SAN DIEGO PADRES (50-53) RHP Odrisamer Despaigne (4-7, 4.76) vs. MIAMI MARLINS (42-61) RHP Jose Ureña (1-4, 4.04) MARLINS PARK, MIAMI, FL Saturday, August 1, 2015 – 7:10 P.M. FISH BITES The Marlins will try to snap a four-game losing streak to the Padres when the Clubs meet for game two of this three- game set tonight at 7:10 p.m. Miami will send right-hander Jose Ureña, recalled from Triple-A New Orleans yesterday, to the mound for his first start since June 28 vs. the Dodgers. Urena is 1-4 with a 4.04 ERA in nine appearances (seven starts) during his debut campaign, and has yet to face the Friars. San Diego counters with righty Odrisamer Despaigne, who made his first career start against the Marlins last Sunday at Petco Park, getting the win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing one run on two hits, two walks, and a hit batter, with three strikeouts. The Marlins are 1-3 on this homes- tand after dropping a midweek set to Washington (1-2), and will conclude the ‘stand with three games against the Mets (August 3-5). Today’s National Anthem will be performed by Rody Lafrance, and ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by Salt-N-Pepa, who are also performing a postgame concert on the West Plaza. VS. THE PADRES Miami has dropped four straight games to the Friars and trails the season series after dropping this series opener last night and three of four games in a set last weekend in San Diego. The Marlins are 2-8 against the Padres since having a five-game winning streak against them snapped on April 6 of last season. San Diego leads the all-time series, 90-80, and is 47-42 in South Florida, but is just 4-7 at Marlins Park. TRANSACTIONS The Marlins today optioned C Tomas Telis to Triple-A New Orleans and recalled left-handed pitchers Adam Conley and Chris Reed (#35) from NOLA. HEART & HUSTLE PRESENTATION Dee Gordon, who was named Miami’s 2015 Heart & Hustle Award winner earlier this week, will be presented with his award by Marlins’ Special Assistant Jeff Conine in an on-field ceremony prior to tonight’s game. It is the second Heart & Hustle Award for Gordon, who was the Dodgers’ preliminary winner in 2014. The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will announce the final winner from this year’s group of 30 preliminary winners on Tuesday, November 10 th at the 16 th annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York City. RAISE A PINT TO A RARE FEAT Left-handed reliever Chris Reed, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans by the Marlins today, will make his Ma- jor League debut when he makes his first appearance for the Fish. Reed was born in London, England, but his family moved back to the United States when he was a year old. Should Reed make an appearance with the Fish, he will be- come the first player born in England to play in a Major League game since pitcher Phil Stockman (Oldham, England) on June 11, 2008 for Atlanta at the Cubs. According to Elias, there have been 30 players born in England to appear in the Majors, but only four who debuted since 1970, all pitchers: Danny Cox, Paul Marak, Lance Painter, and Stockman. Reed played for Great Britain in the 2013 World Baseball Classic qualifying round, making one start and going 0-1; he allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks, with two strikeouts, in 2.2 innings in an 11-1 loss to Canada. LAST NIGHT The Marlins tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a solo home run by Derek Dietrich, but the Padres rallied for five runs in the 11 th to take an 8-3 victory. Miami staked out a 2-0 lead in the first when Dee Gordon walked and Christian Yelich homered to straightaway center two batters later. San Diego cut the lead in half with a run in the third, then took a 3-2 lead with a pair in the fourth. Yelich and Adeiny Hechavarria each finished with two of Miami’s five hits, with Dietrich’s homer accounting for the final hit. NOT EXTRA SPECIAL The Marlins gave up five runs to the Padres in the 11 th inning last night in an 8-3 loss. It was just the fourth time in Club his- tory that Miami has allowed five-or-more runs in an extra inning, the first since surrendering six to the Braves in the top of the 14 th on July 8, 2013, in a 7-1 loss. The Marlins also allowed five on September 17, 2006, in the top of the 10 th inning in Atlanta in an 8-7 loss, a game in which the Fish had scored four times in the top of the frame. The first time it happened in Club history was May 5, 1998 vs. San Francisco, when the Giants scored six times in the top of the 10 th in an 8-2 loss. WAITING ‘TIL THE LAST SECOND The Marlins got a two-out, game-tying solo home run from Derek Dietrich in the ninth inning last night. It was the Marlins’ first game-tying ninth-inning home run since Giancarlo Stanton hit one off of Rafael Soriano on July 13, 2013 vs. Wash- ington; that blast led off the frame and tied the game at 1-1, with the Fish going on to win, 2-1, in 10 innings. Dietrich was the first Marlins’ player to do it with two outs since Gaby Sanchez on July 4, 2012 at Milwaukee in a 6-5 game that Miami won, 7-6, in 10 innings. It was the second such home run for Dietrich in his career, as he also hit one on May 25, 2013 at the White Sox off of Jake Peavy; the one-out solo shot tied the game at 1-1, but Miami suffered a 2-1 loss on a walk-off single in the bottom of the frame. Of Dietrich’s 20 career home runs, seven have put the Marlins ahead, and six have tied the game. PLUMMETING FOR THE BETTER Jose Ureña, who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans yesterday, is making his eighth start (10 th appearance) of the season tonight. He made his Major League de- but out of the bullpen on April 14 at Atlanta, and in his first four outings (two starts) went 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA (13.2 ip/11 er). In his final five starts before being optioned back to NOLA on July 1, however, Ureña went 1-2 with a 2.51 ERA (28.2/8), allowing two-or-fewer runs four times, and allowing just one run in three of the outings. His season ERA dipped from 7.24 to 4.04 in that time (-3.20). DULL JULY FIREWORKS, BUT LIVELY FINALE Miami’s pitching staff gave up eight earned runs last night, boosting its July ERA from 2.59 to 2.79. The Marlins had entered the day first in the Majors in team ERA for July, ahead of St. Louis (2.88). Instead, the Fish slipped to second, just one point behind the Cardinals (2.78) in the final rankings for the month. It would have been the first time Miami led the Majors in ERA in a calendar month since June 2006, when it posted a 2.73. Nonetheless, it was the third-best monthly ERA in Club history, behind a 2.28 in April 2005 and the 2.73 from June 2006. It was just the fourth time in Club history that the Marlins posted a sub-3.00 ERA for a calendar month (exclud- ing March & October), with the fourth being a 2.86 in September 1996. The bullpen, which surrendered five of the earned runs last night, just missed out on setting a new Club standard. It entered the game with a 1.16 ERA, but finished at 1.72. That was still the best mark in the Majors for July, ahead of Arizona (1.78), but the 1.16 would have been a new Club record by the ‘pen for a calendar month. It was still the second-best in Club history, however, behind a 1.58 in June 1993, and ahead of a 2.11 in April 2005. - Stats LLC MARLINS VS. The Marlins are 1-3 on this homes-tand after dropping a midweek set to Washington (1-2), and will conclude the ‘stand with three games against the Mets (August 3-5). Today’s National Anthem will be performed by Rody Lafrance, and ceremonial first pitches will be thrown out by Salt-N-Pepa, who are also performing a postgame concert on the West Plaza.

