This river bed is in need of a clean up

By N Rathi Chithra

A r i v e r b e d i n Mogappair is bad-ly in need of a

clean-up project. Mounds of earth and wild growth of shrubs and bushes can be seen along the river bed at the junction of Kavimani Sa la i -Mogappai r Er i Scheme Sixth Main Road.

Old timers and local residents point out that desilting the river and clear-ing the bushes, mounds of earth and debris and level-ling its sides would go a long way in protecting the channel and prevent flood-ing during heavy rains. “The sight of an ignored river bed is hard to miss in

a locality that has otherwise seen growth and develop-ment in terms of number of houses and apartments that have come up alongside this channel,” says Im-manuel, a resident of Eri Scheme in Mogappair.

“If the authorities con-cerned could act on time and clear the unwanted growth of shrubs and level this place using JCBs, it will not only be an environmen-tally welcome initiative but also help in beautifying the area. We surely need some visual appeal in our neigh-bourhood,” he adds.

Some residents ex-pressed the apprehension that if the authorities ignore this then it could actually

pave the way for mindless dumping of debris along the water body’s course. “Any sight that presents a picture of neglect for months together is bound to serve as dumping spot for all and sundry. Though the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion itself has recently banned the practice of un-loading of construction debris along water courses, when an area is neglected for long then you really can’t keep an eye round-the-clock on unscrupulous elements who will discard all sorts of large scale wastes at the site,” points out Kamesh, a local resi-dent.

According to him, since

this water course is located in interior Mogappair it faces the risk of being ig-nored by authorities. “If you see the city’s water courses located in main localities there was a con-scious effort to uplift them. Even along the Cooum River path in the main ar-eas of the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation had reclaimed its bunds and beautified them by setting up gardens and parks at those places. Such parks can be seen in Egmore and Chindadripet. I don’t see any reason why the same cannot be replicated in right earnest by the civic body in our very own Mogappair neighbourhood,” he says.

Deadlineextended

The ministry of so-cial justice and empow-erment has set January 15 as deadline for re-ceiving nominations

for the national award for outstanding service in the field of preven-tion of alcoholism and substance abuse. The ministry has extended the deadline from De-cember 1 to January 15. The award will be given on June 26 next year.

Completed applica-tions must reach the joint secretary, depart-ment of social justice and empowerment, Room No 616, A Wing, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi 110001.

cross-section of r e s i d e n t s o f Mogappair East l iv ing in and

around the Bus Terminus, Pari Salai, Ori Salai, Church Street and Marai-malai Adigalar Salai is seeking extension of the morning opening hours of the E.B Salai Park, main-tained by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

The park, which was inaugurated a few months ago, is home to fitness enthusiasts and children from the neighbourhood surroundings. Presently the park falling under ju-risdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Zone 7 (Ward 92, Division 20) is open for morning walkers from 4.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. The visiting hours during evening time is be-tween 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

A section of the resi-dents in the locality, more

particularly women, are urging that the park be kept open at least till 10 in the morning. “Usually we housewives are occupied in the morning with daily chores and packing tiffin and lunch for our hus-bands and children. The household work keeps us occupied at least till 8.30 a.m or 9 a.m. everyday. It is only after sending our husbands to office and children to school that we get time to take care of our own fitness and health by going for a walk. But by the time we are free, the EB Salai Park is closed,” complains Sharmila, a housewife in sixth block Mogappair East.

“Most other parks be-longing to the Greater Chennai Corporation in and around Mogappair and Anna Nagar are kept open till 10 a.m. making it easy for women like us to talk late but brisk walk daily. For instance in Man-

gal Eri Park in Mogappair and Anna Nagar Tower Park as well as the Millen-nium Park on Park Road you can see many women going ahead with their morning constitutional after 9 a.m. The same facil-ity must be extended in the EB Salai Park also for the benefit of housewives like us who prefer a morning walk to an evening stroll,” says Seetha, a resident of an apartment on the Elec-tricity Board Road.

Residents say their de-mand should not be too difficult to fulfil. “The caretaker of the EB Salai Park actually resides inside the park premises itself. Therefore he may not be put to any difficulty in keeping the park open for another hour in the morn-ing. I hope the Greater Chennai Corporation will formally extend the visi-tors’ timing in the morning in the park,” adds Seetha’s friend Ramaniammal.

Eating one to two servings of salad with spinach, lettuce and kale daily may keep your brain 11 years young-er as well as prevent dementia, accord-ing to a study.

The study found that people who ate at least one serving of green, leafy vegetables a day had a slower rate of decline on tests of memory and think-ing skills than people who never or rarely ate these vegetables.

