GOOD FRIDAY HOLY LAND COLLECTION PALM SUNDAY One of the trees still alive from the time of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
Is Christ the King in Your Heart? On Palm Sunday, the faithful are confronted with the
poignant contrast between the triumphant entry of Jesus into
Jerusalem and the harrowing Gospel of the Passion that begins Holy
Week. Such is the every-day life of the Christians in the Holy Land
– knowing the joy of the Gospel in their heart but facing the harsh
realities of the daily struggle for basic human needs.
As we read in Luke’s account, Jesus made his way to
Bethany and sent his disciples to prepare for his entry into
Jerusalem, a mere two miles away. The crowds greet Him as a king,
a detail exclusive to Luke, and the proclamation of “Peace in
Heaven” echoes the angelic announcement of the angels at the birth
of Jesus (Lk 2:14). He rides a colt, a young donkey, and enters in
humility and in peace, pointing to what His Kingdom actually
entails and fulfilling the words of Zechariah 500 years before,
“A just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of
an ass” (Zech 9:9-10).
In a grim foreshadowing of the Passion to come, we see the
Pharisees calling on Jesus to rebuke his followers. They now begin
to plot His death, and the great drama of Holy Week un-folds.
As pilgrims to the Holy Land pray in the Garden of
Gethsemane, they realize that Jesus would have seen the soldiers
coming as they left the city walls and began their ascent up the
Mount of Olives to arrest him. The Church of All Nations next to
the Garden, with its Rock of Agony where Jesus prayed and sweated
blood, is owned and maintained by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, who receives financial support from the Good
Friday Collection. The Franciscans also sponsor multiple apostolates that assist our brothers and sisters in Christ, many of
whom are descended from the Christians of the first century.
St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) preached, “How different the cries are that now are calling him ‘King of
Israel’ and then in a few days time will be saying, ‘We have no king but Caesar!’ What a contrast between the green
branches and the cross, between the flowers and the thorns!” Bernard’s point is for all of us. Are we like the crowds in
Jerusalem? Do we proclaim Him our King on Sunday and by the end of the week deny Him in our thoughts, our actions,
and our own fear to live the Christian witness in our families, with our friends, and in the world? A wonderful opportunity
for all of us to give Christian witness is to make a generous contribution on Good Friday to the Franciscan Custody of the
Holy Land that preserves the Holy Sites and the Christian presence in the Holy Land.
MARCH THEME FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY Forgive Offenses: Bear Patiently Those Who Do Us Ill
Words are powerful. They have the power to build up or tear down. This month, during the reading of the Passion of our
Lord, we hear powerful words of torment and derision used: jeered, reviled, sneered, shouted, flogged, beat, ridiculed, and
crucified. It was Jesus Christ who experienced all of this pain and hatred. Not only was he physically tormented but he
experienced verbal abuse from those around him. Yet, not once did he respond with violence or anger. Instead, he bore it all
patiently and forgave his tormenters even when he was in agony on the cross, saying, “Father, forgive them, they know not
what they do.” While Jesus suffered his passion and death willingly, he calls each of us to forgive as God does. God never
tires of forgiving, no matter how great the offense, and through the grace of God, we can do the same. Each person must
humble themselves in order to let go of whatever anger, pride or hurt is lingering in their heart in order to forgive. We can
only forgive because God first forgave us.
REFLECTION: Typically, the people closest to us are the ones that can hurt us the most. But, we must remember that every person is
worthy of God’s love, and no sin is too big for His forgiveness. That is why we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation
available to each of us. The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a powerful experience, and what better way to enter into the
Easter season with a clean heart and conscience. Don’t be nervous about going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation if you
have not been in some time. It is never too late! It is Jesus Christ Himself who waits for you in this Sacrament.

PRAYER CORNER “The tragedy of the Passion brings to fulfilment our own
life and the whole of human history...It means
contemplating the mystery of Jesus Christ as something
which continues to work in our souls... Here is our
chance to react against our weaknesses with an act of
faith. We can trust in God and resolve to put love into the
things we do each day."
St. Josemaria Escriva
Many days of Lent are now behind us. Perhaps you
failed to live up to your expectations of a "good Lent."
Resolve now to begin again to sacrifice, fast, and give
alms this Holy Week, determined to put love into every-
