Reflecting on the Hunting Beagle World ChampionshipI remember well, standing in a running pen on a Friday

afternoon watching some hounds run while fielding the first phone call with upper management discussing the potential need to cancel events. Something that, until then, was against normal policy. That was now nearly nine months ago when our country got turned upside down. In the days and months that followed, we cancelled event after event, due to Covid-19. Most all of the World Qualifying Events that were scheduled in the preferred time of year, were amongst those.

Still, most clubs were willing to postpone and reschedule later in the summer months even though it meant much tougher conditions, in many cases, to get dogs qualified. Even then, there was still uncertainty whether or not the World Championship could take place, after much of the country remained under strict mandates.

Sitting in the office this morning reflecting, I am in awe of the 2020 Hunting Beagle World Championship. How did we manage to have 250 hounds entered, much less qualified? The result is a testament to many folks and all those clubs that rescheduled and held Qualifying Events, while accommodating state regulations. Yes, we added some qualifying opportunities in the closing weeks on short notice and outside of normal policies. Yet our supporters, in an age where opinions and

debates run wild on social media, understood that this year was simply not normal and accepted and supported the decisions that were made without making a big deal of it.

To have it all come together in Caldwell, a beautiful area barely minutes off major byways, was simply amazing. The camaraderie was at the highest level, even when we needed to work around not having food at headquarters, and certain sponsors not attending. The Hilltop Beagle Club topped it off with their well-thought-out plan and organizing both private properties and the 50,000+ acres of game land nearby in a manner that kept casts off of each other and fresh spots to run for subsequent rounds.

Our most sincere thanks to Jeff Duvall, Trever McQuain, Curt Driggs and their team for organizing the hunting spots and run so smoothly. The same goes to Roy Swafford for handling the officiating portion, the Field Reps who are always willing and able, to all those who stuck around to judge in the semifinals and the final cast as well. Thanks also to the officers of the NHBA for all they bring to the Hunting Beagle program and to Tiffany Schmersal for judging the show, and most importantly our participants that showed up and showed out.

Congratulations to all the World Championship winners. We’re pumped and looking forward to next year!

Hunt Rules • Advanced entries must be postmarked by midnight

March 26, 2021. Walk-Up entries (based on available guides only) $50. A confirmation will be mailed to all entrants confirming entry. This confirmation is not needed to confirm entry at event.

• No refunds will be issued after the advanced entry deadline. Another dog registered to the same indi-vidual may be substituted for a female in season, a sick or injured dog. A veterinarian’s slip is required for sick and injured dogs.

• Entry fee of $30 payable to United Kennel Club must accompany each advanced hunt entry.

• Entries must be confirmed at the UKC headquarters desk.

• All hounds must be UKC Registered by the advanced entry deadline. It is acceptable for single registra-tion applications to accompany the advanced entry application.

• Format – All Registered hounds will be run on Friday. All Hunting Beagle Champions and Grand Hunting Beagle Champions will be run on Saturday.

• Hunt Time Periods - All rounds at the Nationals will be 60-minute hunts. The Chase on Thursday will have 90-minute hunts.

Bench Show Rules• Bench Show Deadline: Saturday at 11 a.m. • Entry fee of $15 per dog.• Only those hounds participating in the hunt with

a minimum of two cast wins will be eligible to be shown.

• The winner of the Grand Champion Class to earn degree of National Grand Show Champion.

There will be two separate series: one in the Hunting Beagle Format; and one in the Performance Pack format. Each series recognizes those junior and senior youth handlers in both the hunts and shows.Two Age Divisions• Junior Division: Youth Handlers who are 7 years old to 12 years old will earn points in the Junior Division.• Senior Division: Youth Handlers who are 13 years old to 17 years old will earn points in the Senior Division

The dog(s) they compete with in the hunt do not have to be the same dog(s) they compete with in the show. The dog they compete with is not required to be a dog that is registered to the youth as the owner.Points may be earned throughout the calendar year (January 1-December 31). Standings will be updated monthly and published on the UKC website and in American Beagler magazine. Youth Handler ResponsibilitiesWhenever a youth is handling more than two different dogs in a hunt or more than two different dogs in a show, it is the youth’s responsibility to clearly advise the entry takers, at the time of entry, which two dogs they are competing with for Series Points.Event Officials ResponsibilitiesIt is the responsibility of the event official (Master of Hounds and Bench Show Judge) to complete the First Strike Youth Series Results Form that is included with the Event Report. That form must be sent to UKC along with the Event Report. If there were no youth participating in the event that day, the event officials should indicate it as such on the form and include it with the Event Report regardless.Award WinnersAt the end of the year, there will be three winners recognized in each age division. The highest total net points earned will be the Gold Champion. The second highest total net points earned will be the Silver Champion. The third highest total net points earned will be the Bronze Champion. The winners will be recognized and receive their awards each year at the Beagle Nationals Awards Ceremony.

