MADEIRA PIANOFESTAfter the Madeira Liszt Festival (2011) and the Madeira
Rachmaninov Festival (2014), the “Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira” presents on November, another unique event in the Region’s musical panorama: a piano festival, featuring eight pianists from seven different countries (Croatia, Hungary, England, Ireland, Japan, Portugal and Ukraine), in various combinations, some of which rarely listened to: piano four- hands, piano six-hands, two pianos and piano eight-hands with two pianos.
The Steinway’s notes, owned by Funchal City Hall, and the Bechstein sounds, property of the Regional Department of Culture, will merge in exquisite tones, as a result of a stylistic diversified, attractive and accessible programme.
From charming and humorous compositions of great expressive and artistic impact, of virtuosity and brilliance to orchestral sound effects, the Madeira Pianofest aims to show how the piano’s great capacity has awaken the creative fantasy of composers from different time periods, resulting in the vast existing repertoire.

Mobility Colloquium - “The boundaries of Mobility”
On November 12 and 13, the Study Centre for Atlantic History (CEHA), in Funchal, hosts a Colloquium on Mobility. Professor Maria Beatriz Rocha-Trindade opens this year’s debate, also marking the beginning of a new project - The Ninth Island. The CEHA aims to register the Madeiran’s mobility history since the 15th century till today, and reflect on how it has been built through the five continents.
The event will approach issues like: borders, whether natural, real or imaginary; it will reflected on the new emerging concepts of (in)equality between migrants and natives, on the effects of (in)constant Mobility in our geographical, social, cultural and literary reality. Cross-border memories, writings, unpublished records from travelers, the longing (saudade) and the island(s), are other related aspects that will be under debate in this colloquium.

“The Danish Knight”The theatre company Associação Companhia
Contigo Teatro presents, between November 25 and 28, the play “O Cavaleiro da Dinamarca” - The Danish Knight, inspired by the children’s book of
the Portuguese writer and storyteller Sophia de Mello Breyner.A play about a knight, who, on Christmas Eve, announces to his family
an unexpected decision: to go on pilgrimage to the Holy places and spend Christmas evening in the place where Baby Jesus was born.
Two years later, after going through various difficulties, adventures, and overcoming winter storms, he manages to reach his forest, where he sees a light within a short distance. The Knight follows the light and finds his house. The family had lit their enormous pine tree, guiding him back home.
It’s said that this is why, still today, pine trees are decorated at Christmas time.
An inner journey of personal growth, where are emphasized the human, cultural and artistic values of the play’s character, also seeking to contribute to a healthy reflection from the audience about what’s to be a human being.

Quinta das Cruzes is one of the largest “quintas“ with historic tradition in the bay of funchal, linked to the family of the first donatory Captain, who have worked in the late fifteenth, early sixteenth century. A small building, started by joao goncalves Zarco (1425-1467?), was increased by his son João Gonçalves da Câmara. This house remained in the family until the mid seventeenth century, moving through marriage alliances, to the Lomelino family until the late nineteenth century.
