Overview :

Indian Railways has more than 64,015 kilomt.

(39,777 mi) of track and 7,083 stations. It has the

world's fourth largest railway network after those

of the United States, Russia and China. The

railways traverse the length and breadth of the

country and carry over 25 million passengers and

2.5 million tons of freight daily.R

ailways werefirst introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year

of India's independence, there were forty-two rail

systems.

Rail Budget 2011-12 Mamata focuses on

´common peopleµ It would be friendly to theeconomy, people and environment.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presented the

2011 Railway Budget concerns over poor

progress of large projects and the financial health

of the world's second largest rail network under

one management.

No increase in fares.

Earnings for 2010-11 set to exceed Rs.1 lakh

crore.

Working expenditure during 2011-12 estimated at

Rs.87,000 crore.

Outlay of Rs.57,630 crore for 2011-12, the

highest investment in one year. Rs.10,000 crore to be raised through railway

bonds .

and doubling of tracks and laying of

1000 km of railway tracks. There willalso be an increase in the number of

importance to safety and securityissues like improving the signaling

system, train protection warning system

(TPWS) and installing safety relatedtechnology like Anti-collision devices

Special ounces for railway employees.The entire railway cadre will berestuctured to ensure the promotion of

employees. Also, the scholarshipschemes for children of railwayemployees has been raised to Rs1200. Banerjee also announced to

induct 16000 ex-servicemen fromMarch 2011. And 20 hostels forchildren of railway employees.

The budget has incorporated a few

concessions such as reducing the eligibility

age of senior women citizens from 60 to 58years and the fare concession for men

above 60 from 30 to 40 per cent.

Talking to media persons here, Badal said that

while presenting the Railway budget Benerjee

should have known that³If we go by the proposals of the Railway budget

presented, it seems that Punjab does not exist

on the map of India, as she has not allocated a

single penny, train, a railway track for thegranary of the country that is feeding the whole

nation,´ he said.

criticized strongly by non-UPA state

governments.

Banjerjee is being accused of being partial,

and directing all the attention towards her

home state, West Bengal.

MANY HAD predicted the rail budget 2011 to beWest Bengal centric due to assembly polls in West

Bengal. But while catering to her home state andconsiderations of national politics, the budget didnot address the long pending demands from thehilly state of Uttarakhand - that too when several

proposals and appeals were made to the railwayminister, Mamata Banerjee, by various politicaland social organisations.
