MYSTERY PHOTO FROM AROUND 1957

This photo from THE SPHERE of December 30th 1911 shows a teacher giving a lesson to “Invalid Children” on the beach at Mablethorpe. What she is holding is a shell ~ picked up from many along the beach and yet obviously keeping the pupils mesmerized.

The Official Guide for 1934 speaks of our high record of sunshine (due to the sea to the east & the Wolds lying so low on the horizon to the west): “In recent times,” says the Guide, “medical authorities have realised the wonderful health-giving value of resorts with a high proportion of sunshine.” “Recent times” perhaps included 1871 when the Convalescent Home (now the Queen’s Park Flats, but endearingly called now by locals “Colditz”) was established. The “Outdoor School” pictured here had started I 1911.

The caption to the photo may well have been prompted by the Tory Lords refusing to pass a Liberal budget. That had resulted in the year 1910 seeing two General Elections. Just before this photo was taken it had been decided to reduce the gap between Elections from 7 to 5 years: but women still did not have the vote… so as the boat is full of girls the SPHERE’s caption is a bit of women’s suffrage campaigning. In fact, because of the First World War, the next election did not take place until 1918 ~ by which time women did have the vote: but not these girls. Only women over 30 were trusted to vote until 1928.

All that said, from the list below we can see that in the Battle of the Sexes today in Mablethorpe there is definitely level pegging!

Brian Wesley [LEFT] of COASTAL FM, now renamed COASTAL BREEZE wtites about his Other Love… VINYL GARAGE

In the last few years there has been resurgence in the interest of vinyl records. Many classic albums are now being re-produced and you can find them for sale, not just in specialist record stores but in the likes of Tesco.

HAVE YOU SOMETHING UP YOUR SLEEVE?

Rare, sort-after & collectable are terms you often hear but the value will also depend on the condition of not just the vinyl but the LPs label, the outer cover, the inner sleeve & any original extras like posters & lyric insert sheets. You will find many vinyl records in charity shops, though they are becoming fewer. Most will be in very poor condition. Compilations & greatest hits were mass produced so are now worth very little.

What does make an album valuable? Some of the most expensive vinyl records ever sold had very little to do with their condition but more about their history. Take for example the John Lennon & Yoko album “Double Fantasy”. You can pick up a good quality copy of this for around a fiver but one copy sold for $150,000 (approx. £118,00)! Admittedly it was signed by John Lennon himself - just hours before his death in December 1980. If you’re very lucky you may have a copy of The Beatles album, “Please Please Me” released in 1963. There were multiple pressings but the most valuable are the very first which have gold lettering on a black label. The mono version in mint condition will probably fetch a couple of hundred pounds but the stereo version is said to be worth four times as much

Of course, there are still a lot of original vinyl records around, & whilst not quite antiques, some can be as much as sixty years old. Age alone does not make something valuable, particularly true when it comes to vinyl.

Got a copy of The Beatles “White Album”? The lower the serial number printed on the cover the more it is potentially worth. The very first copy sold a few years back for $35,000 (£30,000). More realistically, artists to look out for include The Beatles, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd & even George Michael & Madonna - but not all their albums.

If you have a stash of LPs you are thinking of selling there are a couple of shops in the area who would be only too willing to take them off your hands or you can always sell them on online on ebay or even Facebook. My approach with Vinyl Garage is rather different. I treat each pre-loved LP I purchase individually & take time & effort in professionally cleaning not just the vinyl but also the cover - repairing it if necessary, before selling it on - or rehoming it as I like to think. When buying, I value each LP individually but will purchase all records that someone is selling & not just ‘cherry-pick’ the ‘good stuff’. So if you are interested in giving your old LPs a new lease of life in a new home do give me a call on 07798 785 773 You may have a vinyl gem gathering dust!

Since the autumn of 2016 Brian Wesley has been compiling the weekly “WHAT’S ON” guide, supplementing the material that appears every other month in “tidings” with up to date info on local events. This winter, though the Coastal Centre committee agreed with Brian it should take a break. It was in a way a victim of its own success. So much material was flooding in that the booklet became more & more time consuming to produce & more & more expensive to bring out. The small charge for it did not cover the costs & collecting money for adverts was quite a labour. Still, even though much of he material was still appearing on line (on the Coastal Breeze website), when hard copies no longer appeared THEY WERE MISSED… so we felt we should give the idea another whirl. In particular words of Dr Simon Lowe at the Marisco Medical Practice rang true: “More people die of loneliness than of pneumonia.” One of the great things about “WHAT’S ON” was that it helped people meet people & join in a range of activities. Friends we meet in this way can often help in a casual way bucking up our spirits when things are getting us down & there’s not many “pick me ups” available on the NHS!

The new format of “WHAT’S ON” is much simpler. The outside is in colour with adverts for key events on the front (& a charge of £10 for one-off plugs). Inside usually will be Friday to Friday events on the left, on the right the following week-end’s events & on the back a calendar of future events.

“WHAT’S ON” IS NOW COMING OUT WEEKLY AGAIN!

