MARCH 2019 WEEK 10 – TERM 1
The St Charles College 1st XI
spent the weekend in
Pretoria, representing the
Dolphins franchise in the
Cricket South Africa National
Schools T20 competition.
The team started strongly by
beating St Andrews College
from Grahamstown on Friday
afternoon and followed it up
with an excellent performance
against Hoerskool Waterkloof.
On Saturday morning the
Saints came up against
Queens and posted a
massive 205/3, winning the
encounter with a bonus point.
On the Saturday afternoon,
against Paarl Gimnasium, a
remarkable game of school T20 cricket took place. The Saints batted first, scoring 135. The Cobras
representatives chased and were controlling the game, requiring 39 runs off 7 overs with 8 wickets in hand
when the Saints off-spinners entered the bowling attack. The crucial cross-pool match seesawed and
eventually Gimmies needed 2 off 2 balls with 5 wickets in hand. Saints opening bowler, Keegan Crawford,
held his nerve and the game resulted in a tie; a Super Over ensued. Paarl batted first and scored 17/1,
smashing the last two balls for 6. Saints sent in Madande and Madhevere, the latter hitting 3 consecutive
boundaries and giving the Saints some hope. Off the last ball, St Charles College required 3 to win; the
batsmen ran 2 and got run out by a whisker on the third.
A tied Super Over! The tournament rules dictated that in the event of a Super Over tie the team who hit the
most boundaries would be declared the winner, thus St Charles College won 16-14 on boundaries and
booked their place in the final. The large crowd, including many Old Boys studying at Tuks, witnessed one
of the most amazing T20 finishes they will see. Spare a thought for Paarl Gim, a school with a very proud
history, who also lost on the last ball of a Super Over against St Stithians the day before.
It was an All-Saints final on Sunday, St Charles College representing the Dolphins vs St Stithians College
representing the Lions franchise. The Saints from Maritzburg, after losing the toss and being asked to bowl,
got off to the perfect start with two electric, full length diving catches in the first 6 overs. St Stithians kept
grinding and managed to get to 123 in their allotted overs. St Charles College would have been pleased at
the change of innings but for the first time this summer their batting let them down and they were all out for
70. Credit must go to the St Stithians bowlers who were superb on the day, Man of the Match Liam
McCarthy getting 4/14 to help his school lift the National trophy for the fourth time.
That brings the curtain down on a historic summer of cricket for St Charles College, not the fairy-tale
ending, but congratulations to a team who won 21 consecutive matches and made it through to the schools
National T20 Final.

Prep 1st XV vs St Andrews
On Thursday our Prep 1st XV
welcomed St Andrews from
Grahamstown on to campus for an
afternoon of rugby.
“On Friday 15 March 2019, a group of Saints boys and I went
with Outreach and Mrs Joubert to visit some children.
This was a wonderful experience. We arrived and
immediately felt the joy and excitement that was radiated by
the children. Conversing with a five year old was the most
memorable. They were very keen to share about their
experience in pre-school. In that moment it reminded me of
my time in pre-school. We then had a soccer match where all
the kids were bouncing around in all corners of the field
bursting with energy. We were also able to meet the
dedicated women who are the caretakers of the children.
They showed us their crochet and beadwork skills. As we
were about to leave, we shared a handshake with the kids.
This made sure that the memory and experience of “Indawo
Yethemba” would not fade.“ - Abenathi Sigaba (Grade 11)

MIC Night
The Grade 10 Physical Science class dabbled in illusions recently with a
project on Pepper‟s Ghost – an optical illusion often used in theme-parks,
magic shows, theatres and music concerts. The illusion is created by using a
pane of glass or clear plastic and placing it at an angle to the audience,
making sure that the object creating the image is hidden from the viewers.
The audience then sees a reflection of the object superimposed over the
stage. There were some amazing projects created by the boys. The three top
projects were from Kyran Otto, Ryan Betch and Zolani Jama who were in third
place. Seth Kritzinger, Gower Shaw, Joshua Knowles who were in second
place and Cameron Barker, Unako Nowele, Colin Makenge and Pablo
Libombo who were in first place. There were many other brilliant projects but
special acknowledgement must also be given to Dan Builu Monji, Aum
Maharaj, Dylan Weda, Tristan Stielau, Hugo Rennings and Mvuyelwa
Mazibuko. Well done boys. - Physical Science Department
Junior Primary Grandparents Day
Physical Science Experiment
Bursting with excitement, our boys welcomed their Grannies and Grandpas to the Junior Primary earlier this week!
Our JP boys and teachers have been working incredibly hard over the past few weeks, putting together a special show around the theme of „weather‟. Comparing the changing weather to life, it was the perfect theme to help tell their Grandparents that they are their sunshine!
The Grade 4 boys visited
St John‟s D.S.G. yesterday
to learn all about the history
of their school.
The girls rapped the history
to the boys and then took
them on a tour of their
school explaining all about
how it has developed to
what it is today.
We had a lovely morning
out learning all about their
lovely school.

Scrummies Easter Family Picnic
Grade 4 Outing to St John’s D.S.G.
On Thursday morning, our boys from Scrummies invited their families to join them at school for a special Easter picnic. The morning included a hunt in and around the Pre-Primary School for Easter Bunny cardboard cut-outs, which were later redeemed for delicious chocolate eggs. It was a lovely opportunity for families to enjoy some quality and light-hearted time together.
