    he day ater an Italianpolitical protest in Octo-ber, news agencies pub-

    lished photos o a smashed statueo the Virgin o Lourdes. Testatue lies in the Via Merulana,the lovely street that connectsthe Lateran Basilica to the Ba-silica o Santa Maria Maggiore,with several other churchesbetween. Why has this act o

    outrageous anti-Marian iconoclasm been perpetuated withinblocks o the popes own cathedral? Because among the peace-ul protesters engaged in a common ritual o Italian politics,there were some violent scoundrels, who had no interest inpeace or genuine social order. Teir iconoclasm reveals theiragenda, inasmuch as they have one at all.

    Te Roman protest was touted in the American press as aspin-o o the Occupy Wall Street movement (OWS), but I

    doubt that it was. Accordingto ime Magazine, it had beenplanned or months, whichwould make its conceptionolder than OWS. Besides, thistype o demonstration is com-mon. Ive only been to Romethree times, and twice Ivebeen caught in the middle o

    one, in exactly this locale. Its acommon theater or letist pro-tests. Each time, the brothersand I were on our way to visitSaint John Lateran, when wewere caught up in a swellingmass o humanity decoratedwith communist ags (yes,red ones, with hammers andsickles!) and Che Guevara -shirts, with some persons reek-ing o pot. At various stations,

    public agitators were shoutingthrough large amplicationsystems, while many chantedslogans as they marched ingroups. o add to the ca-

    cophony, demonstrators were blowing whistles, o the type usedby reerees in sports matches. Tere we were in our habits sur-rounded by noisy, dope-smoking commies. wice.

    Neither protest ended up violently, as ar as I know. Tesewere letists, trade union members, and probably some comingalong or a good time, who were screaming about Silvio Berlus-

    conis corruption, getting high, drunk, or both, and then clog-ging up the Roman Metro and making lots o noise on theirway home. Tey were not violent.

    Te recent protest was worse. For one thing, there wasproperty damage, including Molotov cocktails being hurled atbuildings and police cars being set are. Worse, there was thestatue, which was no accident. Protesters broke into the church,removed the statue, and dashed it to the street. We must notorget that blasphemy against Our Lady in her images is oneo the ve oenses that motivated heaven to give us the devo-tion o the Five First Saturdays.

    Te Occupy Wall Street protests, and many o its alliedactivities around the globe, are crying out against the nancialtyranny o the banksters and crony capitalists whose wealth isgrowing while others are suering in these bad economic times.Generally speaking, these olks are calling on big governmentto save us all, which is like a bug asking a spider or a hand.By contrast, the ea Party has been calling or the shrinkingo government to constitutional limits, less taxation, and lessbureaucratic meddling in the aairs o private citizens.     So, or your amily git,create a amily altar or shrine.I you already have one, em-bellish it! Make your amilyprayer lie something special.Start with a sizable and beau-

    tiul image o Our Lord orOur Blessed Mother. Ten,notice how the Church makesprayer special and imitate thesethings. Around your picturemay be placed blessed candlesin sturdy sticks or glasses. A bible may be set on a handsomestand. You might get a candle lighter/snuer. A special clothcould be spread on a tiny table and any relics that you mightbe blessed to possess could be devoutly displayed here or ven-eration. A nice kneeler or two where the ather and mothercan kneel to lead prayers would add a lot. Holy water could be

    made available in a ont. Blessed incense (with a small thurible,charcoal, and matches, etc.) would add to the holy atmosphere

    When a guest enters your home, he should immediatelyknow it is a Catholic household by the absence o things con-trary to the Faith and by the prominent display o a amily

    shrine. Although this may upset a ew visitors, it will more o-ten ediy and interest your guests. I a visitor is really disturbed

    Rest in Peace, Sister Mary Bernadette, M.I.C.M.

    On Friday, December 16, at 8:08 pm, Sister Mary Bernadette died. She

    was surrounded by amily members and all the brothers and sisters, who were

    praying the litany o the dying when she breathed her last. All teen decades

    o the Rosary were prayed, the prayers o the dying, and then immediately

    ater those, the Ofce o the Dead was commenced by Father Phillipson. It

    was a beautiul death.