San Diego leads the all-time series, 90-80, and is 47-42 in South Florida, but is just 4-7 at Marlins Park.

Jose Ureña (oo-rey-nya), recalled from Triple-A New Orleans yesterday, is making his eighth start and 10th appearance of season tonight. Recall marks third stint with Marlins this year, most recent from May 26-July 1. Joined Major League club for first time on April 13, making two relief appearances before being sent down on April 21. Returned to Miami on May 26 to make first career start at Pittsburgh and made seven turns through rotation before being optioned on July 1.

Following option on July 1, made five starts with NOLA, going 2-1 with 4.45 ERA (30.1 ip/15 er). On season, has gone 6-1 with one complete game and 2.66 ERA in 11 starts with Zephyrs.

Made Major League debut on April 14 at Atlanta, allowing one hit in 1.0 score-less inning of work. In second appearance, April 18 at Mets, gave up three runs on three hits (one home run) in 2.0 innings.

Optioned to NOLA on April 21 made four starts with Z’s prior to second recall. In those four games, went 3-0 with 1.32 ERA (27.1 ip/4 er). Went 7.0+ innings in three of four starts.

Recalled again on May 26 and made first career start that night against Pittsburgh. Took loss after giving up five runs, 10 hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Earned first Major League victory on June 12 vs. Colorado. Held Rockies to one run on six hits (one home run) while striking out one and walking none over a career-high 6.2 innings.

In first start after July 2 option, tossed fifth career complete game, but first 9.0-inning CG. Marked third career shutout, yielding just five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Ran career-best MiLB winning streak to nine games in final start before break, despite allowing a season-high five runs to Round Rock on July 9. Eight hits allowed were most this season, while six strikeouts also marked season-high.