POLICE ON THE PROWL…

The police officer couldn't believe his eyes as seeing this woman driving along Golf Road busily knitting. Overtaking her with lights flashing the officer drew alongside the offender, wound down the window of the police car & yelled, “PULL OVER!” The woman stopped, wound down her window & replied, “Pullover? No, it’s bunting for the Carnival.” "No" she replied, "they're socks!"

The stripped back version of “WHAT’S ON” will be made possible by pruning away all the regular events which make our community so vibrant. There are over 24 venues & 200 or so groups meeting in them. These will be eventually listed in INSETS which will be themed & updated once a month. On the first week of May the inset will list weekly social events, the 2nd week will list hobbies & special interest groups, the 3rd week will list sport, health & well-being activities, the 4th week will list arts & crafts & drama & music groups, & when there is a 5th week the inset will carry info on faith groups, churches & where special help is available. These insets will be updated each month but will be available at the Coastal Centre, at Marisco & at the libraries. So if someone is searching for a particular activity they will be able to ask for the current version.

The other bit of information people ask for are the local tide times… useful if you are going fishing or beach-combing or exercising your dog. The high tides will be rated low, average, high or very high. The info is available on line but it is often simpler to check in this little leaflet.

The “WHAT’S ON” for the following week can be picked up from mid-morning each Tuesday at the Coastal Centre, at Linda’s Café in Queen’s Park, or in the Info Area at Marisco (where there’s also available coffee, books, hearing aid batteries & other info).

And of course if you want an event advertized do let us know!

Adrian

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Since 1928, apart from 4 years during the 2nd World War, the Last Post has been sounded each night at the Menin Gate (on the east side of Ypres) to express the gratitude of the Belgian nation towards those who had died for its freedom & independence. Bullet marks from the 2nd World War can still be seen on the gate. This last March a wreath was laid during the ceremony by Robert Andrews [RIGHT]

NEW BUS ARRANGEMENTS

LINCS TRAINING in Essential Digital Skills NEW WEEKLY SESSIONS at the Coastal Centre 32 Victoria Road Drop-in sessions starting on Wednesday 10th April 9am to noon Everyone welcome: Come and learn how to use Laptops or Tablets. Bring your own device if you prefer to learn on your equipment. A variety of topics will be covered: Search the Internet Online Safety Online Forms Online Shopping Banking Online Health Keeping in Touch Facebook, Twitter Services GOV Services Job search.

From Sunday April 28th a new bus system will be operating in Mablethorpe which, it is hoped, will not be too confusing but will also bring some advantages. Instead of the one 59 bus going straight from Skegness to Louth we will have two buses linking here.

To go to Louth people travelling from Skegness & Sutton-on-Sea will have to change at Mablethorpe where the 51 will start its journey through Louth to Grimsby. This will mean those going to the Louth Hospital or the Princess Diana Hospital in Grimsby will no longer have to change at the Louth bus station, waiting there for an hour if a late bus results in passengers missing the connection. The 51 will thus connect up the north Lincolnshire coast while the 59 will connect the south part of the coast-line, with Mablethorpe in the middle. The 59 will eventually take in Chapel Point, making the journey a little longer, but providing transport for those wanting to visit the new North Sea Observatory. The 59 will also now go through Mablethorpe to Golden Sands ~ a boon for those wanting to visit the Loewen Cinema or the Seal Sanctuary. The 51 will also start at Golden Sands… but the connecting point will still be the Bus Station by the Co-op, so those wishing to travel to Grimsby or Louth can still wait here.

Meanwhile the PIRATE BUS has already started operating for the summer. Its operators PC Coaches of Louth did find the service between Sutton-on-Sea & Mablethorpe last year operated at a loss so that is not resuming. The bus will now make a circuit via the Co-op between Seaholme Road (The Eagle) & Golden Sands.

CHANGES TO PARKING AT THE CO-OP: A STATEMENT FROM THE CO-OP

However this has faced some criticism, has at times been open to abuse resulting in a lack of parking spaces to people living locally & also been detrimental to traffic congestion. To rectify this & ensure that our shoppers take priority an external car park management company will fully take over the management of our car park from 10th APRIL and there will be a free 2 hour maximum stay implemented which will be monitored all year round. This is being put in place to manage the availability of all car parking spaces, including disabled bay & parent & toddler facilities.

Over the last few years it has become increasingly difficult to manage our car park effectively, to protect parking for our shoppers. We have for some time operated a system in which payment was taken upon entry to the car park & then refunded after purchasing goods in store.

THANK YOU to members of MABLETHORPE IN BLOOM for continuing to smarten our street scene!

THE MEN’S SHED

Our MP Victoria Atkins actually came to Mablethorpe last month to visit the MENS SHED. Afterwards she asked to talk with members of the Coastal Community Team… & as can be seen from our cover photo she was closely quizzed on the issue of the day. Don’t though be misled by the caption “Cross-Party Talks”. There were indeed members of different parties (& of none) present: but the talk was not “cross”. Our concerns were deep… but not angrily expressed.