    Tis nonagenarian ounding member o the Slaves o the Immaculate

    Heart o Mary until her death, the oldest surviving sister in any o the

    houses received extreme unction on the previous Wednesday, in very edi-

    ying dispositions. She had been in declining health or some months.

    Family and long-time riends had been visiting her these last weeks at

    Saint Philomenas Convent, where she received wonderul care rom her sis-

    ters in religion and rom visiting nurses.

    or Sundays and east days. A special crucix, a lovely statue oOur Blessed Mother (i you dont already have a picture o herthere) and any other saints that your amily has a particular de-votion to should be there. Anything that can lend dignity andsolemnity to amily prayer time is benecial. Te sacramentalso the Church are all excellent possible additions to your amilyshrine. A simple vase o owers can make it alive.

    Dont think that you have to add everything possible toyour shrine right away! You could just start with the central im-age o Jesus or Mary. As the years go on and your amily makesuse o your shrine to pray, you will see it grow and become verypersonalized by your own amily. Home May Crownings, nove-nas, east days and even deaths will put their nishing toucheson your shrine.

    Rubrics are another thing that you can make use o at yourshrine to show that your prayer time is special. Standing and

    then bowing at the Glory Be at the end o each decade o theRosary can be reminiscent o the Divine Ofce. When we at-tend Mass, we genuect, bow, stand, sit, cross ourselves withour hand or thumb and perorm other rituals that show andoster our Faith. Tese liturgical movements are importantto our prayer lie. Te Church attaches such importance tothese moves that she commands her ministers to use themin the liturgy and grants indulgences to the aithul or usingthem in the course o their daily lie. By making the Sign o theCross devoutly, or example, you can gain an indulgence thatis increased by using Holy Water. Why not get all o the indul-gences you can?

    Finally, as in the liturgy o the Mass and Divine Ofce,there is singing, so also in the Catholic home there should besinging, which, as Saint Augustine said, is to pray twice. A

    simple possibility is to stand and sing the Salve Regina in placeo the Hail Holy Queen at the end o the Rosary. O course,other Marian or seasonal hymns could be sung as well.

    As a crowning accent to using your amily shrine, parentshave the privilege o blessing their children. Tis is a very piousceremony perormed by making the Sign o the Cross on eachchilds orehead with the right thumb while saying, May Godbless you. It is a beautiul way to remind everyone o the truenature o the amily and could easily be done every eveningater night prayers.

    May your amilys prayer lie ourish and may your domes-tic church be so ervent that the conversion o our dear countryis hastened by it.

    Religiously, everything since has

    been but a marking o time, soto speak. A marking o time,that is, until Christ once morereturns, to judge the living andthe dead. We are, or shouldbe, hanging on or dear li e tothe period o time when JesusChrist was with us or i we

    miss its directions, its signicance, we are done or. We allback into a state worse than beore.

    So momentous was the impact o the Incarnation andbirth o Jesus Christ upon the world, that time was divided interms o it. We speak o the time beore Christ (B.C.), and othe time, not which is afterChrist, but which is evermore ofChrist. We live today in the nineteen-hundred-and-ty-rstyear o Our Lord, 1951 A.D.

    Te time when God Creator o heaven and earth and allthings, whose thought maintains the planets and seas, moun-tains and lands, creatures and angels surely that time, whenGod became man and dwelt amongst us, is the pivotal, centraltime toward which all beore and everything ater must everpoint.

    God the Father had been preparing the world or the com-ing o His Son rom the tragic moment o Adams and Evesbanishment rom Paradise. Te story o the Jewish people isthe story o the getting ready or the coming o the Holy One.Tree hundred years beore the birth o Jesus, the providenceo God takes very denite shape in this work o preparation.

    For instance, three hundred years beore the Angel Gabri-els visit to Mary, and her conception o Gods Son through thepower o the Holy Ghost, seventy o the holiest and wisest Jew-ish doctors began the translation o the Old estament romHebrew into Greek. So wonderul was this translation whenit was nished, so discernible is the work o the Holy Spirit init, that it has been called inspired. Te Old estament itselis, o course, inspired in the rst and direct meaning o theword, but so aultless and so pure was the choice o the Greek

    words or the Hebrew in this translation made in Alexandriain Egypt, that even it is thought to have been protectively in-spired by the Holy Ghost. It is known to us as the Septuagint,because o the seventy doctors who labored to complete it.

