March 2015

Following our 1-1 work and budgeting sessions at Trinity

College, KYM recently hosted one of their Risk and

Resilience events at our building. At this ‘Finance Focus

Day’ students took part in a range of activities designed to

increase their financial confidence and much more.

Many of the students found this extremely useful and we

can see that most of those who attended found that their awareness

of financial issues increased greatly as a result of taking part. Cath

O'Neill, Head of Year 12 at Trinity Catholic College, said “Thank you

for providing our students with such a varied and relevant day.

Everyone had a really good day”.

100 students took part in activities led by:

Barclays

Tandem Finance

The Illegal Money Lending Team

Teesside University

Middlesbrough Environment City

Moneywise Credit Union and Hemlington Linx also

attended and held stands to raise awareness of credit

union services and drug/alcohol issues.

Easter Fun Day in Saltersgill

KYM, working in partnership with Endeavour Housing, is excited to be involved with the ‘The Key_Your

Potential Unlocked’ initiative.

For 20 years ‘The Key _ Your Potential Unlocked’ has been helping young people to unlock their own potential

and be the very best they can be.

Nichola (our Health Advocate) and Khialah (our Engagement Officer) have recently

been trained as facilitators for this project and are

working with our Youth Panel and young people who

benefit from our health services to compile projects to

benefit young people across Middlesbrough.

As part of the The Key project, young people can apply

for funding to run any small project they want. This

can be anything from a family fun day to a soup

kitchen - previous projects have even recorded a full

music album! The group can apply for more funding in

stages, but each new project will take on more

responsibility and the projects will bring more benefit

to the community.

We will give more updates on our projects in the next few months.

‘The Key_Your Potential Unlocked’

our work then please get in touch!

KYM in East Middlesbrough

Many young people involved with KYM are struggling with their English and Maths. This causes issues in their

everyday lives and makes both the application and assessment phases of applying for jobs really difficult. This

can be a huge barrier between them and the job they want.

In partnership with Middlesbrough Community Learning Service, we have begun to hold vital basic skills

assessments in our building. We then aim to offer basic skills sessions to young people based on their needs

identified via the assessments.

We hope that these sessions will help our young people improve their basic skills and unlock their real potential.

For many of our young people this provides a vital piece in the puzzle to help them move towards gaining

employment.

Ten young people took part in the initial English/Maths assessments and we are looking to continue this work in

the future to support more young people.

that would like to know more about the work we are doing then please just give us a call on

KYM Opening Times

KYM was delighted to recently host a fun packed financial advice session to 15 young people who are part of

the National Citizen Service programme.

We started the day with ice breakers and the young

people were then divided into groups and given

scenarios to play out. They used paper to dress one

member of their group as individuals from different

professions, then considered how they spend money

on priority and non-priority expenses. Role plays

were then used to showcase their work.

The session covered budgeting, giving the young

people a much better understanding of what a

budget is, how to budget and how often to budget.

There were lots of fun money quizzes and

opportunities to put their new budgeting skills into

practice. The final exercise covered planning an event on a set budget and the young people could choose

anything from holidays to music events!

We plan on running many more group sessions over the next year. Do you know a group of young people who

could benefit from one of our money management sessions? If so, then please contact us to get involved.
