MIAMI MARLINS (64-83) RHP Jose Fernandez (5-0, 2.06) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (75-71) RHP Max Scherzer (12-11, 2.91) NATIONALS PARK, WASHINGTON, DC Friday, September 18, 2015 – 7:05 P.M. FISH BITES Miami and Washington square off in game two of this four-game weekend set tonight at Nationals Park (7:05 p.m.). The Marlins will send right-hander Jose Fernandez to the mound for the start; he is 3-0 with a 0.58 ERA in five career starts against the Nats, all of which being at Marlins Park. Washington will counter with right-hander Max Scherzer, who is 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA in five career starts against the Fish. This is the second leg of a seven-game road trip for Miami; the trek began with a 2-1 series win against the Mets. The Marlins entered this trip following a 6-3 homestand, earning 2-1 series wins over the Mets, Milwaukee, and Washington. Following this series, the Club returns to South Florida for its final homestand of the season, a six-game stretch against Philadelphia (September 22-24) and Atlanta (Sept. 25-27). VS. THE NATIONALS The Marlins lead the season series, 9-7, marking their only winning record versus an NL East rival in 2015. Miami has gone 6-3 against the Nats at home, and are just 3-4 at Nationals Park. Since 2008, Miami has gone 36-34 at Nationals Park and own a 48-49 record overall in DC. The Marlins lead the all-time series, 198-172. LAST NIGHT Miami opened the four-game series with a 6-4 win over Washington at Nationals Park. The Marlins wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Dee Gordon led off the game with a hit and came around on Martin Prado’s ninth home run of the season. The Nationals tied the game in the second, and the score remained 2-2 until the fifth. In the inning, Miguel Rojas led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jarred Cosart. Gordon scored Rojas on a sac fly, and following singles by Christian Yelich and Prado, Justin Bour deposited his 18 th home run of the year into the right-field seats. Cosart (2-4) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits (one home run) and three walks, while striking out four in 6.0 innings. A.J. Ramos was summoned with two outs in the eighth to record his 28 th save of the year. THE SPARK BEFORE THE FLASH Dee Gordon led off last night’s game with a single to center field. It was the 36 th time this season he has led off a game with a hit, marking the second-most by any Major League leadoff hitter this season. Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon has done so 39 times. The Marlins record for most leadoff hits in a single season is 54, done by Juan PIerre in 2004 (Stats LLC). In the third inning, after collecting his NL-leading 53 rd multi-hit game, Gordon stole his 52 nd base, marking the sixth-most stolen bases by a Marlins player in a single season and most since Pierre’s 57 in 2005. NATIONAL TREASURE In his career, Jose Fernandez has gone 3-0 with a 0.58 ERA (31.0 ip/2 er) in five starts against the Washington Nationals. His 0.58 ERA is the third-lowest career ERA of any active pitcher against a single opponent (min. 5 starts). Hisashi Iwa- kuma sports the lowest ERA against any team with a 0.21 ERA (42.1/1) in six starts against Minnesota, while Bud Norris ranks second with a 0.43 ERA (41.2/2) in six starts against the Angels. - Stats LLC NECK AND NECK The Marlins have a 9-7 lead in the season series with the Nats, and are looking to earn their first season series win since 2011 (11-7) in this four-game finale. The Clubs have played each other extremely close this year, as Miami holds a lead of just one in run differential (53-52). That is tied with Kansas City-White Sox (66-65, respectively) and Philadelphia-Miami (55-54) for the second-lowest run differential in a division-rival series this year, behind the Cubs and Cincinnati, who are tied at 73 runs apiece. - Stats LLC FINISHING STRONG The Marlins are off to a MLB best 11-4 start in September, their best opening to a month this season. Miami’s .293 (147x501) team average this month leads the National League, in front of Washington (.287; 161x561). The Club’s 3.31 team ERA ranks fourth, behind the Dodgers (3.11), Cubs (3.13), and Giants (3.25). Miami’s current ERA would rank as the third-best for September in Club history, behind a 2.86 mark in 1996 and a 3.20 in 2011. Miami by far is experiencing the best September turnaround in the Majors from 2014 to 2015. The Fish are 11-4 (.733) this month, compared to 11-16 (.407) last year, an improvement of .326. The next closest team on that list is the Cubs, who were 12-13 (.480) in 2014 and are 11-5 (.688) in 2015 (+.208). Boston (+.148; .423/11-15 to .571/8-6), Seattle (+.148: .519/14- 13 to .667/10-5), and Arizona (+.131: .269/7-19 to .400/6-9) round out the top five. - Stats LLC FINDING A WAY Over Miami’s first 36 games with Giancarlo Stanton on the disabled list, the Club went 13-23 and averaged just 3.3 runs per game, with 19 home runs, 111 RBI, a .243 average, a .299 on-base percentage, and a .350 slugging percentage. Over their last 36 games, however, the Marlins have begun to figure out how to produce runs without their three-time All-Star right fielder. Over that span, the Club has gone 21-15, averaging 4.3 runs per game, with 28 home runs, 147 RBI, a .278 average, .322 OBP, and a .414 slugging percentage. - Stats LLC BEAST OF THE EAST Dee Gordon, who extended his hitting streak against the Mets to 17 games in their season-series finale Wednesday night, and had a Club-record 35 hits against New York this season, is finding divisional play in the NL East very much to his liking in his first year with Miami. Gordon has a .368 (93x253) average against his division this season, which ranks third, trailing Chris Colabello (.388 vs. AL East) and just percentage points behind Anthony Rendon (.368 vs. NL East) in the Majors. Gordon is batting .359 (23x64) vs. Washington this season, with a hit in all seven games he has played at Nationals Park (.355/11x31). He has a nine-game hitting streak (.350/14x40) at this venue dating back to 2014. - Stats LLC SEAT OF POWER Justin Bour hit his 18 th home run of the season last night, tying him with Carlos Correa for third among Major League rookies, behind Joc Pederson (25) and Kris Bryant (24). It’s the most HR by a Marlins’ rookie since Giancarlo Stanton (22) and Gaby Sanchez (19) in 2010, and ranks seventh all-time, behind Dan Uggla (27 in 2006). Bour has homered four times against Washington this season, all of them coming at Nationals Park. He has homered in three straight games in DC, and has a six-game hitting streak against the Nats overall (.273/6x22). Bour is batting a healthy .300 (12x40) against the Nats this season, but that is only his third-best average against an NL East opponent. He is hitting .359 vs. the Mets and .308 vs. Philadelphia. Fernandez is now 16-0 with a 1.11 ERA in his 25 starts at home. Among players to debut since earned runs became an official statistic in 1912 (N.L.) and 1913 (A.L.), only Ferdie Schupp had a lower ERA in his first 25 home starts - Schupp posted a 1.05 ERA in his first 25 home starts for the New York Giants from 1913-1917. Among players to debut in the live ball era (since 1920), Fernandez’s 1.11 ERA in his first 25 home starts is by far the lowest, below Vida Blue (1.40), Ewell Blackwell (1.56), Jerry Koosman (1.62), and Dwight Gooden (1.71). - Elias
