President’s Report, April 2016

The joys of National Car Rallies!

I talked briefly in my March report about our excursion to Victoria for the Cadillac Club’s National Rally.

And I included a couple of photographs. Since that time we have also attended the Jaguar Club’s National

Rally in Queensland. They say a picture speaks a thousand words, so rather than try to explain these

events, here are some more pictures!

Hopefully, we will be able to arrange some equipment to show you more at our next meeting, Bryan White.

BALLINA VINTAGE CAR CLUB DISPLAY On Sunday 3rd April, sixteen of the Summerland Car Club cars met up at the Ballina RSL for the car display.

Although there were not a lot of cars on show it is always interesting to see vehicles owned by other people.

There were also several bikes on display.

Our members got there around 8am and, after a chat and look around, dispersed to source out breakfast at the

RSL or coffee in the Ballina CBD. The weather was good, if warm, and it was a good time for catching up with

other car enthusiasts. Thanks to all our members who attended.

APRIL CAR CLUB RUN - BRIAN KING AND BYRON BAY GOLF CLUB Sixteen of our members met at Lismore carpark at 9.00am, with wonderful hopes of an interesting day and blue skies. We were soon disillusioned with the latter, when the cloud cover rolled in. Luckily Rudy put the cover on the Sprite. Bob Sweeney had trouble with his cover, but after taking it home and saying a few choice words he got it to work and managed to catch up with us at morning tea. We took a scenic route out along Wyrallah Rd, Skyline Road to Rous Road, on to Alphadale Road to the Bruxner Highway. Brian King has his home and workshop just off Pearces Creek Road. We picked up three more cars on the way and several other members made their way directly to Brian and Marion’s home. We were also to have three gentlemen (Kim Dahl, Doug Clarke and Ken Naughton) from the Grafton Vintage car club join us, but unfortunately for them their car broke down just out of Casino. I do hope they got home without too much trouble. To call Brian’s collection amazing is underestimating it. I think everyone who attended (those who knew what they were looking at mechanically and those of us who just like to look at cars) would agree it is a wonderful collection. Apparently that is only part of his collection of cars!!! Then the old petrol bowsers and the padlock collection. Truly amazing and very lovely, down to earth people. And he still races Car 12!! And, listening gentlemen, his shed (what a shed!) is so clean and tidy.

Marion was good enough to put on tea and coffee for us, so we ate our morning tea under cover and dodged the showers of rain that kept coming over. We were actually quite lucky during the day, as we managed to dodge all but a few minor showers (we had 10ml at Tuckurimba and it apparently poured during the morning).

This is when I made my mistake - I asked the Invisible Man and his partner in crime, Grahame, to lead us over to Byron Bay Golf Club. We were to go via Macadamia Castle, Old Byron Bay Road and over to the Coast Road. Due to a lack of attention on someone’s (they can decide who) part we ended up on the new highway. Anyway we got off at Bangalow and drove over that way to the golf club. The traffic at Suffolk Park was very busy but we all finally managed to get in to the golf club and set ourselves up on the outdoor deck for lunch. By this time the rain had gone and it was a lovely sunny day. The view of the golf course, as well as the good food (the quality of which the chef agreed to) made for a very pleasant lunch outing. A nice end to what was, I hope for everyone, a very interesting and fun day.

Our thanks go to George Jensen who gave us Brian King’s contact details. These sort of collections make such interesting days.

Hope everyone enjoyed themselves and we shall see you on the next run in June. Sue DePaauw

From Ron and Julie Nowlan—can anyone identify this truck spotted on their travels? What make of vehicle is it?

Ron will enlighten us at the next meeting—I am not sure if he is providing a prize to anyone clever enough to

identify it!

And this one from Barry Granatelli............

On his way to the Masters in Georgia, Tiger Woods – who is sitting it out this year through injury –

drives his Mercedes-Benz into a petrol station in south Alabama, just on the edge of a picturesque

rural village.

The attendant at the pump greets him nonchalantly, completely unaware of who the golfing pro is.

"How y'all doin'?' says the attendant.

Tiger nods a quick, cursory "Hiya" and as he bends to wipe a fleck of guff from his white golfing

shoes, two tees fall out of his shirt pocket.

"What are they, son?" asks the attendant.

"They're called tees," replies Tiger.

"Well, what are they for?" inquires the Alabama man.

"They're for resting my balls on when I'm driving," says Tiger.

"Well, I'll be Goddamned," says this son of the Deep South,. "Those good ole boys at Mercedes think

of everything!"
