ISLANDER
To The Islander:On Saturday, May 17, I ob-
served the Sanibel Boy Scouts ofTroup 88 picking up the beer cansand other types of litter layingalong the roadside.
I feel that they should be con-gratulated from the bottom of ourhearts, because they didn't litterour roadsides, and yet they arewilling to devote their time andefforts to beautify our Island byremoving beer cans and othertrash which WE threw out of ourcar windows.
The men who drove t h e i rtrucks and offered their time inhelping with this project shouldalso be thanked.
What can every islander do tohelp this situation? The mainthing we can do is to throw ourtrash out at home, like civil-ized human beings. Then our i s -land won't be an eye-sore to thetourists (whom most of us makeour living from) and also wewill appreciate our beautiful " I s -land Paradise" even more thanwe do now.
/ s / Thomas E. Holtz
To The Islander:
If what Priscilla Murphy saysregarding the non-availability ofGulf frontage is true, why are"For Sale" signs still standingon Gulf front property? And theyhave been there for months andmonths!

SOME TIPS ON ANCHORING
There is much more to an-choring a boat than just droppingthe "hook."
Properly used, an anchor willhold a pleasure boat secure a-gainst all but the strongest cur-rent or wind. Used incorrectly, though, an anchor is just thatmuch more weight for the boatto lug along as it drifts down-stream.
There are many types of an-chors on the market today; theboater's choice depends largelyon where it will be used.
A Yachtsman anchor, for ex-ample, will hold well in grass, sand and rocks, but not mud. AMushroom type, on the otherhand, will work well in mud, butnot so well on other bottoms „
Other common types of an-chors in use today include theSpade Palm (mud, sand andgrass), Grapnel (rocks), Navy(mud) and Danforth (all types ofbottoms.)
Selecting the spot to anchoris important, too, reports theJohnson Motors News Bureau,Make sure the water Is deepenough to allow the boat to riseand fall on the waves withoutgrounding.
In tidal waters, check thetables to make sure your boatwon't be left high and dry at lowtide. Or too far at sea duringhigh tide.
It's also a good idea to keepan eye on the wind, and try toanchor in a protected area. Ifpossible, anchor out of the cur-rent and in the lee side of thewind.
Once you've picked a spot, swing your boat into the windand run a bit past where you'dlike the boat to end up.
Ease the anchor overboard(never throw it—tangled line hasa way of causing all sorts ofheadaches) and allow it to set, then let the boat drift back aboutfive or six times the water depth.
Finally, wrap the anchor linearound a cleat and motor back-wards a short ways to hel securethe anchoro That's all there is toit.
If strong winds are expected,it's always a good idea to use atleast twos and sometimes three, anchors: one from the bow, onefrom the stern and one (if neces-sary) from midships.
When weighing anchor, justmotor ahead slowly, pulling inthe anchor line, until you're di-rectly over the anchor — thenpull the anchor free.

GARDENING NEWS
Many bulbs produce n e x tyear 's flowers at this time ofyear. Amaryllis is no exception, says the Florida Nurserymenand Growers Association.
Amaryllis bulbs are quitepeculiar in that they pull them-selves into the ground over aperiod of timeo A bulb that is toodeep will fail to bloomo A bulbthat is over fertilized with nitro-gen many fail to set flowers. Now is the time to apply an ap-plication of a 4-8-8 to your am-aryllis bulbs to produce flowersfor next year. Bulbs that a r elifted at this time will also fail tobloom.
Amaryllis are subject to adisease called red leaf blotch.A temporary control for thisdisease is a spray of neutralcopper at two-week intervals.Complete control can be effect-ed by lifting the bulbs in the falland treating them in formalde-hyde.
If you are a fall gardener andlet your garden rest during thesummer months, it is advisableto plant a small cover crop tohelp enrich the soil. You can usea cover crop of field peas. Thisnot only enriches the soil, but italso provides a vegetable for yourdinner table. Another cover cropthat has been used not only byhome gardeners but also by com-mercial people is hairy indigo. This is a vigorous growing plantof the legume family. The shadingfrom this plant will help to pre-vent weed encroachment in yourgarden during the summer.
Chrysanthemums have pro-duced enough growth for propa-gation purposes. Remove the topfour inches of the plant and makenew cuttings. These cuttiags willroot if inserted in peat and sandin approximately 3 weeks. Afterthe cuttings have rooted, set themin place for a new bed of flowersfor this fall.
Homeowners with c i t r u strees should watch for waterspots on the trunks of their t rees .These use extra fertilizer andshould be removed. W a t e rsprouts are angular, succulentgrowth with many thorns. Youneed not cut them off, just breakthem off.

I WANT MY BOY TO HAVE ALL THE ADVANTAGES I CAN GIVE HIM
Such as learning the value of money, cooperation and work by earninghis own allowance; doing whatever he can to help his family.
Such as getting good grades in school—getting them because he wantsto and is eager to learn about the world, and because he knows howimportant knowledge is to his future.
Such as being proud to be clean and neat and decent.Such as addressing his friends and his parents with respect and con-
sideration.Such as standing up and standing proud when his country's flag goes by.Such as having the courage to say "no" to his friends when he knows
they are wrong.Such as respecting the value of any human being, no matter what the
race or regligion or economic status.Such as knowing how to give as well as how to take.Such as knowing to earn his own way in the world and knowing he has
to prepare for it by hard work, hard study, and sacrificing some ofthe pleasures and ease his friends may get from too-indulgentparents.
These are the advantages I want my boy to have, because these are thethings which wiE make him self-respecting and self-reliant and suc-cessful. And THAT is the happiness I want him to have.
