A competition sited in the downtown of Sudbury Ontario calls for the design of a school of architecture. Our design, named Fissure, is focused on the formation and exchange of ideas. The perimeter spaces of the building are places where ideas are conceived, developed, and executed. The interstitial and interior spaces within the building are where ideas are exchanged. From formal critiques to informal conver-sations, these spaces have been designed to provide opportunities for a variety of exchanges.

Thesis : 80 Fathoms Deep

THE HISTORY OF NEWFOUND-LAND is intimately tied to its relation-ship with the sea, to its island status and its consequent cultural isolation, to its reliance on fishing and more recently oil. It is also one of tides - of prosperity and loss, migration and resettlement, of occu-pation and erasure. This research is an investigation into the nature of mutable landscapes – shifting settlements, resources and infrastruc-tures. It is recognized that the needs of each community and the resources of each environment are diverse in type and supply. These stories outline the historical spatialization of Newfoundland’s popula-tion, infrastructures, and economies - pre-senting the history as a fluctuating story of the sea. They also simultaneously out-line the various social and economic de-ficiencies of modern development. Struc-tured chronologically, the research forms the basis for an investigation into new ideas for an infrastructure off the south-ern coast of Newfoundland.

The discovery of oil within the Grand Banks marked a shift in their economic focus away from cod and in the direction of oil. However, Newfoundland remains dependent on a mono-economy and the social deficiencies remain. It becomes clear that the issues behind the difficulties this province faces is not a singular but a layered series of causes and effects. The speculated infrastructure addresses this multiplicity while still sustainably capital-izing on the sea. It may also seek financial leverage from the oil industries as a form of royalties to the province of Newfound-land.This investigation tests the possibility for a contemporary energy and monitor-ing system to become a physically and culturally pronounced manifestation of a layered historical narrative. It has the opportunity to link the ecological, politi-cal, cultural, and historical constituents in atomized communities while working as a dynamic system that responds to their needs and demands.

This design project exemplifies themes of shifting and movement through a mobile energy, and research infrastructure. It is situated off the southern coast of New-foundland and engages both the land and the seas. This thesis does not try to tame, resolve, or control the sea. The sea is always it-self, ordered by its own cycles of tides, currents and ecologies. One can only syn-chronize the relationships between the land and the sea.

Project : Canadian Biennale GalleryTerm : Fourth year 2008

Situated between the river, city paths and sidewalks, the building serves as a con-nector within the urban fabric of the city of Cambridge. Arts and entertainment can be facilitated within building and its public space ranging from open-air art exhibits to to double height spaces to en-closed exhibition rooms. The buildings core provides the seperation between two types of space: The introverted east blocks the views to the outside traffic and the extroverted west provides a panoram-ic view of historial downtown beyond the Grand River. The Gallery’s intention is to become the ultimate public building with the pedestrian network through the river parks slicing through the gallery functions.

Project surrounded a pedestrian network through the West Donlands. A previous project outlines the Urban design of the entire area including the implementation of a GO Train station. The pedestrian path connects residential through the sta-tion through to the cultural centre at the mouth of the Don River.

At the busy intersection of King and Spa-dina in Toronto, our task was to design a hotel. At such an eclectic and visually confusing site, the building plays with-perspectives within the building and out to the surroundings.
