Leeds City Council are inviting Otley residentsto take part in a consultation and to have theirsay on new proposals to reduce air pollution.

Proposals include introducing a Clean Air Zonethat would charge buses, HGVs, taxis and pri-vate hire vehicles that fail to meet latest emis-sions standards for entering.

The consultation comes after the governmentinstructed the council to outline plans to tackleair pollution in the city after identifying Leedsas being likely to fail legal air quality levels by

Public responses to the consultation will shape thecouncil’s final air quality proposal which will bepresented to the government later this year.

The consultation is open until 2nd March andcan be found at:www.leeds.gov.uk/airqualityconsultation

Friends of Chevin Forest are looking forward to a new year ofactivities on The Chevin following the success of our OpenDays last year. We teamed up with other groups such as theChevin Orchard Project, Dry Stone Wallers, Forest School andLeeds Environment, Atmosphere and Forests (LEAF) to showcasetheir work and encourage people to get to know The Chevinbetter. Lots of people had fun trying out new activities andlearning about history and environmental issues.

In May we participated in the Otley Walking Festival with a coupleof historical walks. This year we will be participating again andwill be accompanying leaders on guided walks visiting historicalplaces on The Chevin. Look out for details in the WalkingFestival leaflet and on our website.

We are always keen for new members either to undertakeenvironmental activities on The Chevin such as scrub clearing,Balsam bashing or step renovation, or to help our local historygroup, Chevin Through Time, who are researching and archivingthe history of The Chevin.

Sadly in September we said farewell to our oldest foundingmember, Stella Murdoch, who retired from the committee andfrom her volunteering duties. She is a truly amazing lady whosaw through the change from analogue to digital recordings, embracing each new technology with her wonderful, positiveattitude. We will all miss her.

The good news for us was that Sainsbury’s selected us for asecond year as their Charity of the Year and exciting things arehappening behind the scenes with this support. We are alsoextremely grateful to other groups that have supported us withdonations such as Otley Camera Club and Otley Town Council.

If you are interested in volunteering with our charity or knowsomeone that would benefit from our recordings pleasecontact Mandy Thompson on 07753237756 or John Barker on07816768626.

The Bridge Church has been busy this year with the Drama Group and Uniformed Organisationspresenting ‘The Tale of the Century’ in music, words and dance to packed audiences on threenights at the end of January.

There was also another successful fundraising event held during February where members andfriends met for a meal at the Red Pepper with part of the proceeds going to ‘Feed the Minds’ acharity supported by the church which helps marginalised people transform their lives througheducation using community-led projects in the Global South.

Look out for ‘Afternoon Teas’ on Saturday 10th March, an ideal event to bring mum to forMothering Sunday, and also for events during the Tour de Yorkshire.

Details of our regular worship services and other forthcoming events can be found on our websiteat www.otleybridgechurch.org.uk or our Facebook page – Otley Bridge Church.

FRIENDS COME OF AGE!Ever since Friends of Gallows Hill formed in 1997 we have beenworking in partnership with Otley Town Council to manage GallowsHill Nature Reserve. After 21 years it is interesting to reflect ondevelopment of the reserve and plan for the future. Earlyphotographs show a site dominated by rank grassland beingplanted with trees by volunteers; today woodland is mature andwe are introducing groundflora and coppice rotation in thewoodland.

Managing nature reserves is about playing the long game – forvolunteers planting trees in 1997 it may have been hard to

imagine the reserve as it is today and the benefits of theirwork for woodland birds, bats, amphibians and other wildlife.Volunteering at Gallows Hill is about doing something positivefor future generations of Otley.

Why not join in our 21st anniversary celebrations and volunteerwork days?

The past three monthshave proved to be someof the hardest as TownMayor of Otley, in fact Iwould say it was harderthan working full time. Iwas out fund raising, serving meals, attendingevents and doing justabout everything you canthink of.

I know many of you willsay, it serves you right! AsI have said before, beingTown Mayor provides you with the opportunity to raisefunds for charities and to help ‘put Otley on the map’.Both these things are important to me and drive me on.On cold damp days I have stood under the Buttercrossand it is only the thought of people benefiting from myfundraising which keeps me going.

I will not, in this limited space, be able to list all I havedone, but here are just a few things. Both the SnowmanTrail and the Enhanced Christmas Market were new forOtley and both had a degree of success. The workinvolved in staging these events was tremendous withmany hours of planning and organising. Many of youhave asked if we can stage the Snowman Trail again?Yes, I hope we can if we can overcome some of thedifficulties.

The Christmas light turn on was a very well attendedevent and was enjoyed by the large crowd. Manypeople thought that Paul Tayler was great as MichaelJackson. My Christmas Concert, the Christmas TreeFestival and the Victorian Fayre added to the Christmasfeel around the town.

Many cafes and groups provided Christmas hospitalityfor older people, those alone and vulnerable. Some ofwhich I managed to get along to and help at. It makesme very proud to think that many people think ofothers in our society before thinking of themselves. Iwas also delighted to present as Chairman of ‘Hangon to a Dream’ a cheque for £10,000 to a local boy tohelp toward the cost of an operation he required.

If you would like to make contact with the Town Mayoror request their attendance at an event, please contactthe Mayor’s Secretary Tom Shortall on 466335 or email:[email protected]
