This year, we invite you to “Go Beyond” our beauty as we open the doors to our workspaces, introduce you to our talented staff, and reveal the inspiration behind all that we do. Go beyond the garden gates during special events, tours, talks, and more to discover that what’s behind the scenes is also a thing of beauty. Orchids were one of the first collections our founder, Pierre S. du Pont, and his wife, Alice, developed for the Gardens. To celebrate this history we present Orchid Extravaganza in our lush Conservatory where nearly 5,000 orchids drape from walls, flow from baskets, and form towering arches in artful displays.

Also not to be missed are our rare blue-poppies we force to flower into an inspiring display of sky blue blooms in March.

Elevating Orchids

(1) Orchid Extravaganza is an extraordinary blend of horticulture and artistry, showcasing nearly 5,000 additional orchids displayed in many artistic forms. This year we’re taking Orchid Extravaganza to new heights—the ceilings of our Conservatory! Look up at a newly designed chandelier of orchids comprised of 300 blooms hanging above the Exhibition Hall. Stand beneath six spectacular orbs, brimming with nearly 1,000 yellow and white Phalaenopsis, moth orchids, on the Patio of Oranges. Also, see the Garden Path’s newest addition as historic, wrought iron stands elevate clusters of Paphiopedilum, lady’s slipper orchids, along the pathway.

Our Orchid Core

(2) Did you know that we have 17 core collections—groupings of specific plants within our total collection that have historical and horticultural significance? The largest of our collections is our Orchid Collection composed of over 2,400 different kinds of orchids (hybrids and species). The collection began in 1922, one year after the Conservatory opened, when Alice du Pont was given a dozen cattleya orchids. To care for and build this growing collection, our founder Pierre S. du Pont invited Longwood gardener Louis Jacoby to focus his work solely on orchids. Today, 50 species and hybrids—nearly 150 plants—remain from the original collection. We collect the showiest and most unusual species and hybrids for diversity. Up to 500 of these plants can be seen daily in our Orchid House, a display that changes three times a week. This year, for the first time, you can see orchids in their growing houses. The Orchid Collection is curated by Lee Alyanakian, who has

been working with orchids here for 18 years. Come hear Lee speak about our orchids and their care during the Beyond the Garden Gates Days (February 2 and March 2).

A Pressed, Dried, and AnnotatedLink to Our Past

(3) Go beyond our Music Room’s doors to get an up-close look at an important link to our past: our herbarium specimens. Our Herbarium, started in 1955, is a true archive of the plants that existed, and now exist, on the grounds. It’s like a library, but the data is stored in biological form as pressed, dried, and annotated plant specimens. Today, our Herbarium houses more than 10,000 specimens, including rare plants, champion trees, native plants, and other celebrated plants dating from the time of the Peirce family to present. The specimens are kept in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room in our Horticulture Building. Herbarium specimens have lasted and can last hundreds of years when carefully preserved. A small collection of herbarium specimens will be on view in our Music Room throughout Orchid Extravaganza. Additionally, a limited supply of our botanical pressings are available for purchase in The GardenShop.

Unlocking the Longwood Library

(4) Did you know that we have a library at our Gardens? The Longwood Library Association was established in 1953 by Pierre S. du Pont and his personal secretary Frank Battan, and included Mr. du Pont’s horticultural and botanical collections. Today, we continue this vision with a full Library and Archives staff that collects and preserves our history through official records, historical objects, and photographic documentation. The Longwood Library and Archives is a valuable resource for our employees, students, and volunteers. In addition to the books collected and owned by Mr. du Pont, our collection also includes current and rare literature on plants, garden design, botany, and the history of gardens. For the first time, during our Beyond the Garden Gates Days, we invite our guests to visit the Library and browse our collection, meet our Library and Archives staff, and view a few historical artifacts.

Meet Victoria: The Seductress at The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show (5) One of our most popular and spectacular plants—the giant water-platter—is the star of our newest book: Victoria: The Seductress. “This is the most influential and significant book of its kind about Victoria,” says our Director Paul B. Redman, “It is our hope that this book not only document Victoria’s past, but that it also inspire future generations to share in the fascination with this true queen of the plant world.” The book chronicles the story of Victoria’s discovery, cultivation, and introduction to public gardens around the world. Written by Tomasz Aniśko, our curator of plants, the book details a tale of empire building, political intrigue, masterful plantsmanship, and floral seduction. With historic documents, stunning photographs, and rare illustrations, the book is destined to become the definitive literary work on this subject. It will be unveiled at The 2013 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, and will be available for purchase at The GardenShop, beginning March 1.

*Please note: 1906 will be closed January 8–February 1. From February 2–March 19, 1906 is only open on Saturday and Sunday for brunch, 11:30 am–3:30 pm. 1906 returns for the season on March 20.

For Your ConvenienceLongwood Gardens covers many acres. There are no shuttles within the Gardens. We’re happy to offer the following:

– Non-motorized wheelchairs, electric scooters, and children’s strollers. Limited supply available.

– Rentals are free for Members, but Member guests will be charged a fee.

– Scooters are not available during rainy, snowy, or freezing weather.
