Dear All

On Tuesday this week we enjoyed some great weather for our Sports Day, perfect for spectators and competitors alike. Some great performances and closely fought battles on track and f ield saw the House competit ion reach a f itt ing conclusion. Having led the competit ion for a good deal of the year, Warkworth were pipped to the post by Alnwick who performed superbly on Sports Day. Congratulations then to Alnwick, who are our House Champions for the second year running.

We have had a group of Year 7 students enjoying the Lake District this week during their stay at High Borrans, and taking part in a variety of outdoor activit ies, overground, underground and on the water. During my visit there on Wednesday it was wonderful to see the children making good progress with their climbing skills as we made an ascent of Side Pike (the scrambling route), before experiencing the beauty of pitch dark in the caves of Litt le Langdale quarries. We have also had a trip to France this week, giving our young people an opportunity to experience dif ferent culture and practice their language skills. With both of these trips, it is good to know that the students have been challenging themselves, and it is always good to see their sense of satisfaction and achievement at succeeding in tasks that they init ially thought they might be unable to do. As ever, with all our educational trips, it is the dedication and commitment of our staff which make these experiences possible, and a huge thanks goes to them for that.

Overall it has been a great Activit ies Week, with one of the key outcomes of this very varied week being the development of teamwork, and it has been wonderful to see students and staff working together in small groups to create quite unique learning, sporting and personal development opportunities. A great way to f inish the year!

Thank you again to everyone who contributed to make the Summer Fayre a big success. There was a huge amount of organisation and preparation going on behind the scenes in the build up to the event which helped to make it such a success, and this was another example of that fabulous Marden teamwork. The total prof it made on the night was £972.64, with the two highest earning stalls being the Sponge the Teacher stall (unsurprisingly!), and the cake stall. Well done to all.

In our recent Awards Assemblies we were able to give out record numbers of bronze, silver and gold award certif icates, in addition to all the Form Tutor, Head of Year and Headteacher Awards. During these assemblies I asked all of our young people to ref lect on what each of them has achieved this year, and on what opportunities each of them has taken. I would like all our young people to think about the opportunities they would like to take next year, how they would like to develop themselves, and what they would like to achieve. We will be there to help them realise these goals.

I will introduce several new staff faces to you in September, but for now I would like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to those leaving us at the end of this term. Mrs Noble will be retiring this summer after many years of committed service to our students, and we wish her all the best in her new adventures. We also see Miss Gibson, Mr Thomas, Miss Brown, Miss Aslam and Mr Robertson move on to pastures new, and we hope that they all enjoy their new roles.

We are looking forward to the exam results in August and f inding out how our year 11 students have faired. They have certainly worked hard towards them and we are now hoping for great results. This has been a very successful year overall, with students and staff all continuing to work hard towards providing the best opportunities and achieving the best outcomes for our young people, some examples of which you can enjoy reading about in our half-termly newsletter.

I hope that everyone has a lovely summer, and we look forward to seeing all our students back on Tuesday 3rd September. Thank you for all your support this year.

Mr M. Snape

Drama

Another amazing term in Creative Ar ts! We are ver y proud of the creative achievements of Marden High School students this term.

It?s been a busy term for the drama cur r iculum w ith key stage 3 students enjoying learning new ski l ls as they explore ?Our Day Out?, ?TWOC? and the topic of Diver si ty. There have been many examples of excellent work throughout the term ranging from imaginative character isations to challenging physical theatre pieces.

Now that our Year 11 students have left us, our focus is upon Year 10 as they prepare for their devised per formances 11 July. The per formances took place as par t of the summer fayre and al l were welcomed. I t was great to see what our talented young people had to offer !

Our Key Stage 3 drama club w i l l continue to r un each Monday after school next term, w ith our new year 10 Prefects leading the way. We?re looking for ward to welcoming new members and making new fr iendships along the way.

On Tuesday 2 July, we hosted Marden?s Got Talent and once again our students wowed the audience w ith an evening ful l of hula hoop tr icks, magic, comedy and music. I t?s safe to say that Marden tr uly does have talent!

Who Got Gr i f f i ths?

English

As par t of their Sher lock Holmes uni t of work, Year 8 English students were given the task of becoming detectives themselves to solve this year?s ?Marden She Wrote? case...Who Got Griffiths?

The uni t star ted whereby students found out that a member of staff had brutal ly poisoned Ms Gr i f f i ths. Students were then given a selection of suspects from the English depar tment and motives and had to use their Sher lock style inference and deduction ski l ls to tr y to pick the culpr i t - but did they succeed?

Page 13: MARDEN NEWS - Amazon Web Servicessmartfile.s3.amazonaws.com/ac964574086e5480e4c7c68968bc1... · 2019-08-06 · Marden High School Newsletter July 2019 Community, Individuality, Possibility

Students had a number of interesting hypotheses: did Mrs Todd?s passion for makeup motivate her to enviously lace Ms Gr i f f i ths? signature r ed l ipstick w ith something? Does Ms Arnold?s w itness statement al luding to fr iction between Mr Horn and ?power hungr y? Ms Gr i f f i ths suggest that Mr Horn?s anger got the better of him? Was Mrs Cathcar t?s snack obsession and fr equent baking habit where the poisoned i tem hid? It was a myster y!

Year 8 student Katie Roll presented a statement of events to her classroom cour troom per fectly when putting Mrs Cathcar t on tr ial:

?First, let us all imagine: imagine going to work as normal, to work hard but never going back home again. Imagine doing your normal morning routine, but today your routine is not the same. Imagine receiving hand delivered cruel notes from students with disturbing messages on them. Imagine sitting at your wooden desk and your throat closing up and your heart visibly pounding, gasping for air.