In people who ate the most of green, leafy vegetables brain age-ing slowed by 11 years.

“Adding a daily serving of green, leafy vegetables to your diet may be a simple way to foster your brain health,” says a study.

“Projections show sharp increases in the percentage of people with de-mentia as the oldest age groups con-tinue to grow in number, so effective strategies to prevent dementia are critical,” it added.

The study, published in the journal Neurology, involved 960 people with an average age of 81 who did not have dementia and were followed for an average of 4.7 years.

Over 10 years of follow-up, the rate of decline for those who ate the most leafy greens was slower by 0.05 stan-dardised units per year than the rate for those who ate the least leafy greens. This difference was equivalent

to being 11 years younger in age.The results remained valid after

accounting for other factors that could affect brain health such as smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, education level and amount

of physical and cognitive activities, the researchers said.

A drug commonly pre-scribed for helping people quit smoking may in-crease the risk of develop-ing cardiovascular event, according to new re-search

While varenicline has been known to triple the chances of a person quit-ting smoking, patients who were prescribed the drug were 34 per cent more likely to have an emergency department visit or hospitalisation for a cardiovascular event while taking the drug.

The cardiovascular events included heart at-tack, stroke, arrhythmias,

unstable angina and pe-ripheral vascular disease among others.

Among those who had not previously experi-enced a cardiovascular event, the increased inci-dence was 12 per cent.

In addition, vareni-cline also raised the risk o f neuropsychia t r i c events including depres-sion, anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, insomnia and self-harm, the find-ings showed.

“Quitting smoking greatly reduces a person’s chances of developing heart disease and cancer and has many other

health benefits,” said a Professor at the Univer-sity of Toronto.

“Our findings should not be used to suggest people not take vareni-cline. It should be used to help people make an in-formed decision about whether they should take varenicline based on ac-curate information about its risks as well as its benefits,” he added.

Moreover, physicians should also monitor pa-tients taking varenicline more closely to catch adverse events early if they do occur, the study suggested.

For the study, pub-lished in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medi-cine, the team analysed the medical records of 56,851 new users of var-enicline. Source: Internet

A cross-section of r e s i d e n t s i n Mogappair, Anna

Nagar, Ambattur and its neighbourhoods feel that the services at the e-Sevai centres are good but more needs to be done to make it a real virtual experience.

The State Government had as per the National e-Governance plan set up Common Service Centres – more popularly known by the brand name e-Sevai Maiyam – across Tamil Nadu. These centres were also opened in Mogappair, Anna Nagar and Ambat-tur. At these e-Sevai Mai-

yams people can avail of over 60 services pertaining to various departments such as Revenue, Civil Supplies and Social Wel-fare.

In the Mogappa i r neighbourhood three e-Sevai Maiyams (other than those located in pri-vate schools) are function-ing. They are located in Seventh Street, Eri Scheme Road; 10th Block, Mogap-pair East; and Corpora-tion School campus in Padikuppam and all of them are run by the Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable Televi-sion Corporation (TAC-TV).

Residents who are in

need of various govern-ment services go to these centres to apply for vari-ous documents. A staff at the e-Sevai Maiyam would upload the scanned copy of all required original documents and apply for those certificates online for which a nominal fee is collected and a receipt is issued. Later they will get a SMS on their registered mobile phone number from the Department con-cerned when their docu-ment is ready after which they can go to the e-Sevai Maiyam and take a print-out of the same.

"People approach us predominantly to get na-tivity certificate, birth cer-tificate, death certificate, community certificate or family income certificate. This is a corruption free process and also easy," said a staff at one of the e-Sevai Maiyams request-ing anonymity as rules do not permit them to be quoted.

However, residents say the entire process is not seamless in the virtual world and the human ele-ment is involved at every stage. "After registering for a document online at these

centres, one has to again go to the same centre to get a printout of the com-munity certificate. We cannot download it from internet centres or at any other e-Sevai Maiyam. This defeats the purpose of digital governance. Ide-ally they should have a process where we can simply download a docu-ment once it is issued by any official. Here only af-ter getting the first printout from the same centre where the documents were uploaded we can take subsequent copies online by entering a particular code. Instead the code should be sent by SMS to us," said Ramadurai, a resident of Padikuppam Road.

Travellers will now be able to board appbased taxis with ease as Airports Authority of india (AAi) has assigned pick-up points for Ola and Uber cabs at Chennai airport. Boards have been put up at pick up spots which are closer to the terminals. A separate lane and a parking space have also been alloted for the cars to prevent them from en-croaching into the zone used by prepaid taxis and a licensed private taxi operator.
