Some common infections you may already know are; Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF INFECTIONS; LOCALIZED- an infection that is only found in one part of

the body and symptoms are only seen at that one part of the body.

SYSTEMIC-an infection that affects an entire body part or a whole body system and the person will have different

types of symptoms such as; Fever Chills

Confusion Feeling tired

Nausea Vomiting

One way that harmful germs travel is by direct contact with body fluids where

these germs live, such as; Blood

Sputum Pus or wound fluid

Saliva Stool Vomit

Direct contact includes; Needle sticks

Contact with skin that has a rash, cuts, or scratches

Splash or spray to mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and/or mouth

INDIRECT CONTACT

Another way for a person to get infected by body fluids is by indirect contact.

Indirect contact means that the harmful germs were spread by an object that had

touched body fluids from an infected person, such as; Dirty needles

Soiled bandages

Droplet spread-is another form of indirect contact. Droplets spread through;

& Through eating or drinking food or water that is infected with

harmful germs.

INFECTION PREVENTION

Standard Precautions are the basic tasks that

healthcare workers must do when caring for EACH and EVERY RESIDENT, in order to prevent and control the

spread of infection.

Standard Precautions mean that you must treat ALL body fluids, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes as if they were infected.

STANDARD PRECAUTION RULES THAT YOU SHOULD FOLLOW ;

Wash hands Wear gloves

Wear disposable gown, goggles and/or face shield If you get blood or bodily fluids on you wash

IMMEDIATELY! Wear gloves and use caution when handling sharps

Clean ALL surfaces Place ALL contaminated trash into BIOHAZARD bags

and receptacles Place soiled linen in designated containers

Clean and disinfect ALL multi-use resident care equipment
