Course Overview

of Informatics and Analytics (OIA) focusing on the application of Operations Research and ManagementScience techniques in improving healthcare operations.

As students learn in Chapter 1, Operations Management evolved from Operations Research,Management Science (OR/MS) and Industrial Engineering into this type of course in a College of Business. This course is designed to articulate with other university and college courses in Operations Management andto prepare students for the undergraduate ETS Major Field Test for a Bachelor Degree in Business.

Teaching Philosophy

Very passionate about Operations Management and strives to help students learn the critical learningobjectives of this course. Fundamentally unless students are planning a career in marketing or finance, theywill work in a relative operations management career.

Operations Management help enable an organization's strategy and must be aligned with marketing needs toachieve financial goals (these three courses are vital for business and management majors).

While many students take online courses to support flexibility for their schedules, learning quantitative oranalytical courses which require math can be a challenge online (why almost 100 recorded tutorials in thiscourse). Online learning also requires selfdiscipline for students to manage their time to complete courseneeds around the rest of their busy lives (a 3credit accredited 8week course requires 1518 hours/weekminimum).

Blended courses apply further active learning strategies that build upon these online lessons to extendstudent's learning and ability to further evaluate the concepts in this course.

Computer Requirements:

Students should have regular access to a computer that is connected to the Internet. It isstrongly recommended that students have a broadband (highspeed) internet connectionsuch as DSL or a cable modem. When viewing online videos or taking online quizzes/testsand doing homework, students should have an internet connection that is stable and willnot drop their connection. Students without a stable highspeed internet connection shouldconsider making arrangements to use alternative means (i.e.St. Petersburg College libraryor a similar facility) where a stable highspeed internet connection is available. Pleasenote student computer problems do not constitute an acceptable excuse for missing asubmission deadline (procrastinating until the due date increases risks that students maymiss or do poor on required submissions). Students are responsible for making sure their computers are compatible to the systemrequirements (system check). Internet browser use and settings, security and virusprotection software settings, necessary plugins and software requirements, computerupdates, and other computer uses today require students to assure the computer they areusing for their studies will appropriately support the course needs to be successful. Students should contact SPC Technical Support if they need further assistance to getanything in this course to run appropriately on their computer.

SPC Technical Support Desk Call Center

A standard file format applies to submissions in the College of Business to support filecompatibility, sharing, and commenting needs. Students are required to submit allassignments in Microsoft Office formats (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoftformats). Other formats may have compatibility issues. Students can access MySPC to getWindows and MS Office (FREE for both Mac and Windows users, seehttp://www.spcollege.edu/microsoft). As well as Office 365 online access to supportstudent email, one drive, etc.

Further ExcelOM and POM for Windows are available in MyOMlab for students in theDownload Center. This decision science software may support students with study planand homework submissions. Please understand the ExcelOM Addin from MyOMlabrequires MS Office on the computer to operate. ExcelOM is offered for both Windows andMac users in MyOMlab. It is common for Mac users to also use Windows (see

Communication Policies:

Students should always practice professional communications not only with their professor, but also with college administration and their peers in the course (disrespectful anddisruptive students may be removed from the course by disciplinary action which mayinclude suspension or expulsion from the college). Blended students may not use anyelectronic devices during class meetings unless for academic purposes. Professionalcommunications should be used at all times which includes using an appropriate subject inthe title, as well as a greeting or salutation and closing signature in emails (not doing so isonly suitable for family and friends). Please understand employers are asking SPC to workwith students on netiquette to help students grow better communication skills for asuccessful career (see link for more tips, as well as the guidelines in the syllabusaddendum).

Attendance Policies:

As the syllabus addendum states, instructors will verify and report student attendance inthe first two weeks. Students will be classified as ‘No Show’ if blended students do notattend their physical meeting or if online students do not provide any submissions for eachweek. Students with attendance issues in both Week 1 and 2 will be administrativelywithdrawn from the course and will receive a grade of W. As the syllabus addendumfurther states, students with financial aid will be responsible for paying for the class if theyhave attendance issue these first two weeks.

Please understand skipping any of the assigned actions items and submissions as shownin the syllabus schedule may result in students not being successful (earn 0 points) in thecourse. However, more importantly, students will not learn the week’s objectives skippingthese requirements. Later week lessons build upon prior week lessons typically leavingstudents struggling if they skip the action items in a course. As Chapter 1 highlights, students need inputs in their personal learning operation to manage the transformationneeds for the outputs or submissions in a course (this is an operation students need tomanage no different than a business).

