with rock, alternative andindie music. It started as a music newspaper, and gradually moved towarda magazine format during the 1980s and 90s, changing from newsprint in 1998. It was the first

British paper to include a singles chart, in 14 November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the

    ouble page spread

    >the only image on the page is of Florence so the reader can identify that the

info/interview on this page is about her. With the black dress and shoes she is

wearing it stands vigorously against the white to grey shaded background and

makes Florence become the centre of attention. It also contrasts with her palecomplexion again and her vivid red hair. The black dress code links with the

now black text used following a colour scheme with black and white and also

the red of the draped American flag I will mention soon.

    >The text used is placed to the right of the page over the whitest part of the

background so that the text in black stands out and is easy to read for the

    readers.

    >The title of the contents pager is again following the colour scheme of red,

white and black and is in big blocky characters so that it stands out and the

readers can easily identify and realise what this page is about to offer which is

what is in NME this week.

    >The list of what is on each page is neatly arranged down the left hand side of

the pager with the page number next to them. They are in a simple font so that

it has an ease of read for the buyer of the magazine and it is in red which is

backed up white a white background so that it stands of the page and again

makes it easier to read whilst following the colour scheme. At the top is a

smaller title but again in bold and black to stand out.

    > The picture used on the page is centralised so that it is a key part of the page,we can see that it is a picture taken at one of the musicians performances in

this case it is kasabian the colours in the picture are dark blacks and the

lights used are of red this could be a coincidental link to the colour scheme or

it could be intentional, only the publisher knows

    >Underneath then picture is a sub title again in simple bold black font and is

central again, stands out for the audience and gives a brief idea about what the

    text below it is about.

    >On the right of a page is another contents, this one I believe is for big events

or big news and it gives a little bit of text underneath each heading to tell the

    reader(s) what it is about.

    > At the bottom of the contents page is an advert telling people how they can

subscribe to the NME magazine and save money trying to get more people to

regularly read there magazine therefore possibly increasing their circulation

    and readership

    >this whole page is column designed into three columns one for index then

central story and then another index.

    >The title of this page is in big white text and located at the top of the page it is

in a simple font and easy to read. It is covered slightly by the image use but this

means that the company is confident with their brand and that they will know

people will still know what magazine it is especially will loyal and regular

    buyers.

    > At the top left of the page it advertises that in the magazine it has a free CD

for buyers/ readers of the magazine this is put in the top left as usually that is

where our eyes start reading first hence it can make buying the magazine more

tempting as you are getting more than just the magazine to read. It is in fairly

large text so it is noticeable and is in black text supported by a green

background for it to stand out even more.

    >The image used in the picture is of the band kings of Leon It has been

printed in black and white which follows the colour scheme being used which

consists of Black, White and Green. The image is large and covers a good 90%

of the page. It has all of the band members looking directly out of the

magazine towards the reader again like the previous magazine (NME) making a

more personal connection with the image.

    >Over lapping the image in the centre horizontally is the name of the bandbeing displayed. It has been printed in bright green and large bold text. This

has probably been done to show the significance of this band and also to show

the reader what the main headlining story in the magazine is going to be

about. Again the text follows the colour scheme. Then text has been placed

just below all of the band members heads with the title of the magazine above

their heads this creates a sort of horizontal border around them to give a nice

aesthetic look to the reader but also draw attention to them.

    > Above the Kings of Leon text there is a Buzzword which is in a complete

different colour (Red and White) to the colour scheme used therefore it

generates the reader to look towards it as it seems to be out of place on the

page, it makes the reader believe that this magazine has special contents

inside that they need to read about.

    > The text located at the bottom left and bottom right of the page can be seen

as columned and again is in simple white and green text.

    >At the top of the page there name is shown in the centre in bold simplistic

font, this font is easy to read and stands out clearly and neatly on the page.

    >The colours used on the page are very simple and consists of, Black, Gold and

Grey, because this magazine is aimed at older readers the colour schemeworks as it is not to bright or vibrant. The stories within the magazine are easily

seen to be separated by bold black text and run in a column at the left of the

    page.

    >Below the list of stories is another main cover story which has been separated

by gold lines. This separation shows that this story is more important or that it

is bigger than the others. It also contains more text about it underneath giving

the reader more detail about it.

    >At the bottom of the page is a pulled quote and has been printed in a

different font to stand out from the rest.

    >The image used is placed at the right of the page and can be seen as it in a

column as well, the outfit the musician is wearing contrasts with the rest of the

page and makes him stand out and the centre of attention on the page.

    >The image has been taken at a head shot angle, and they have the musicianlook straight into the camera and to the readers this creates an involvement

with the readers and can cause them to want to read further.

    >The issue number displayed gives the reader the knowledge of which number

issue they are reading, it can also show how successful the magazine is if they

    are on their 193rd

    issue.