    With the Septuagint, Gods revelation was sae rom theJews, who would have distorted the Hebrew to t their pur-poses when the Messiah they reused to acknowledge had

    come. Te Jews eventually did distort the Old estament,ater the death o Our Lord, by the addition o the almudto the Pentateuch and by other ways, but the sacred books othe Old Law, by the providence o God, had been made secure

    or the children o the Faith. Tey were preserved in Greek inthe Septuagint and no harm could be inicted on them by theJews.

    Even the conquest o Alexander, three hundred years be-ore the birth o Our Lord, and the subsequent Hellenizing ohis vast territories, were used by God to prepare the world orHis Son. Greek, as a language, lends itsel to the most perectcommunication.

    Tree hundred years, too, beore the birth o Jesus in Beth-lehem, the Jews . . . ound themselves liked, respected, wel-comed. Tey travelled ar and wide in trade, unconscious (andsometimes conscious) missionaries, spreading the story o theMessiah to come, o the prophecies nearing ulllment.

    Tere was peace everywhere in the world, when Christ wasborn the only time in history that this has been so. And allthe prophecies perectly were ullled, in the birth, lie, anddeath o Jesus. It was, to repeat, the ullness o time.

    Te ullness o time! God walked His earth. He who hadbrought them into being out o nothing, trod the land, lookedat the sun, gazed at the stars, beheld the silver radiance o themoon. For the rst time, God saw the beauty o His own cre-ation, with the eyes o man.

    And so lled with delight was Jesus with His own and HisFathers handiwork, brooded over by the Holy Spirit, that Hewas a lways illustrating His utterances in terms o this marvel-ous creation:

    Matt. 6:28 And or raiment why are you solicitous?Consider the lilies o the eld, how they grow: they la-bor not, neither do they spin.

    29: But I say to you, that not even Solomon in allhis glory was arrayed as one o these.

    30: And i the grass o the eld, which is today . . .God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye o littleaith?Religiously, there never will be a time again like to the

    time when God lived on earth. Tose men who were alivethen, or in the years immediately ollowing, received the mes-

    sage o eternal lie and what must be done to attain it, straightrom the mouth o God. Tey are the ones we, almost twothousand years later, must listen to in order not to be ooledas to what is the truth and what is not the truth. I the worldwere many hundreds o years older than it is today, it wouldstill have to return to the early Christians or the purity andorthodoxy o interpretation o what Jesus said and taught. Teearly Christians got it rst-hand. Tey must ever be our mosttrusted teachers.

    When I received thelast Cardinal KungFoundation news-

    letter, I saw that its composer,

    Joseph Kung, the late cardinal snephew, had written a brie eulo-gy or Jesuit Father Beda Chang,the rst priest to be martyredby the communists rom theShanghai diocese. Father Changwas the principal or Saint Igna-

    tius Middle School in Shanghai when Joseph attended there inthe 1940s; the account, thereore, included a personal touch toa story o heroic witness to Christ and His holy Church. Josephended his tribute by asking or the martyrs intercession orpeace on earth and or the ultimate grace o dying a holy death.Ten, the writer saluted his mentor with an irrepressible excla-mation: I love you, Father!

    Beda Chang Cheng-Min was born in 1905. Were it not orJean-Claude Coulets, Father Beda Chang: Witness for Unity,we would not know all that much about this redoubtablechampion o the Church Militant. It would have required someresearch in the government-conscated Jesuit archives, and thatwas not going to be allowed by the communists. However, asmall window o opportunity did present itsel to Jesuit FatherPaul Mariani who managed, in 2006, while doing researchabout the Jesuit schools in China, to send out some declassiedmaterial, which quickly aterward was reclassied. I discoveredFather Marianis short biography o Father Chang by just doinga Google search. In composing Beda Chang: Shanghais Jesuit

    Martyr, he relied on the declassied documents that he had,but more heavily on Coulets work, which I do not have (New

