A SHOW IN URBAN NATURE

Ocean waves, surf, whirlpools. Floral oases in the city. Familiar classics and new patterns. Marimekko’s spring collection show was held in an old oil silo that had been

converted into a stunning light installation outside Helsinki.

Guests braved choppy seas and a brisk wind as they arrived at the show by boat from Helsinki’s Market Square. Trees

swayed in the wind, waves splashed on the shoreline, stalks of grass lay pressed against the ground. Nature

showed its strength as the guests were transported to the collection’s wellspring of inspiration.

Inside the oil silo, the mood turned to quiet calm. Drawing on blue skies, cool sand and fluttering sunlight, the

collection painted a nature-inspired mindscape – a peaceful retreat from the rush of everyday life.

Abundant tropical vegetation and all its intriguing details, sounds and smells were

the starting point for the Kangastus print. The designer wanted to create a pattern that

reflects the light and shadows of the jungle that enable one to hide or to be seen.

The initial idea for the Hula hula pattern came from crashing ocean waves, but its swirling forms and

feeling of movement reminded the designer of hula hoops. That’s where the print got its name from.

COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US

SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF?

I’m a 35-year-old New Yorker, by way of Texas, Germany, London, and San Francisco, who loves the outdoors, city life, music, and the arts. I grew up in a small town in Texas on the Mexican border and spent every summer with my grandmother and cousins in southern Louisiana and New Orleans.

I loved the canyons behind my childhood home and the bayous of Louisiana, and my parents always encouraged me to play outside, to explore, and to create. They also made sure my brother and I were grateful for the opportunities that we had and instilled a desire to always pay it forward and give back. Their outlook on life has always stayed with me whether in my pursuit of music, my time as an exchange student in Germany and later as a graduate student at The London School of Economics, or the time I spend on the streets of New York on my bike.

IN 2013, YOU FOUNDED EXPLORING PATHS,

AN ORGANISATION DEDICATED TO WORKING

WITH URBAN YOUTH. WHAT WAS YOUR

INSPIRATION? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

The inspiration behind Exploring Paths came to me from several directions – the young people I mentored in NYC through another amazing organisation called New Alternatives for Children, my love of cycling as a way to explore, decompress and just let go, and a friend who showed me the beautiful paths in and around Manhattan.

For a few years I pursued these interests separately. But one day, during a particularly exhausting time at work, I talked with a co-worker and she encouraged me to start my own business. It was the perfect opportunity to merge my experience in non-profit management and

business coaching with my desire to build something meaningful. Within five minutes of that conversation I purchased the website for Exploring Paths and over the next few months worked hard to get the organisation on the right path.

Exploring Paths’ idea is simple yet important. Combine consistent access to the active lifestyle of cycling with one-on-one mentorship, journaling and exploring nature. I want young people to step back, have fun, stay fit and explore where their own life paths may lead. So far we have had amazing success with our partnership with the YMCA and Citi Bike and are continuing to expand throughout New York – with more cities to come!

IN YOUR OPIN ION, WHY IS ‘NATURE’ SUCH A

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR URBAN YOUTH?

Nature allows you to step away and feel a silence and a calmness that can be hard to find in the hustle and bustle of an urban city. It provides space to move around freely. New York and other urban environments are amazing places, yet being able to step back or outside and recharge is key to maintaining the constant on-the-go and competitive lifestyle that fuels these cities.

Mindscape is a metaphorical landscape of thoughts and feelings.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE

YOUR FAVOURITE MINDSCAPE?

My mindscape is one of tranquillity: it’s memories of fun moments on the beach laughing with friends or with my brother growing up running up and down the hills around our house with all the smells and bright colours

of the outdoors, it’s the calmness and the rhythm of the water hitting against the shore under the Williamsburg Bridge with the beautiful architecture running across the water.

It’s feelings of happiness and total freedom on the bike and the peace above the crowds while I sit in a hammock reading a book on my fire escape. My favourite mindscape would be a reflection of all of these thoughts and feelings.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT

INSPIRE YOU EVERY DAY?

One of the most amazing parts of living in New York is being constantly surrounded by the city’s bright colours and incredible diversity of people and experiences. You can enjoy so much during one bike ride – art, music, beautiful parks, and people just helping each other!

When I’m working with young people, I love seeing the spark of curiosity in their eyes and listening to the questions they pose. All of these things give me hope and inspire me to create and live out my own dreams.

WHAT ROLE DOES DES IGN HAVE

IN YOUR DAILY L IFE?

Design is an essential part of my life. It shows up in the clothes I choose to wear and how comfortable or productive I am in my home. Because I’m a very visual person, colours impact my mood immensely and help me convey my own feelings. I

especially love bright colours and fun things. I feel that life is meant to be enjoyed with a playful spirit.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER MARIMEKKO?

I discovered Marimekko through friends and fell in love with the colours and the patterns and the feelings that they inspire.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ‘ALL-TIME’

MARIMEKKO PAT TERN OR PRODUCT?

