Intro Hello World! My name is Maja. I am a piano teacher from Serbia. If you want, you may find out more about me . Lesson This is my assignment for week 3 of Coursera course Introduction to Music Production. My lesson is about: Categories of Effects There are 3 categories of audio effects, and since we are in a digital domain, in our DAW, we might call this: Digital Signal Processing or a DSP. These three categories are generally related to three of the sound properties. Additionally, I will refer to these effects on my digital piano Yamaha P120. First category is dynamic effects and they are related to amplitude. Dynamic effects automatically control volume based on the material over time. For these effects, there are the following plugins: compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates. On my digital piano, there is a slider for Master Volume: minmax. Of course, nuanced dynamics is achieved in the first place by key pressure. Second category is delay effects and these are related to the propagation principle of sound, adding slight delays to the signal which tends to represent spaces that you're inside. Plugins in this category are: reverbs, delays, phasers, flangers and choruses. They provide us a sense of the space, impression that the sound is produced in a large or small room, or on a stage. On my digital piano Reverb settings are: Room, Hall 1, Hall 2, Stage, as well as: Chorus, Phaser, Tremolo, Delay. Maja Dakic-Brkovic - Week 3 Assignment for #impmooc, March, 2013 Page 1/3

Intro

Hello World! My name is Maja. I am a piano teacher from Serbia.If you want, you may find out more about me.

Lesson

This is my assignment for week 3 of Coursera course Introduction to Music Production.My lesson is about:

Categories of Effects

There are 3 categories of audio effects, and since we are in a digital domain, in our DAW, we                                   might call this: Digital Signal Processing or a DSP. These three categories are generally related                           to three of the sound properties.Additionally, I will refer to these effects on my digital piano Yamaha P120.

Third category is filter effect to control the timbre of the sound. Just to remind you that the                                 timbre is that quality of sound which allows you to distinguish, for example, your mother's voice                             from your father's, or sound of a violin from a flute. Plugins in this category are:high pass filter, low pass filter, band pass filter, EQs  such as: parametric filters, and graphicequalizers.On my digital piano, there is a slider for Brilliance: mellowbright.

This is my digital piano. You may see the mentioned sliders and buttons.

Related colors are:

blue: dynamic effects (volume)green: delay effects (reverb)red: filter effects (timbre)

Knowledge about these categories of effects is related to sound processing, when setting up the                           signal flow. If we want to process several instruments as a single unit, actually to group them,                               we will have to make a submix in our mixing board. We will route all different instrumental tracks                                 to a single track that we can then process at once, as a unit. By using only one plugin on that                                       one track, we save a lot of processing.

With this I will end my lesson. Hope you like it.

Selfreflections

This time, I decided to make it short and simple to save your time. I really appreciate when I get                                     such works from my peers to assess. Hope you will like it, too. These information were                                 not new to me. I enjoyed making some color text formating some text effects , and adding more                                   info related to my digital piano, which I love!

Thank you for taking your time to go through my presentation. I am eager to read your                               comments. You are welcome to contact me on my Twitter: @maja_prolece

Bye, bye!