    Jesuit Review, 2010, Vol. 1, No. 4).Father Chang became known in the United States or a

    brie period ater his death in 1951 on account o Bishop Ful-ton Sheen who had spoken o him in one o his talks in 1952and had praised him as a martyr or the Faith. Ater this,however, there were so many martyrdoms and imprisonmentsin China and eastern Europe that Father Chang became justanother statistic. When Father Mariani took a tour o the oldJesuit school, still active as Xuhui High School, there was a

    string o portraits o the past principals and directors o SaintIgnatius going all the way back to 1840. Beda Changs pictureis on the wall; in act, he is one o the ew who were Chinese.When Mariani pressed or inormation rom the guide as towhat happened to Chang, the guide lowered his voice and saidsimply: He died.

    Father Beda Chang was good riends with ShanghaisBishop Ignatius Kung who, prior to being consecrated, hadalso taught at the Jesuit schools in Shanghai. In act, whileChang was serving as principal o the middle school and Deano the Faculty o Arts at the Jesuits Aurora University, Father

    Kung, although not a Jesuit, was dean o their Saint IgnatiusHigh School. It would be our years later that, on the night oSeptember 8, 1955, the communists moved in and arrested thebishop along with 1200 other

    prominent Catholics o thecity. Chang held other admin-istrative positions o respon-sibility in the diocese, but hisgreatest inuence was with theCatholic youth who, to put itmildly, loved and revered him.Te communists had everyreason to ear such a man aman o ortitude and charityand, much to their chagrin,a man who had the prudenceto know what issues he couldcompromise on and what is-sues he would not. Te Catholic Faith and the Churchs moralteaching were, or Father Chang, non-negotiable. And this iswhat brought on his arrest.

    Jean Leeuvre, in his Shangha: les enfants dans la ville,quotes Hu Wenjao, a pretended convert who betrayed Chang,as saying to local magistrates: I you cannot dispose o Beda

    In honor o the martyr, Bishop Kung wore red vestments,as did all the priests who oered requiem Masses throughout

    the city in the days ollowing. In Saint Ignatius Cathedral, onthe 12th, police monitored a very powerul sermon, which wasdelivered by a very brave priest who lashed out at the injusticeo arresting Father Chang, whom he lauded rom the pulpit asa martyr or the Faith. Te communist government coun-tered with a statement denouncing the prayers and Masses orChang as a new type o bacterial warare by the imperialists a counter-revolutionary mental bacteria (Weir, Charlene,Te Wisdom of the Popes, p. 219, 1957, Macmillan).

    Te Crimes o Father Beda Changaken rom Father Marianis article, here is a list o the

    alse accusations conjured up by the Chinese Communist Partyand published right ater his death under the title, Te Finaleo the Imperialists Running Dog and Counterrevolutionary,Beda Chang. in their Liberation Dailynewspaper:

    In 1940, he brazenly entertained the Japanese. He sentyouth to the States or its slavery education. He invited ban-dits to give reactionary talks at Saint Ignatius High School.He also linked-up with the American bandit Chiang Kai-shek and the criminal Yu Pin. He distributed anti-Com-munist propaganda. He engaged in politics at the school byputting the the school committee in the hands o reactionary,obscurantist, hal-baked students, urging them not to let theprogressive elements take control. As a result: Ater severalinterrogations Chang could see the proo o his crimes withoutany hope o reuting the accusations. But the criminal Changdied o encephalitis beore the court could deal out punishmentto him. Te article ends on an exasperated note. Tey [theCatholics] would have it that this criminal counter-revolution-ary is a saint.

    later, ater the body was eventually given to the Church andFather Chang had received a proper burial, the aithul beganto visit his tomb in droves. Police were called in to guard thetomb and keep the people away, or there had already beenclaims o miraculous cures. I there are any miracles at thetomb, the communists warned Bishop Kung, you will be held

    responsible (rom Bishop Fulton Sheens 1952 speech at theUniversity o Detroits Jesuit High School). Guards were placedat Someone Elses tomb outside the city o Jerusalem two thou-sand years ago.

    Te China Missionary Bulletin editorial said more in a ewexquisite words than a thousand o the most eloquently deliv-ered testimonies: His sermon is endless now, written in eter-nity or the ears o men and angels with the last ree git he hadto give to God his lie. He was only orty-six years old.

