles takes the throne first, and Polynices is given custody of the necklace of Harmonia-the very symbol of the citts birthright and blessing. When it becomes apparent that Eteocles has no intention of . turning over the kingship to his brother, Polynices goes to Argos to raise an army and claim his rightful place. But Amphiaurus, one of the Argive leaders, is a prophet and has foreseen the expedition is doomed. Polynices bribes the man's wife to win his support; he gives her Harmonia's necklace, the very jewels of Thebes. Amphiaurus reluctantly agrees to the invasion, knowing it means death for all but one, but swears his sons to vengeance. The Seven Against Thebes are on the mar-ch, each attacking a separate gate. The dominoes fall.

*Tiresias prophesies the city will be safe if a son of the Spartoi sacrifices himself to atone for Cadmus' slaying of Ares' sacred serpent. Creon's son Menoeceus accepts the responsibility, plunging to his death from the gate iinto the bloodbegotten fountain of Dirce.

*Eteocles and Polynices meet in single combat and meet their father's curse-their bodies lie on the plains outside the gate.

Now Creon is regent again, and still the dominoes fall. Funeral rites are the most sacred of all obligations to the Greekthe necessary preparation for entry into Hades for the dead and the protection against wandering spirits for the living. Creon decrees funeral rites for the usurper but not the attacker. Antigone cannot accept that-both are her brothers. Creon will face the consequences of his action. And still the dominoes fall. Ten years later the sons of Amphiaurus will revenge their father, and Thebes willl disappear from the pages of history. But that couldn't happen here-not in Athens. Not in America. COULD IT? "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's."