PURPOSEThe UKC Clash of Champions was developed for UKC hunting Beagles. It is the result of UKC and the

UKC Chartered National Hunting Beagle Association (NHBA), working together to offer Beagle hunters

a new pursuit and unparalleled prestige. NHBA will continues with their own Hound of the Year series.

The UKC Beagle Clash of Champions replaces the previous UKC year-long Beagle race, called the All-

Star Series. Enter: The UKC Clash of Champions! This hunt is designed to boost entries at local clubs

by requiring five cast wins at UKC Licensed Hunting Beagle Events to qualify. The payout is generated

through a $5 per dog event fee and the total payout is guaranteed by UKC. The Clash of Champions

program is herein further referred to as the COC.


ELIGIBILITY Dogs eligible for the COC are those that earned a minimum of five cast wins, towards the dogs’ UKC championship degree, throughout the previous calendar year. Cast wins may be earned at any UKC licensed Hunting Beagle Event. Dogs must be permanently registered with UKC to be eligible for entry to the COC.

REGIONAL RUNOFFS The first leg of the COC is the regional runoff. Qualified dogs may enter any one of the four strategically placed runoff locations, to be determined and announced later. Owners may select any region they choose to enter. All four regional runoffs will be held on the same weekend.

The regional runoff is an elimination format. Owners will have the option to enter in Round 1 (a) and or Round 1 (b), allowing handlers to handle multiple dogs. A cast win in Round 1 will count towards the dogs’ degree. A total score of plus points is not required to advance in any portion of the COC.

All entries for the COC are advanced entries only. Owners in good standing and who have paid their membership dues to the National Hunting Beagle Association (NHBA), for the qualifying calendar year, will receive a discounted entry fee of $25. Otherwise, the entry fee is $50. This entry fee covers the regionals all the way through the COC Finals. The NHBA’s top eight hounds in their final standings at the end of the calendar year are eligible for a first-round bye in the regional runoff.

Round 1 (a) and Round 1 (b) at the regions will be 90-minutes hunts. All subsequent rounds will be 60-minute hunts. A total score of plus points is not required to advance to any round.

Two telemetry systems, two dog boxes, and one jacket are awarded to the top four finishers in each of the four regions, provided by UKC and NHBA.

CLASH OF CHAMPIONS FINALSA total of 32 dogs will advance from the four regions to the COC Finals, to be held on Thursday at the UKC Hunting Beagle Nationals. The number of dogs advancing from each of the four regions is pro-rated, based on the total entry and the number of dogs entered in the region. EXAMPLE: A region with 80 dogs entered will advance

twice as many to the finals as compared to a region with 40 entries.

Each round will be a 90-minute hunt with non-hunting judges. A total score of plus points is not required to advance to a subsequent round. Round 2 will feature braces in each of the four casts. A cast win in Round 1 will count towards the dogs’ degree. 2022 PAYOUTA grand total of $35,000 is guaranteed to be paid out to those 32 hounds advancing to the Clash of Champions (COC) Finals as follows:

ENTRY INFORMATIONA UKC Clash of Champions Invitation is mailed to the first named owner of a dog who has earned five cast wins during the same calendar year, after the qualifying year and all wins are processed by UKC. The Invitation will include instructions for the owner to complete and submit an official entry to UKC, along with the entry fee, for entry into the UKC Clash of Champions. Advanced entries only are accepted. The official entry form will note the deadline entry date for the event.

To enter the 2022 UKC Clash of Champions, the entrant for each qualified Beagle must:

• Submit a completed Official UKC Clash of Champions Entry Form

• Pay the entry fee• Be in good standing with UKC• Be a resident of the United States

Entry fees are non-refundable with the following exceptions: a written statement received by UKC from the owner on or before the Region Event date, reporting; 1) a deceased dog; 2) injured dog (must include vet statement); or 3) a female in season.

SCORING QUESTIONS, RULINGS AND APPEALSAll handlers are held to the procedures and timelines, as outlined in the UKC Hunting Beagle Rulebook, when questioning a judge’s call or a call


that was not made. The portion of that procedure which states; {Situations not questioned and notated at the time Judge’s decision is made, will not be considered}, will be enforced with no exceptions. By entering the UKC Clash of Champions, you agree to abide by these rules and decisions of any ruling made by the Master of Hounds, which will be determined in UKC’s sole discretion. Failure to comply with any published rule is grounds for immediate disqualification.
