Lightning start at the Eigergletscher (Eiger Glacier) station.

… but bitterly cold!Excellent conditions for the ascent … Up to the summit ice fi eld.

Mammut Testevent

Showdown in the North Face Arena. Not for fair-weather mountaineers: the exciting Testevent for the new Mammut Eiger Extreme top range. Experienced and proven mountaineers from all over the world were invited to test the new collection. Their goal: to put the collection through its paces during an ascent in icy cold conditions and, in the ice fi eld at the peak of the North Face of the Eiger, to form a large “X”. The sign for Extreme …

Page 3: Mammut Highlights Winter 2011/2012 English Version

At 5 a.m. sharp, top mountaineers from Slovenia, the USA, Austria, Germany and Switzerland set out for the Eiger. The ice and snow conditions were fantastic and they made rapid progress over the western fl ank up to the ice fi eld at the peak of the North Face of the Eiger. Unsurprisingly, skyrunner Josh Wharton was fi rst to the top (and back down again). Johann Kaufmann had already outlined the planned “X” using fi xed ropes. Everyone quickly took up their positions and photographer Röbi Bösch photographed the new key visual at least 1,000 times from the helicopter. An event for X-treme fun all round. Climbing has continuously developed. As is also demonstrated by more than thirty new routes, for example “Magic Mushroom”. 20 pitches, 600 meters of climbing, a diffi culty rating of 7c and, as the reward, the breathtaking freedom on the steepest mushroom in the world. This progress would not have been possible without the equally rapid development of materials. Mammut is playing a leading role in this area, and with the Eiger Extreme collection is confi rming its commitment to uncompromising quality and innovation.

Past the Death Bivouac and Traverse of the Gods to the summit. The Eiger North Face is the embodiment of Extreme. On the second ice fi eld, the Traverse of the Gods or the Spider, humans and equipment are put through harrowing tests. The Eiger Extreme collection has been developed for times like these. The abrasion-resistant textiles and new combinations of materials are exceptionally light, withstand extreme mechanical strains and offer maximum protection against climatic infl uences.

For some, it’s the nightmare of the Alps, for others it’s their greatest aim. No other rock face polarises quite as much as the Eiger North Face. The best mountaineers in the world come to Grindelwald to pit themselves against it. In 1938, the fi rst ascent took the climbers four days. Today, the speed record set by the Swiss mountaineer and Mammut Pro Team athlete Daniel Arnold stands at 2 hours 28 minutes. He has shaved 20 minutes off Ueli Steck’s previous record to become the new speed record holder on the Eiger.

“On the second ice fi eld, we were moving in the center of the arena. We weren’t on a ‘death wall’, but were moving in a dead zone. While everyday life carried on mundanely below, we were completely reliant on ourselves.”Reinhard Karl, Erlebnis Berg

“The steep patch of fi rn or ice in the middle of the summit wall is known as the ‘Spider’ due to the cracks radiating out from all sides of the snow fi eld, like legs and tentacles. The Spider can be a deadly combination of snow, ice and rock. If you are surprised by bad weather, there’s no escape.”Heinrich Harrer, Die Weisse Spinne

Scotland trip

Climbing in the HighlandsScotland? They only have hills over there. The highest mountain is just 1,344 meters. However, the more we looked into it, the more inter-esting the prospect became. We therefore decided to (Stephan Siegrist, Michi Wärthl, Thomas Senf, Mario Arnold, Stephan Ruoss and Dani Arnold) to fl y to Scotland in February. The people were friendly and the scenery was truly beautiful. It certainly left us in no doubt that even small moun-tains can be diffi cult too! It’s unbelievable how many diffi cult routes there are, all without bolts. All climbers should strive to accept and respect this ethic.

Safety for the entire group. The fundamentals are good route planning, knowledge about avalanches and proper conduct on the mountains. The Mammut avalanche airbag prevents the personal risk of burial and therefore acts as a preventive measure. For effi cient rescues, the PULSE or ELEMENT Barryvox®, an avalanche probe and shovel are essential.

ELEMENT Barryvox® Digital 3-antenna device pared down to the essentials. The ELEMENT Barryvox® stands out thanks to its ease-of-use and clear instructions. Its one-button operation and clearly laid-out display make the device very user-friendly. Rapid, precise location is guaranteed, even for less experienced users.

Ride R.A.S. An avalanche backpack can help to prevent complete burial and therefore increases your chances of survival in the event of an avalanche. The Mammut avalanche airbag has already been recommended by some experts as additional item of safety equipment. The Ride R.A.S. uses the innovative Snowpulse Removable Airbag System R.A.S., the fi rst removable avalanche airbag system. It is designed to allow the user to remove it and fi t it in another R.A.S.-compatible backpack.

01 Square shapeWith a volume of 150 liters, the square airbag offers excellent buoyancy. The position of the airbag helps to keep your head on the surface of the snow and allows fast location.

02 Removable – one system for several backpacksThe system can be easily removed from the backpack and used in another R.A.S.-compatible backpack.

03 Snowpulse Removable Airbag System (R.A.S.)The lightweight and compact system ensures fast and effective infl ation. Easy, intuitive use. Rapid insertion of the cartridge (less than one minute).

Roped together in solidarityWith every purchase of the anniversary book and items from the Peaks Collection, Mammut customers are supporting the IFMGA. Mammut is donating part of the purchase price to the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations. Donations are also being collected from the ascent of the 150 peaks. Through these actions, we are helping to pro-vide mountain guides from emerging nations with sound training and modern equipment.

Mountain sport in book formTo celebrate its 150th anniversary, Mammut has compiled 150 stories by well-known authors on the topics of alpinism and outdoor sports. This fascinating collection of words and images provides an insight into mountain sports of the past and future. Available from Mammut or in book stores.

www.mammut.ch/150stories

Mammut is celebrating a birthday. On the world’s most beautiful peaks. Mountaineers from all over the world are warmly invited to celebrate with us.

The ascent of the peaks is the real celebration: 150 rope teams are climbing 150 peaks all over the world within a period of one year. Equipped with the new anniversary collection and led by IFMGA-certifi ed mountain guides, they will make their summit dreams come true.

The Mammut Anniversary Basecamp launched the celebrations for our 150th anniversary, and the ascent of the Jungfrau in August 2011 marked the fi rst of the 150 peaks. However, as well as creating some unforgettable experiences for the peak climbers in our anniversary year, we also want to transmit values such as solidarity, team spirit and rope teams.

Each of Mammut’s anniversary actions is helping to support the IFMGA, to assist mountain guides from emerging nations and guarantee the safe ascent of the 150 summits in the biggest peak project in history.

150 years of Mammut