Imaging taking your last breath and never breathing again. Ms Griffiths did not imagine any of this; it really happened to her. This is the painful fate met by the innocent victim Ms Griffiths. Her murderer over in the dock is the sinister, calculating but guilty Mrs Cathcart. She was driven by her lust and desire for more power and control in the English department and Ms Griffiths was an obstacle to those dreams? ?

Katie presented a power ful argument presenting Mrs Cathcar t as the key suspect: but is Mrs Cathcar t the obvious choice?

Overal l this was an incredibly enjoyable and successful uni t and produced some spectacular pieces of cr ime w r i ting and drama.

Marden English now have the task of creating 2019/2020?s instal lment; who w i l l be our next victim?

But the question on ever yone?s mind - who did i t? Well, i t?s di f f icult to question the dead...

Ms Cathcar t

HISTORY

Year 9s have been explor ing the impact of The Bli tz in the Nor th of England.

Some chose to focus on the exper iences of evacuees, especial ly to Alnw ick, some discovered their ow n family's exper iences, and others investigated the economic benefi ts to companies such as for the Armstrong Factor y.

Many chose to focus on the bomb that destroyed Wilkinson's Lemonade Factor y in Nor th Shields.

On May 3rd 1941 a single German Bomb dir ectly hi t the factor y, ki l l ing 107 of the 192 people who were using the factor y as an air r aid shelter.

This was the highest death tol l from a single bomb in WW2! 5 Nor th Shields famil ies were completely w iped out, and many were chi ldren.

You can see the impact of this bomb on the land use in this par t of Nor th Shields today, as the bui ldings are al l newer than the Victor ian ter r aced housing that sur rounds i t.

I f you'd l ike to know more about this devastating night, you can f ind out more at nor thshields173.org Emma Guy inter viewed her grandpa who was 9 at the time of the bombing - a thought provoking and l i fe aff i rming inter view about the power of communities to pul l together , and a r eal ly useful piece of pr imar y r esearch.

Year 8 have been bui lding upon their programming ski l ls

by learning how to create websites in HTML. Students

have demonstrated their talents in using a r ange of

techniques, such as inser ting images, hyper l inks, tables, l ists

and using formatting to enhance the style, including

the advanced ski l l of CSS.

Students were logging their development and understanding in a journal. An excellent example can be seen here on the left produced by Cady Leigh-Herdman.

Year 9 have been combining their python programming, websi te

design, spreadsheet and graphics ski l ls by working on a Summer

Music Festival project. They are working in teams to plan a festival

and create a website, ticket booking system and a r ange of

promotional mater ials.

They al l took on a role which played to their str engths.

The projects culminated in a presentation of their work. Some of the presentations can be seen below. All work was documented in a journal.

Examples of some fantastic r esearch can be seen, produced by Florence Springle and Elle Grayson. An impor tant par t of the project was to gain feedback, al low ing the students to

make ref inements to their work.

Ms Parker

The students had to go through a process of r esearching, designing and then implementing, gaining feedback and making improvements throughout.

The year 9 maths ambassadors got to f lex their mathematical muscle when deliver ing the lessons they had planned to our new intake for next year. The students working on this project have gained confidence and their lessons went dow n a storm w ith the year 6 students.

This term several teams of Year 7 and Year 8 students have had the exci ting oppor tuni ty to par take in workshops organised by Procter and Gamble.

These have centred around their global ?50L home? project which focuses on the creation of appliances and environments which help l imit water usage to help sustainabi l i ty by aiming to make each person use only 50L of water per day (a lot less than i t sounds!).

Five teams from Marden have created their ow n submissions for the project, w i th examples including a grey water home system, handheld micro-droplet hair -brush to wash your hair w i th and comprehensive plans including looking at the pipes needed to tr anspor t water vast distances. They r ecently presented to parents and each other and have al l been invi ted to present to senior staff at P&G before the end of term w ith the presentations accompanying a guided tour of the innovation centre.

This is the thir d year we have been invi ted to par ticipate in the program w ith Procter and Gamble and we look for ward to continued success for our students w ith these STEM oppor tuni ties and encourage any interested students to keep their eyes on the Maths depar tment for information about future events.

Mr Mushen

Chr is Calver Head of Education at Rapid Electronics has praised al l competi tor s saying "I?d l ike to thank you and your students for attending the introductor y Airgineers competi tion at Nissan last week and for making i t such an enjoyable day. I was ver y conscious that we had not been able to del iver the same level of tr aining that we have done in other areas and so for the bui ld and pi loting standards to be so high was really good to see."

Mr Mushen has praised the commitment, dedication and team spir i t of the students from Marden High. "Al l those who wanted to f ly the drone on the day were given the oppor tuni ty to do so, unl ike some of the other teams, where only their best pi lot competed in the 'capture the f lag' events." He also added that almost al l the preparation, bui lding and problem solving was done by the students, and said "I decided from the outset that this project was to be dr iven by the students themselves and that they should take ow nership of al l aspects of the design, bui ld, commissioning and f lying of the micro drone."

A group of dedicated year 9 and 10 students attended the Airgineers Drone Challenge at Nissan on the 3rd July to compete against 20 nor th east schools in the inaugural event sponsored by Nissan Ski l ls Academy and Rapid Electronics. The major i ty of the r esources w ith the exception of the drone body and camera mount were supplied by Rapid.

Despite joining the competi tion late w ith no advanced drone know ledge or ski l ls, and w ith design and prep time l imited to a weekly after school club session the team did ver y well coming a r espectable 7th out of 20.
