MABLETHORPE’S CARNIVAL QUEENS

Our front cover photo was taken of Chelsea at one of her first engagements as the Mablethorpe Carnival Queen 2019 ~ 20 … the most enjoyable Teddy Bear’s Picnic when well nigh 20 bears made their appearance… plus the odd dinosaur. At the event Chelsea escaped for a moment or two perhaps, one might say, reverting to a former life… for in the Carnival Parade of 2018 she appeared as a mermaid.

Pictures of the glittering coronation ceremony appear on our back page.

It was last year’s Queen Charlotte [PHOTO ABOVE] who performed the ceremony & it is fitting here to pay tribute to Charlotte for her full year of activity.

As well as attending numerous events ~ many of them fund raising ones ~ Charlotte has been busy studying… with outstanding success. She achieved a distinction in Performing Arts level 3, passed with distinction LCM grade 6 pop exam, was a finalist in the Lincolnshire Young Musician of the Year competition, & took part in a 4.5 mile Family Charity Walk.

We congratulate her on these successes, & thank her & all her family for supporting the Carnival with such enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, after much deliberation, it has been decided that the winner of the name of the teddy bear mascot competition is Karen Bates-Senior [RIGHT]. Karen is an author of the books, available via Amazon, “Making it in France”, “Faking it in France” …. & “Welcome to the Pink Ladies Club” a frank & heartfelt memoir of how she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a routine screening. In the book Karen shares her story giving tips on surviving chemotherapy

& reconstruction surgery. And Karen received her initial treatment in Barnstaple’s Seamoor unit: Hence the winning name!

On this same subject Suzanne Lowes [BELOW] has contacted us asking to publicize the support group which meets at the Marisco

Responding to a number of recent reports of damager to beach huts Sergeant Cherry Kelly & her team decided to take the bull by the horns & show how chalets could be made more vandal proof. The Town Council decided to give the police the use of one of their huts above Queen’s Park…

… & then several local businesses chipped in to help furnish the hut … so it is now decorated, for instance, with inflammable paint. The hut also serves as a contact base for the police during the holiday season where help can be offered with lost children & with other problems.

All ~ especially chalet-owners ~ are welcome to drop in & meet the team!

Klara Hesling [LEFT] started coming for holidays here, as so many of us do, because it is ideal for dog walking… & offers safe places to swim: super for herself & her family: she has a son & twin daughters. Having gained twenty years experience in the field of regulated financial & legal advice (from working, for example, with Halifax & HSBC), Klara decided to set up her own business helping individuals plan for their futures, draft a will, or deal with problems that cross national boundaries: See her advert on the next page!

Bill [LEFT] is played by Rob Lowe (“West Wing” etc), while his Deputy [RIGHT], over-looked, presumably due to racial prejudice, is Nottingham’s Anjli Mohindra (“Dark Heart” & “Bodyguard”).

The Police & Crime Commissioner is Tony Pitts (“Line of Duty”), & the local journalist is Angela Griffin (“Coronation Street” & “Waterloo Road”).

The MABO MINIATURE MANIACS are pictured here staging their superb summer exhibition entrancing all who visited it.

They meet every Tuesday at the Coastal Centre on Tuesdays between 2 & 4pm… Although primarily a dolls' house club, anyone is welcomed who has an interest in crafts: model-making, including railways, war-games & dioramas It costs only £2 a session & that includes tea & biscuits! Info: 07593 233 659

Carl continues… The Goodings are a long established Mablethorpe business family, & Graham was always keen to be involved in anything that would promote & improve the town. He was, for instance, a great supporter of the Town’s Carnival & was always ready to lend a hand back in the event’s 1980s heyday. Graham & I were also prime movers in the formation of the Mablethorpe Tourist Association around this time.

Many people will remember Graham during his time working for Conyers DIY where he must have supplied half of the new kitchens in Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea: but it is as a town, district, & county councillor that he should best be remembered, when he worked tirelessly for the area always striving to make our community a better place for its visitors & residents alike.

A last link with the Town Councillors of a different era, Graham will be sorely missed.

Contributions in memory of Graham may be made via the Co-op Funeral Service (473 440)

to the PSP Association which supports & seeks a cure for those living with Progressive

Supranuclear Palsy, the neurological condition caused by the premature loss of

nerve cells in certain parts of the brain.

A WEALTH OF TRIBUTES TO

GRAHAM GOODING

Graham Gooding died tragically on 14th July & his funeral took place at St Mary’s Church on Friday 26th July. Born in 1954, Graham was a member of a family that has been part of the fabric of Mablethorpe over many years. He is pictured here with his vibrant wife Janette who was a constant support to him both during the years when he worked so hard for our community & during the latter years when his health so sadly declined. It was typical of her to request no flowers at the funeral but instead the wearing of bright colours to celebrate Graham’s life.

He served as Mayor twice, in 1989/90 & in 2004/05. Among the many tributes paid to him, was this one coming from our current Mayor Cllr Carl Tebbutt:

I have had the honour of knowing Graham Gooding as both a friend & a fellow councillor for many years. I first met him soon after moving to Mablethorpe in the 1970s when he could usually be found during the summer months in the pay-box of the family’s waltzer ride on the amusement park. We used to meet up with many of the staff after the park closed to play football on the beach in the evening.

TWO NEW VENUES WELL WORTH VISITING

First in Spanish City, here’s a great up-graded Fish & Chip Restaurant, run by Mr G at the foot of the pullover as a companion food outlet to the Café on the pullover’s top.

Then in Fitzwilliam Street there’s a 1960s themed ROCK’N’ROLL CAFÉ where you can enjoy a nostalgic meal or a quick cuppa in company with, no less, Elvis & Marilyn Monroe.

Will we see the ghost of Peter Fonda parking his bike outside?

This move was supported by the police who are able, on hearing of trouble can contact the controls in Boston & both record incidents & be guided to where help is needed.

Other positive steps towards making our community safer include the reviving of the PUBWATCH scheme… an initiative which was pushed forward after concerns raised by licensees on the Coastal Community Team’s agenda session led to meetings facilitated by the MABLETHORPE AREA PARTNERSHIP between the police, officers of the BID (Business Improvement District) & licensees of the Book in Hand, Carousel, the Dunes, Holivans, Jesters, the Louth, Remingtons, & Social 22.

The same meeting welcomed the moves towards the SHOPWATCH strategy (giving radio links between our shop-keepers, & the employment by the BID of two Street Rangers, there to give daytime assistance in our community.

The meeting also recommended the employment of Night Rangers who would be on duty after 10pm in Mablethorpe & Sutton-on-Sea liaising with the police team ~ who are now having to cover a wide area along our coast & inland as far as Alford . This proposal is now being put to the Town Council seeking its backing in taking it forward.

Although many reported that it did not seem worth reporting incidents because nothing much was done when they did, it was emphasized that the lack of reporting of incidents meant that statistics showed there was little cause for concern & therefore no need for extra police to be deployed here. MORAL: DIAL 101 & REPORT YOUR CONCERNS!

After much deliberation ~ & by the narrowest of margins ~ the Town Council has decided that it will not opt out of the ELDC system but trust that it will now work efficiently… and that it will be added to with extra units installed at points where extra monitoring is thought to be needed.