    Chang, all your eorts will come to nothing, or he will oil allyour maneuvers. Te holy Jesuit would not bend. Futile werethe eorts o the Reds who tried every means, rom threats toattering promises, to convince him to lead the Catholics by

    example and join their newly ormed Tree-Sel Patriotic Move-ment. Self-governance, self-support, and self-propagation boileddown to no oreign intererence (the pope) in Chinese religiousaairs and state control o the Church. (For Catholics this wasthe precursor o the schismatic Chinese Catholic Patriotic As-sociation.)

    Te Martyrdom o Father Beda ChangHe died said the tour guide. Father Chang did not last too

    long ater the Reds overtook Shanghai in 1949. He was arrestedin August 1951, and taken to a prison north o the city. In the

    cell next to his was Father Aid-en McGrath, ounder o FrankDus Legion o Mary in Chi-na. Father McGrath related,ater he was released in 1954,that or two months all hecould hear rom Father Changscell was the sick mans cough-ing, vomiting, and moaning.

    In his work, Father BedaChang: Witness for Unity, Jean-Claude Coulet describes themartyrs our month ordeal:

    every eort was made tobreak his will and to use himin spite o himsel. Nights on

    nights o interrogation ollowed his reusal, when lack o sleepand continual tension combined to wear down the last resourc-es o his bodily strength. Fellow prisoners heard him, exhaustedand at the end o his strength, repeating simply over and overagain Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, help me.

    Te constant lack o sleep poisoned his nervous system,and Father Beda ell into a coma. Fearing that he would die be-ore they had had their way with him, the authorities ordered hisimmediate removal to the prison hospital. But it was already toolate .

    Father Beda Chang was dead. He received his martyrscrown on November 11, 1952.

    Te communists claimed that Father Chang died rom en-cephalitis. Actual cause: torture and starvation. Even the mar-tyrs brother, a medical doctor, did not recognize the victimsblackened and emaciated corpse when he was nally called in totake away the body a number o days ater the death.

    Tousands had gathered inside and out o the cathedral inShanghai waiting or Father Changs remains to be delivered toBishop Kung on November 12 or the uneral. Te communistshad promised the bishop that they would deliver the body or

    ering that the enemies o a Christian social order include theunholy trinity o corrupt big business, corrupt big government,and corrupt big bankers, it becomes clear that the OWS peopleand the ea Partiers have both identied genuine enemies.

    But the problems and, more importantly, the solutions tothem go beyond our typica l let-right dichotomy. In brie, itsnot blue staters versus red staters.

    Neither the conservative ea Partiers nor the liberal Oc-cupiers have proposed as a solution a return to Catholic socialteaching. Distributism, an attempt at systematizing Catholicsocial principles into an economic praxis, is now looking betterand better. It even recently gained the attention o the Washing-ton Post not that thats necessarily a testimony to its worth.Te protagonist o the Postarticle, Phillip Blond, makes thesame point I do: Both the big American protest movementsidentiy real enemies, but neither has the right solution. Neither

    the nanny state nor the blind orces o the market can solveour economic woes.

    Who has the solution, you ask? Te Catholic Church, in hertraditional social teaching.

    Rather than attempt an outline o that social teaching inmy limited space, I reer readers to the advertisement, on theopposite page, o relevant books and audio products availablerom our bookstore.

    In a recent article, Gary Potter asked whether we are seeingthe advent o a new dark age. I the answer to that question isin the afrmative, then it would be wise to preserve some o themonuments o Catholic social thought so that the eudalism o

    our new dark age may give way to a new Christian social order.Tats what happened ater the rstDark Age.

