Chosen to celebrate the independence o the UnitedStates on 4 July 1776, praised by Shakespeare in hisplays and admired by monarchs, princes, generals andexplorers, Madeira wine is certainly a treasure.

It is appreciated all over the world and has more than

ve centuries o history. This ‘nectar o the gods’ is one

o Madeira’s nest achievements.

Just think about the Madeirans’ constructive spirit over thecenturies, visible in the hand-tilled vineyards on small plotso land called poios (terraces), sometimes clinging to themountain sides.

There are more than 30 Madeira wine grape varieties, though the best are Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.

The most well-known dry wine is made rom Sercial

grapes. This pale, strongly perumed wine makes anideal aperiti. Verdelho leads the medium dry wines. It isgolden, delicate and quite perumed and is the best one

or drinking with meals. Boal is medium sweet, smooth, velvety, noble and dark gold in colour and goes well withroast meat or dessert. Between meals or with dessert, ewcan resist a Malvasia, a sweet, red, ull-bodied, intenselyperumed wine.

Connaisseurs o this ‘art’ should come to Madeira in

September to see and participate in the Madeira grapeharvest and its estival, a tribute to this age-old productthat is recognised worldwide.

Savour a glass and drink a toast to lie with

Madeira wine…
