For the Championship

CRICKET Cricket Match Report College vs St Charles (Goldstones) (Limited to 50 overs) College won the toss and elected to bat on an overcast morning where the ball would swing initially. Kewan Harries and Josh Rencken were superb in putting on 137 runs for the first wicket. This fell in the 27th over when a misunderstanding led to the run out of Rencken, but not before he had gone to his maiden half century on Goldstones - his 55 runs coming off 85 deliveries. Gareth Orr joined Harries and they added 40 runs before Orr (12 off 24 balls) was caught in the 34th over with the total on 177/2. Calvin Savage scored a quick 24 off 25 balls before he was trapped in front trying to sweep. (223/3 after 42 overs). At this stage the College innings lost some momentum with the fall of Grant Glutz (8 off 7 balls) and then Harries, who had scored a second consecutive century, ending on 121 runs off 130 balls! (238/4 and 248/5 after after 46 overs). The last 4 overs bowled by the now tired St Charles attack went for 56 runs with some lusty hitting by Tim Guise-Brown (21* off 20 balls) and Greg Miller (20* off 13 balls), coupled with some extras thrown in for good measure, helping College to a total of 290/5 after 50 overs, and their highest total of the year! After lunch the pitch flattened out considerably, Sclanders and Robinson came out to bat and they added 95 runs for the first wicket which fell 3 balls after the tea interval, Daryn Dupavillon castling Sclanders for 58 scored off 82 balls. Robinson (30 off 79 balls) followed shortly thereafter when Savage hurried the St Charles opener, with Glutz taking the catch at backward point. (105/2 after 29 overs). Captain Ford lasted all of 14 deliveries for his 7 runs as Dupavillon and Savage pinned him back before he was well-caught by Savage off the bowling of Guise-Brown with the total on 105/3 after 30 overs. Moses joined Inderjith and after struggling for 8 deliveries Moses hit a low Orr full toss into the hands of Dupavillon without scoring.(114/4 after 31 overs). With the weather starting to close in and the ball becoming quite slippery, Inderjith cashed in and scored 28 off 23 balls before Glutz held on to a return catch off his own bowling with the total on 140/5 after 36 overs. With 13 overs remaining and College clearly in the driving seat, St Charles needing to score 147 runs off 79 balls at a rate of 11 to the over, the umpires pulled the players from the field and no further play took place thereafter. There was no doubt that the College XI had outplayed their opposition in every department and that St Charles were never going to chase down the mammoth target that College had set them. What a pity that, for the second consecutive year, College had been frustrated by the weather, when they had dominated from start to finish. College 290/5 in 50 overs (K.Harries 121; J.Rencken 55) St Charles 143/5 in 36,5 overs Match drawn –rain stopped play.

Mitchell Deetlefs Outgoing Rotary Exchange AMitchell Deetlefs Outgoing Rotary Exchange AMitchell Deetlefs Outgoing Rotary Exchange AMitchell Deetlefs Outgoing Rotary Exchange Ambassadormbassadormbassadormbassador Mitchell Deetlefs a Gr12 pupil of Maritzburg Collage has been selected as 1 of 8, by Rotary International District 9270 committee to be an ambassador for the District which comprises Kwa-Zulu Natal and part of the Eastern Cape. His sending Rotary Club is the Rotary Club of Azalea Pietermaritzburg. Mitchell will be attending a school in Minneapolis Minnesota, USA, and hosted by the Rotary Club of a Lakes Minneapolis. The exchange is a yearlong program during which time he will be required to speak at Rotary meetings, schools and other functions to promote South Africa, KZN and PMB in particular. He will be hosted by 3 – 4 different families during his stay there. Mitchell will also get the opportunity to travel on organized tours throughout the States, get to see and partake in many new and exciting activities. The aim of the Rotary youth exchange program is for our youth to get a better understanding of other cultures and countries. It is also to encourage and promote goodwill and better understanding between countries and young people of these countries and to build and cement lifelong friendships. President Tubby Climpson of the Rotary Club Of Azalea says “The experiences and opportunities that he will have on this exchange will remain with him for the rest of his life” he went on to say that” we see young adults ‘still kids’ leave us and on their return 12 months later we are always amazed to see confident adults that are prepared both mentally and physically to take on the world.” “The rotary Youth Exchange program is by far the best “gap” year that any youngster could ask for, it is a professionally run, organized and arranged program, and parents sending their children on Exchange can be assured that their child will be in a secure and controlled environment. Both the parents and the child go through a series of interviews to insure that all the criteria are met. These are then followed by two or three orientations to prepare the children on their arrival in foreign country. The Rotary youth exchange program is also offered as a 6 week programme, for any further enquires about this wonderful program, you could make contact with your local Rotary Club or visit www.rotary.org.za/azalea to find the relevant contact details, the next interviews will take place early in 2012. Don’t delay - get your child’s name on the list at his/her school by the end of January 2012!”
