LENTEN MESSAGE OF OUR HOLY FATHER FRANCIS 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As Lent draws near, I would like to offer some helpful thoughts on our path of conversion as individuals and as a community. These insights are inspired by the words of St. Paul: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Cor. 8-9). ……. May this Lenten season find the whole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ. May the Lord bless you and our Lady keep you safe. From the Vatican, 26 December 2013

FRANCISCUS

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, we know more about the beginnings of Lent than our ancestors did. We know that Lent is first of all about bap sm, and secondly that it is about the desire of all the bap zed to renew the power and poten al of that sacrament at Easter. For centuries, this deep truth was largely obscured, but today documents have come to light to reshape the Church’s thinking and prac ce. One source, discovered in the 1880s, is the pilgrim diary of a Spanish nun, Egeria, wri ng her sisters a detailed travelogue of a fourth-century sojourn in Jerusalem during Holy Week. She describes in vivid detail her par cipa on in liturgies that are close cousins of our own Holy Week prayer, from a fes ve procession with palms to a procession to the cross. Her greatest delight is in the huge number of elect: men, women, and children who experience a me of deep retreat and iden fica on with Christ’s cross, guided by the bishop and supported by their godparents’ constant nurture. The discovery of Egeria’s diary proved to be a moment of grace for the Church; a er a long period of “ecclesial amnesia,” we know at last that bap sm is really the work of a whole community of faith, convened by God. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LENTEN REFLECTION At Maria Regina Church

The annual observance of Lent is the special season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Catechumens are led to the sacraments of initiation by means of the rite of election, the scrutinies, and catechesis. The faithful, listening more intently to the word of God and devoting themselves to prayer, are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew their baptismal promises. (Ceremony of Bishops, 249). You are welcome to reflect on the Lenten Sunday Readings with Sister Ugocha Chukwuleta every Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM –8:00 PM. The class begins from March 11, 2014. Please register soon so that we can prepare for you. Thanks. Please return this portion to the parish office. Together In Mission 2014 Follow Up

Maria Regina Church Goal $32,391.88

On the weekend of February 23 we had our Commitment Sunday. There were 221 families who signed pledges towards the goal of $32,391.88 It is our hope that we will receive a pledge form From all active households in our community. If you did not sign a pledged form, please do so today. Would you consider faithfully, a pledge of $60.00 per family? This way, the burden will be light for each family to donate. If we have 500 pledges, we would make our goal complete. May God reward your generosity.