The other caption that could easily mislead is the group which our MP came to Mablethorpe to visit: THE MEN’S SHED. This is an inclusive organisation for men AND women over the age of 18 years old. It meets, currently, in “The Old Toilet Block” at the Golf Road Pullover (opposite The Loewen Cinema) in Mablethorpe on Monday, Thursday, & Saturdays between 9am & noon.

MAKING MUSIC IN MABLETHORPE

Thank you to all who attended the inaugural concert of Mablethorpe Musicians. It was very well attended, everyone enjoyed the music & homemade cakes. We raised over £200 towards our funds.

We are holding a FREE music taster session on June 17th in Mablethorpe Library from 2 to 4pm. Please come along to see us. There will be instruments available for you to try or just come & chat about music. No need to book, just turn up on the day. Or bring your own instrument so we can listen to you.

The group is proud to have an association with “Mablethorpe In Bloom” & its efforts can be seen in the form of the Train Flower Planter at the High Street end of Station Road. It has also produced planters for “Furnichurch”. Members interchange skills & assistance to enable members to make a variety of items such as Bird Feeders, Bird Boxes, Rocking Horses & Ornamental Wheelbarrows like the one in the photo [LEFT]. The range of items is limited only by the space & tools available.

Membership is £24 per year but we do allow people the opportunity to try it out for a couple of times before asking for enrolment.

The aims of the MTS Men’s Shed are: ◎To reduce the isolation and exclusion of

men/women ◎ To increase participation in practical activities

The objectives of MTS Men’s Shed are: ◎ To provide a venue for men/woman to talk to,

& connect with, others whilst participating in group & / or individual projects. ◎ To provide opportunities for friendship &

LATE KNIGHT OPENING: FRIDAY 26TH APRIL… 4 to 7pm

After the success of he Christmas late night shopping event which was staged at no cost & with the minimum amount of administration the Carnival Committee decided to stage another event to boost local trade in our shops round about Easter. But when? We hopefully have enough visitors to help our local economy over the holiday period… so our imagination turned to St George’s Day. That is, of course April 23rd and that this year is the Tuesday after Easter Bank Holiday Monday. So we opted for the FRIDAY afterwards banking on the Knight running late as well as shops agreeing to open late then.

And many of them have now planned to stay open: look out for the poster & flyer listing the shops. The publicity will circulate the week-end before the event hoping to tempt holiday makers back & local residents to come out & support our shops. As at Christmas there will be craft stalls in the Coastal Centre, in Social 22, & at the Louth Hotel. Stalls cost just £5 with proceeds for the Carnival: book via Steffy on 07718 208 400. There’ll be opportunities for Selfies with St George & children will gather to sing at 4pm.

Then our Coastal Community Chorus will lead us in patriotic songs… at the Coastal Centre at 6pm, at Social 22 at 6-30pm & at the Louth Hotel at 7-15pm.

Bring along your England Flags & join in the celebrations!

"What's on the table, Mabel?“ Wilfred Pickles used to ask his wife during the long running radio show that gave people the opportunity to make their dreams come true. With at least £25,000 on offer from the government’s Future High Street Fund ELDC decided to “Have A Go” & nominated Mablethorpe as the single candidate it was allowed to put forward in its Expression of Interest in the fund. Should this be successful & we go through to Stage 2 of the bid, a task force from the Future Town Centre unit would be seconded to assist in drawing up an application for funding towards the reshaping our town.

WHAT MIGHT OUR HIGH STREET LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE?

In the past plans for Mablethorpe have foundered on the way that our shopping centre is also our main thoroughfare. When, for instance, we close part of our High Street for the weekly market this has a direct detrimental impact on businesses the other end of the High Street & Quebec Road which just lay staff off that day. The exciting thing about this potential funding is that it is not for cosmetic changes but for real redrawing of our infrastructure. A series of workshops initiated by the Coastal Community Team & headed by Janet Stubbs of Woodthorpe have sent their suggestions to ELDC, feeding into the application process. We need free car parks close to where people are shopping, we need a new transport hub, & traffic has to be re-routed. Among the stimulating ideas put forward is a pedestrianized centre with an expanded market & pop up entertainment, an expansion of the Land Train route, & an inland pier over-arching the currently dangerous congestion point at the foot of the prom. While Banks & Dentists desert us Hope does not!

MABLETHORPE & KEEP ON KNITTING!

CONGRATULATIONS to THE BLITZ doing it bit to save the planet by replacing plastic straws with paper ones ▶

Members of the House of Lords decided last year that it was no good sitting & talking in Westminster about the plight of seaside resorts. Instead they decided to visit some of them. A delegation therefore arrived in Skegness (by train!) & spent time listening to concerns expressed by representatives young & old explaining the challenges of our “visitor economy”.

STUDENTS FROM MABLETHORPE COLLEGE ON NATIONAL TV

When, though, this April the findings were published “Look North” & national TV descended on Mablethorpe to find out what the take on the findings were from our young people. Students from CLIP, Mablethorpe College, are here seen being filmed stressing once again what it is like to live in an area cut off by poor broadband, lack of good transport links & few avenues to work. Their views hopefully will re-enforce the Lords Report in flagging up our area’s needs!