    It was the Catholic Faith, scholastictheology, sound philosophy, and theguidance o the Roman pontis thatgave us such a Catholic social order inChristendom. Wherever the presentglobal economic upheavals are takingus, we must realize that the Churchhas the answers. And here is where ourdoctrinal crusade touches upon the

    everyday problems o humanity.     Regarding Our Lady, its very clear rom the Fatima revela-

    tions that the Holy rinity has given a new mandate to theQueen o Heaven, whose mission in this Age o Mary isunique in all the history o the Church. Consider these wordso Sister Lucy, told to Father Augustin Fuentes, about the Ro-sary:

    Look, Father, the Most Holy Virgin, in these last times inwhich we live, has given a new efcacy to the recitation o theRosary. She has given this efcacy to such an extent that thereis no problem, no matter how difcult it is, whether temporalor above all spiritual, in the personal lie o each one o us, oour amilies, o the amilies o the world or o the religiouscommunities, or even o the lie o peoples and nations, that

    cannot be solved by the Rosary. Tere is no problem, I tellyou, no matter how difcult it is, that we cannot resolve by theprayer o the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary we will saveourselves. We will sanctiy ourselves. We will console Our Lordand obtain the salvation o many souls.

    Te malcontents who invaded the church on the Via Meru-lana and threw down Our Ladys statue, wicked as they were,probably had no idea that they were insulting the very one whocan spare them and the world this chaos.

    Tose o us who do have an idea who know about theFive First Saturdays ought to make reparation or this act bygiving the Holy Virgin even more love and devotion.

    ur Lord gave mankindHimsel as the Lamb

    who, in His passionand death, would take away thesins o the world. He did thisby emptying Himsel (Phil.2:7) and taking on our esh atthe Incarnation, being born othe Virgin Mary nine monthslater. He did even more by way

    o a git, in giving the Church His enduring presence in theHoly Eucharist as sacrament and communion. Te gits, how-ever, I speak o in this column were given by our Mother Marya little less than a century ago; they are perhaps more relevant

    now than at any time since then.In a 1957 interview, Sister Lucy responded thusly to aquestion rom Father Augustine Fuentes, who had just beenassigned as postulator or the causes o Jacinta and Francesco:Father, the Most Holy Virgin did not tell me that we are inthe last times o the world but she made me understand thisor three reasons. Te three reasons were (1) because the devilwas in the rame o mind to engage in a nal battle against ourmother; (2) God gave us two last remedies against the evil inthe world: the Holy Rosary and devotion to the ImmaculateHeart o Mary; and (3) God exhausts all other means beorechastising the world. I we ignore, repulse, even hate our lastchance, are we not irting with the sin against the Holy Ghost,i.e., openly rejecting with ull knowledge and consent, the sal-vation God oers?

    As part o the remedies God oers, He has given us sevenFatima prayers. Our Lady appeared at Fatima, a village in thecenter o Portugal, in 1917. What is not well known is that inthe year 1915, at mid-day, as our girls rom Fatima were pray-ing the Rosary in a eld, they noticed the sudden appearanceo a cloud in a orm like that o a man, hovering above theoliage o the valley. Te white gure appeared twice more tothem. Lucia de Jesus los Santos, then eight years old, was oneo the girls. Tere was nothing more to this event, but it was animportant precursor.

    In 1916, there was another not widely-known occurrence.Tis time Lucia was in the elds with Jacinta and FranciscoMarto, her cousins. Sometime ater their usual aternoon Ro-sary, they saw a light, and a gure o a man, whiter than snow.He said, Fear not! I am the Angel o Peace. Pray with me! Teangel taught them a prayer known as the Pardon Prayer. It wasthe rst o seven prayers attributed to the apparitions at Fatimaand later to Sister Lucia in her convent. Te Angel o Portugaltaught the children the rst two prayers, Our Lady taught thenext three, and Our Lord taught the nal two, years later, toSister Lucia. Tese are the gits Our Lady let us. Te prayers

    Tere are many sources or inormation on the story o Fati-ma. Te apparitions, as well as the history o Fatima and thethree secrets, exposes us to a great deal o what God revealedto us through His Church.     recently took a weekend trip to Provincetown on Cape Cod,Massachusetts, to visit amily and to get a little sightseeingon the side. I had not been there or thirty years and had

    orgotten the incredible beauty o the magnicent rolling dunes,dinghies dancing and dashingatop the waves, seals rolickingalong the shore, and breach-ing whales just o the beach.I stood on a steep cli lookingat the endless expanse o oceanand sky and my thoughtsdrited to a time when theEuropeans rst glimpsed thismarvel o Gods creation, mucho it not changed rom their