Further in the week following the last date to withdraw with a W (see academic calendar),instructors will report students who are not actively participating in the course. Studentsthat have not completed the majority of the assigned graded submissions in Week 3through Week 5 (i.e. must complete at least two of the three assigned submissions, i.e.Study Plan, Homework, and Quiz each week) will be reported as not actively participatingin the course and will receive a grade of WF in that following week. As the syllabusaddendum states, students may withdraw themselves prior the last date for a W (beforecompleting 60% of the class). However, if students receive federal financial aid they maybe required to repay a portion (please speak to a financial aid counselor, seewww.spcollege.edu/getfunds). Students should review the collegewide policies furtherto understand GPA and financial consequences.

No late submissions will be accepted unless the student provides a documented excuse(i.e. family death certificate, doctor's note, etc.). After verification of this documentation alate submission may be accepted as long as completed within one week from the duedate. Advance notice should be given to the instructor whenever possible to arrange forfurther alternatives. Please note computer problems, travel, and lack of planning do notconstitute an acceptable excuse for not meeting a deadline. Students should review thesyllabus schedule and plan their time (minimum 15 hours per week per course) tocomplete the action items ontime (all deadlines are by 11:55PM EST).

4. Study Plans Students need to complete at least two study plan problems(math/analytics) successfully in each assigned chapter, supplement, and module inMyOMlab for this grade category (study plan subsections are marked with 1 pointpossible). There are learning aids in MyOMlab to help students solve theseproblems, along with textbook examples and further study plan problem pencastsand tutorials under the Course Content in the Watch Tutorials (as needed) resources. The Watch Tutorials (as needed) resources will demonstrate solving select studyplan problems both manually (pencasts) and with POM for Windows/ExcelOM(videos). Students are encouraged to complete these study plan problems first aftertheir textbook readings to learn and practice the decision analysis methods beforeattempting further problems. Additionally in the MyOMlab Multimedia Libraryresources are the ExcelOM textbook example data files and additional practiceproblems. Students have unlimited attempts to complete study plan problems(getting an algorithmic variation with other data). Study plan points are not posted inMyCourses until after the due date. Further study materials are available inMyOMlab to support quiz questions to learn terminology and key concepts in theother study plan subsections, as well as in the Dynamic Study Modules andMultimedia Library chapter flashcards, videos, simulations, cases, and PowerPointsummaries.

5. Quizzes/Exam – Students will take weekly quizzes in MyOMlab to assess theirknowledge gained from their reading. The quiz questions focus on the keyterminology and concepts in the assigned reading each week. Students have 50minutes to answer 25 questions on each quiz. Students may retake a quiz 3 times(getting different questions each time) to improve their grade. The maximum score atthe end of the week is used for grades after the due date. Students should reviewweekly quizzes after the due date for errors to prepare for the final exam. In Week8 there is a comprehensive Final Exam that will open after students finish Quiz 7 andHomework 7. This Final Exam will close at the end of Thursday in Week 8 to supportfinal grade reporting needs. This Final Exam has onethird study plan/homeworktype problems and twothird terminology/concept type questions. Students get oneattempt for this Final Exam (maximum 3.5 hours).

6. Homework Students will complete homework problems from the assigned readingin MyOMlab each week. Students should practice problems in study plans first tolearn the decision analytics similarly required for these homework problems. Studentshave the ability to redo a homework problem once (getting an algorithmic variationwith other data) to improve their grade (total of two attempts per problem). Ifstudents use a learning aid for homework problems it however reduces the numberattempts available by one. The maximum score at the end of the week is used forgrades.

7. Case Studies Online students will complete case studies that are graded in Week 3and Week 7. This is designed to help the student relate the operating managementconcepts and analytics to actual businesses. The textbook includes case studies(videos on cases are in MyOMlab Multimedia Library) which will be used with thissubmission. Students will have to complete additional company/industry research forthis assignment and use APA format to properly cite this research with thetextbook/video information. These case studies may be completed over the course, however students will have to meet specific Week 3 and Week 7 (Wednesday)submission deadlines. Blended students will not complete these case studiesas these students will earn the same points through blended class participationinstead for this grade category.

After that time, a grade of “F” (or higher if the workthat has been submitted is adequate to justify the higher grade) will be assigned. Studentswith anything less than 80% of the course completed will result in the appropriate lettergrade being recorded.