    Double page spread

    >The logo on this double page spread is placed overlapping the image used, its

in an orange box and has the effect as if the letters have been cut out of the

box revealing the person in the image behind. The font is still the same as used

on the front page and contents page. The brand is large and easily noticeableto readers.

    >The image used behind the text of the musician is in black and white which

goes with the simplistic colour scheme being used. The image is of a medium

shot and is at our eye level as if we were looking at the musician ourselves. The

    musician is also seen to be looking straight at the camera and to the readers;

again this technique is used to create a more personal sense to the magazine.

    12/19

    >The title above the text is in shades of orange and white this again is linked to

the image used and the colour scheme it also contrasts well with the

background block colour which consists of a dark grey. The title uses the same

font that is used for the logo or wording of MOJO which gives it a nice flow

and makes it look aesthetically pleasing to look at. The first word which is

BEST is in the largest font size so when readers turn to this page they

instantly see this word, it could be seen as a buzz word to draw attention to

    the story below.

    >The text for the story is laid out in two columns and they are both the same

length which gives a nice parallel and neat look to the page. The text is in white

which is simplistic like the rest of the page but also stands out again against the

    bold dark grey background.

Qis apopular music magazine published monthly in the United

Kingdom.FoundersMark Ellen andDavid Hepworth were dismayed by the

music press of the time, which they felt was ignoring a generation of older

music buyers who were buying CDs then still a new technology. Qwas first

published by theEMAP media group in October 1986, setting itself apart from

much of the other music press with monthly production and higher standards

ofphotography andprinting. In the early years, the magazine was sub-titled

"The modern guide to music and more". Originally it was to be called Cue(as in

the sense of cueing a record, ready to play), but the name was changed so that

it wouldn't be mistaken for asnooker magazine. Another reason, cited in Q's

200th edition, is that a single-letter title would be more prominent on

newsstands. In January 2008 EMAP sold its consumer magazine titles, including Q, to theBauer Media Group.

    >At the top of the page in white simple text is text stating Theuks biggest

music magazine it is printed in capital letters and is trying to state to the

readers that this magazine is the best there is out of them all.

    >in the top left of the page is there logo which takes up about 1/8 of the pageits large and bold with its red background and large white Q that stands out

and to state its dominance among other magazines probably displayed on the

shelf trying to draw attention to theirs.

    >The image used is used in the background and covers all of the page the black

hair, red lipstick and pale complexion of her skin matches the colour scheme

being used and gives it a fluent aesthetic look to the page and is pleasing for

the reader to look at. The eyes of the musician are directly connecting with thereaders drawing them in and a false sense of involvement with the magazine.

The image has focused on Sheryl in the foreground and made the background

out of focus creating a blur round the edges with the motion of the rain drops

blurred this draws attention to her and the centre of the page where the image

    is crisp and in focus.

    >The text being used at the left and right of the page is in white and red. Again

linking to the colour scheme being used all throughout the front page. It is ontop of dark colours so it stands out and is bold and easy to read.

    > At the bottom of the page again in the white and red is Sheryl cole rocks

the word rocks is the largest and in bright vibrant red and in simplistic font, it

    os the second biggest thing

to stand out on the page the

    logo being the first. Its

placed at the bottom of thepage in my opinion this is

odne so that it is the last

word read on the page and is

fresh in the mind and stays

there for the reader to dwell

on what it is stating about

    Sheryl Cole.

    >At the top left of the page the logo again is displayed in the corner this time a

little smaller but still as it appears on the front cover.

    > The contents pages headings are laid out in a column going down the left

hand side of the page and they are in simplistic black text supported by a white

background so that it stands out on the page and again easier for readers to

    read.

    > the colour scheme used on the page again is mainly off red black and white,

we have the black text with the white background and vice versa in places and

we have strips of red on parts of the page along with the red hair of the

    musician in the picture (Adele).

    > The picture used is fairly large and covers about of the page the musicians

(Adeles) hair is red and her skin is of pale complexion and the clothes she is

wearing are black again this is going along with the colour scheme and makes

the page flow nicely with a pleasing aesthetic look. They have also made

Adele look directly down the camera even though she is facing away from it

this gives a strong bond between the reader and magazine as if the musician is

    breaking the fourth wall.

    > The whole page can be seen as set out in two columns, one for the contents

headings on the left and another larger one taking up 2/3rds of the page which

consists of the main large image and the smaller image and contents below it.

Again all still following the colour scheme and using the same font. Also the

Red and white Q is used again a swell this time slightly smaller.

    Double page spread

This double page spread is in a different layout compared to the other

two magazines analysed. This double page spread appears to be two

different pages but because the text and content relates and is about

the musician in the picture on the right page it is in fact a double page

    spread.

At the top of the left page is the name of the musician in fairly bold

    writing and in black.

The text in the article is displayed in three columns and covers a good

majority of the page; this is again in simple black font.

Over laying the text is a big C in red and is slightly transparent so thatthe text behind can still is read by the reader. This large C adds a