    discovery. o my let, plainlyvisible or miles around, stoodthe Pilgrims Monument, thetallest (252 eet) granite struc-

    ture in the United States, built to commemorate the puritansrst landing in America in Provincetown, not Plymouth, asmost Americans believe. I thought it strange that history callsthem pilgrims, or a pilgrim has a set destination in mind, suchas a shrine or the Holy Land, somewhere that is known.Te pilgrims set o rom England in the Mayowerto escape religious persecution, destination uncertain,but in not-too-many years they would unleash their

    own brand o religious persecution as puritans on any-one called papists or with skin other than white. Ibelieve it should be called the puritans monument tomemorialize the unbelievable cruelty they exercisedon the Native Americans, and then on the papists intheir inexorable drive o building a Protestant empireculminating in the subjugation o the Americas in theirdubious doctrine o Maniest Destiny. It is little knownthat Samuel de Champlain had visited these watersteen years earlier than they and had mapped the baysand inlets o Cape Cod, charts that they probably usedon their own voyage to America. Sitting on that cli,

    I smiled at the irony o the puritans coming to thisparticular spot, an area o endless sand, or we all knowthat a house built upon sand can not last.

    Early Days o ChamplainSamuel Champlain was born in Brouage, France,

    in 1567, the son o a sea captain. Very little is knowno his youth except that he was trained to the sea andalso ought admirably in the religious wars that wereimpoverishing France, culminating in the Edict oNantes, which gave the Protestants a protected posi-

    tion. It seems the norm in the Canadian saga that unemployedsoldiers had a yearning or more adventure. Te New Worldpresented an opportunity to satisy that urge, and Champlainwas entranced with the new ortunes to be gleaned in America.His rst voyage brought him to La Cadie ( a name stemmedorm the Indian word aquoddie the pollock sh) whichwe now know as Acadia. He spent several years exploring thebay o New Fundy, traveling south along the Maine coast, andas mentioned earlier, sailing urther south to Cape Cod, all thewhile drawing charts that are extant today. His stay in Acadiawas terminated due to the colonys charter being revoked orlack o prot, and upon coming home to France, he immediate-ly set about planning a return. And his return made his nameas Te Founder o New France, or it was he who realized theimportance o that prominence o land that juts out into the St.

    Lawrence River (the Indians called it kebec a narrowing owaters), now known as the great city o Quebec. He oundedhis headquarters and capital there, cleared orests, planted gar-dens, built palisades or its deense. Determined to make it last,he provided colonists, soldiers, artisans, and, unexpectedly, thatnew breed o Frenchman, the Canadian, who would strike outand earlessly roam those vast orests in search o adventure andurs, and by doing so, pave the way or missionaries to bring

    the Faith to the savage tribes. But the purpose o this article isto ocus on a little-known incident that Champlain orchestratedwith his Indian allies, eventually bringing about the annihila-tion o the Huron nation.

    An Unnecessary Oense with Huge ConsequencesTe charters granted to the colonists mandated a prot be

    made to recoup the investment, and in Canadas instance, thismeant urs obtained by barter with the Canadian tribes. It wasthe Montagnais tribe who brought their urs to Quebec, andit was the Algonquins and the Hurons who made up the largeotillas which came down the Ottawa river to trade. Hostile toboth these tribes were the Iroquois who called themselves theOngue Honwe the men surpassing all others and in-deed, physically at least, they were, or their many depictions al-

    ways portray them as lithe, ta ll, well-muscled, and indeatigablein war. Champlain, in order to cement his relationship with hisIndian allies and to insure the continuing trade that was vital tohis edging colony, embarked on a ateul raid, which ensuredthe lasting enmity o the Iroquois to the French and particularlythe Hurons.

