    Introduction

Largest population of dairy animals:Cattle- 185.18 millionBuffalo- 97.92 million

    Cont..

Mastitis is the most common disease oflactating herd.

Mastitic milk and treatment pose biggest

hurdle in clean milk production. Clean milk means:

Milk with low somatic cell count

Milk with low bacterial countPreferably free from hazardous residue

    Bovine Mastitis

Inflammation of mammary gland Most commonly inflicted by pathogenicmicroorganism in immuno-compromised

animals. Inflammation mediators cause loss ofsecretory epithelium.

Animal bound and environmentalpathogens perpetuate in the dairyenvironment.

    Mastitis and economic losses

Next to FMD, economically mostdevastating disease in India.

Affected quarters show 30% lessproductivity and cow looses about 15%production.

Prevention and control of mastitis iswarranted in post WTO scenario, toexport good quality dairy products.

    Prevention of contamination atfarm level

Mastitis control program should be maintained byqualified professionals/ Veterinarians.

Strict measures should be taken for-

Cleaning of milk biers after each milking andshould be kept dry.

Animal sheds should be washed with clean waterand disinfectants.

    Conventional vs. Alternative therapy

Currently antibiotics are the only provenmethod of mastitis therapy. Most of the antibiotics are inefficacious and

    contaminate the milk.

Alternative approaches to the treatment aregaining importance globally to reduce thehuman health hazard.

The newer moieties are cytokines, bacterialenzymes, bioresponse modifiers, vitamins andtrace elements, medicinal herbs andhomeopathic medicines.