I absolutely love Marimekko’s dresses for work and play. If I had to narrow it down to a particular pattern, it would be a tie between the classic Pieni Unikko (small poppy) in pink and the Siirtolapuutarha (city garden) with the pinks, blues and yellows.

WHAT MARIMEKKO PRODUCT/DES IGN

WOULD YOU TAKE ON A CYCLING TR IP?

I already cycle around Manhattan in many of my Marimekko dresses! And I’d love to design some amazing bike helmets with some of those patterns.

I work as a décor and lifestyle stylist in Japan. I also write articles and books about my work and interests. My big passion is cooking and ceramics.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU IN L IFE?

To live honestly with myself. To trust my own senses.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE

YOUR PERSONAL MINDSCAPE?

The warm memories I have from my childhood. My mother baking a cake and or sewing clothes for me. Even now as an adult, I love how those moments were full of happiness and carefree joy.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Everything! It can be the time you spend with family and friends, simple everyday routines or something completely unexpected.

HOW DOES DES IGN AFFECT

YOUR DAILY L IFE?

Home is where I relax and get inspired. That’s why I want to be surrounded by good design. Good design makes me feel good about myself and my environment.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT MARIMEKKO?

While I prefer simple design in my home, I love using Marimekko to spice things up. Colourful prints have always made feel happy. In this spring’s collection, I really like the cushion covers in the Merivuokko (sea anemone) pattern by Kustaa Saksi. They help you start the day on a positive note.

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO

CREATING A BEAUTIFUL AND

HARMONIOUS TABLE SET TING?

I think the best way to create the perfect table setting is to live in the moment and trust your feelings. I also pay close attention to the seasons and the weather. At the same time I’m looking for new ways to mix things up. You can always combine new and retro styles of design to create unique textures and memorable experiences. I want my table setting to make even the most ordinary meal fresh, exciting and different.

Kustaa Saksi became inspired by the colours and atmosphere of the underwater world while diving in Vietnam.

The Merivuokko pattern depicts the depth of the sea and the rhythm of the abstract forms of aquatic organisms.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF

I’m a Finnish artist and designer. I’ve lived and worked in Amsterdam for the last seven years. Before that, I lived in Paris for four years. In my work, I focus on graphic storytelling through pattern design, textile art and installations. Many of my patterns are motivated by an abstract interpretation of natural forms. My goal is to activate the viewer’s imagination. In addition to my artistic projects, I do original work for international fashion houses, media and entertainment companies, as well as design agencies. Whenever I’m in Finland, I enjoy sitting on a veranda after a sauna and gazing at the sea.

WHAT HAVE YOU DES IGNED FOR MARIMEKKO’S

2015 SPR ING COLLECTIONS?

For the interior collection, I created the Merivuokko (sea anemone) and Meriheinä (seagrass) patterns. I’ve wanted to cooperate with Marimekko for a long time and now it felt like the right moment to do something together.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND

MERIVUOKKO AND MERIHEINÄ?

I was diving in Vietnam at the beginning of the design process and wanted to convey that unique underwater mood in the collection. I was inspired by the floating motion of aquatic forms, the repeating patterns on the surface of different animals and plants, the psychedelic colour schemes, and the way sunlight penetrates through the surface water and reveals the hiding places of strange underwater creatures. The patterns are designed to be combined and both are printed in slightly different colour combinations.

The Kangastus (mirage) and Boordi (border) patterns were inspired by the dense jungles on tropical islands, where heat and humidity play with your senses. They’re modern and abstract jungle patterns that let you blend into urban environments.

SPR ING COLLECTIONS IS MINDSCAPES.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MINDSCAPE?

We all have our own favourite mindscape, which is often inspired by familiar places from our childhood. These mindscapes create a safe and peaceful mood and help us escape the hurry and rush of life. My own favourite is by the seashore – a quiet place of solace next to a large boulder.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE

MARIMEKKO DES IGN OR PRODUCT?

My favourite Marimekko design is a hoodie I inherited from my father. It’s from the 1960s and is perfect for trips into the forest, because mosquitoes can’t get through the tightly woven fabric.

ARMI ALIVE! – A FILM ABOUT

MARIMEKKO’S FOUNDER

Jörn Donner, the producer of Ingmar Bergman’s Academy Award-winning film Fanny and

Alexander, has directed a fictional film about Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko. The film had

its world premiere at the Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK

14–19 APRIL 2015

Marimekko’s home collection for autumn 2015 will be showcased at the Milan Design Week in April.

The collection is inspired by urban architecture and rhythms. The pattern designs combine layers of time

with natural elements, creating moments of peace and respite amid the rush of everyday life.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

The first aircraft in Finnair’s fleet to be decorated with Marimekko’s classic Unikko (poppy) print took to the skies

in 2012. Two years later, at the end of 2014, a sister aircraft with the same iconic pattern rolled down the runway. The

new Anniversary Unikko livery features bigger flowers and a previously unseen colourway designed exclusively for Finnair.

The plane flies from Helsinki to Finnair’s long-haul destinations. Passengers can also enjoy textiles and tableware with

Marimekko print patterns on all Finnair flights.