    In June o 1609, Champlain sailed in a shallop (an open

    river boat) along with twelve soldiers each equipped with anarquebus, and, ollowing in canoes, warriors o the MontagnaisAlgonquin, and Huron tribes. Tey descended the St. LawrenceRiver, turning south onto the Richelieu River, deep into theIroquois country, looking or trouble. Heading into present dayNew York, they came upon a waterall and the shallop had tobe abandoned, thus disconcerting the Indians who took it as abad sign and began to desert. Champlain could not lose ace,so he told the remaining warriors that he would go on with orwithout them. Te more stout-hearted chose to ollow, so, now,along with only two o his Frenchman (the rest o his soldiersreturned with the shallop) and about ty Indians, he pro-ceeded in canoes to the Lake o the Blessed Sacrament (LakeGeorge), and there, where Fort iconderoga now stands, theydiscovered a cluster o canoes near the shore. Te Hurons real-

    ized that they were elm canoes because they sat heavier in thewater (I thought all early canoes were o birch), and since theelm canoes were only used by Iroquois, their search was ended.

    A Strange BattleWhat ollowed was unique in Indian warare which was

    always predicated on surprise or ambush. Te French stayed

    in their canoes, while the Iroquois reused to risk a battle onthe water. Tey jeered each other at a distance all day, hurling

    insults with the one invitingthe other to battle on their ter-rain. ired o this game, theIroquois called out that theywere returning to the orestand they would remain thereuntil the French and their al-lies came ashore beore mak-ing war. It is important tonote that the whole while theFrench hid themselves rom theIroquois so in reality surprisewould be achieved. Te nightpassed in this impasse, but inthe morning, the allies landed

    (with the French still hidden behind them). Te Iroquois, twohundred o them, advanced, arrogantly led by three chies withhatchets raised, howling their death songs. Badly outnumbered,the Hurons and French unveiled their surprise. Te ront ranksopened up and through the ranks came Champlain. Te silence

    that ensued was deaening, or, seeing a white man or the rsttime, the Iroquois stood in shock. Tey lowered their hatch-ets to their sides and in stunned silence stared at Champlain.aking the opportunity o inaction on their part, he raised hisarquebus and red at the three chies, killing two and wound-ing the third. Te explosion jarred their senses sending theminto action and they immediately picked up their bows and senta volley o arrows into the Hurons. At this critical moment,Champlains other two men appeared on their anks and senta volley into the Iroquois. Tis was too much or the Iroquois:three white gods who were ghting alongside their age-old en-emies. Tey turned and ed, pursued by the Hurons who cap-tured many, and being just as cruel as the Iroquois, proceededto maim, torture, and burn their captives, much to the chagrino Champlain.

    Tis was the ateul decision that Champlain made or thesurvival o his colony in Quebec. In pursuance o this boldpolicy, he returned a year later and surprised the Iroquois,who were hunkered down behind a barricade o logs, proceed-ing to exterminate all but teen, who later died in the res othe Huron camp. No other policy seems to have entertainedChamplain other than making the northern tribes his allies by

    making war on the Iroquois. No missionaries were sent, no rep-resentatives were dispatched to negotiate, no treaties signed orpeace only war was employed. Te Iroquois could not ace

    the deadly guns o the French,but later, rom their associationwith the Dutch at Albany, theywould obtain these same gunsand come back with vengeanceto destroy their enemies. Fromthis one encounter, the OngueHonwe would nurse a bloodeud which lasted more than acentury, and always, they sidedwith the English in their warswith the French.

    We now know a little oChamplain, and much o hisateul decision, but what othe destruction o the Huron

    nation? Gods ways are not our ways, or you see, the Hurons re-sponded most readily to the Catholic missionaries, most notably

    to Pre Jean de Brbeu, and in time they would cease their oldpagan practices and their urge or war. In a matter o time onlya ew Hurons still had rearms or other implements o war.Tey became gentle and asked or nothing more than to hunt,to sh, to plant their maize, and ollow the injunctions o theBlack Robes, their spiritual athers. On the contrary, the Iro-quois never ceased their warlike ways. Teir spiritual directioncame rom the progeny o the puritans that is, i it looks likea papist, acts like a papist, then it must be exterminated. Prod-ded on by British guns, ueled by the Protestant hatred o thepapist French and their allies, the Iroquois set about on a cam-paign that would decimate the Huron nation, drive the ew sur-vivors rom their hereditary lands, and erase a culture o heroicconverts, who previously had burnt and tortured their victimsat the altar o Satan, and eventually would become holocaustsor the Victim they now adored.
