On this Fourth Advent Sunday, our preparation season is coming to a close and we soon will celebrate that joyful Christmas season. We are in the last days of getting our hearts and minds ready to welcome the Christ child and be ready for what his birth means for our own salvation. So deep is God’s love, that he sent his only Son for us.

Saint Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus has Saint Joseph preparing with the convincing of an angel. While we do not have the luxury of an angel coming to us, we have been given so many resources to ready ourselves for Jesus. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that Emmanuel’s birth will come through a virgin! God has always willed to live among creation and God would even become one of us so that we might become sons and daughters! This is salvation history and it is the story that we love to tell. Saint Paul reiterates that same joyful message that it is really all about Jesus’ coming. He was foretold by the prophets and born of the virgin always being fully God in our midst!

As we ready ourselves for Christmas, may we always remember that God is Emmanuel and that God lives among us! God makes himself known in so many ways, we just have to be open to recognizing his presence. Of course, we know that Jesus abides with us in the Eucharist, God is known in the Sacred Scriptures, our prayers are powerful and strengthen our relationship with God, faithful worship allows us to know God’s presence. Faith is that great gift we have been given to sense that God is always near and never far, at all times accessible, continually in our midst!

God bless you, Father Michael Kaluza

THE LITURGICAL YEAR

As we continue through our journey of Advent, we remember that Advent marks the beginning of our Church Liturgical year. The liturgical year is made up of six seasons:

♦ Advent - four weeks of preparation before thecelebration of Jesus' birth

♦ Christmas - recalling the Nativity of Jesus Christand his manifestation to the peoples of the world

♦ Lent - a six-week period of penance before Easter

♦ Sacred Paschal Triduum - the holiest "Three Days"of the Church's year, where the Christian peoplerecall the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus

♦ Easter - 50 days of joyful celebration of the Lord'sresurrection from the dead and his sending forth ofthe Holy Spirit

♦ Ordinary Time - divided into two sections (onespan of 4-8 weeks after Christmas Time and anotherlasting about six months after Easter Time), whereinthe faithful consider the fullness of Jesus' teachingsand works among his people

The mystery of Christ, unfolded through the cycle of the year, calls us to live his mystery in our own lives. This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the saints, celebrated by the Church throughout the year. There is no tension between the mystery of Christ and the celebration of the saints, but rather a marvelous harmony. The Blessed Virgin Mary is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son, and the feasts of all the saints proclaim the wonderful works of Christ in his servants and offer the faithful fitting examples for their imitation. In the feasts of Mary and of the saints, the Paschal Mystery of Christ is proclaimed and renewed. Liturgical Calendar.png Source: USCCB.org

MARY QUEEN OF PEACE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL JANUARY 2020

The Church regards the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, as so important that it is a Holy Day of Obligation.

On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our own salvation. Christ’s Birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat: “Be it done unto me according to Thy Word.”

Mary Queen of Peace Pray for Us!

Pope Francis’ 10 New Year’s Resolutions for You Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? If not, there's still time, and Pope Francis has some ideas for you. These are the ten things that he called upon Vatican employees to do: 1. “Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, becausethis is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are.” 2. “Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones notjust money, but most of all your time, attention and love.” 3. “Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faithinto life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy.” 4. “Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence.” 5. “Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving thosewho have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others.” 6. “Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord.” 7. “Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devourour interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people.” 8. “Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness thatleads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation.” 9. “Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker … the elderly, thesick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this.” 10. “Making sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not aboutshopping.” From an address of His Holiness Pope Francis, Monday, 22 December 2014 ________________________________________________________

Dear Parishioners,

There is so much to be grateful for at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic

School. MPQ is growing! We are thrilled to share that enrollment is

increasing in both preschool and grades K-5. There are 90 students, 67

families, including 9 new K-5 families and 17 new preschool families.

The preschool program is bubbling with enthusiasm, energy and excitement

in the brand new 3/4 and 4/5 year old classrooms. We are blessed to have

such talented, dedicated and committed staff who continue to participate in

Catholic Schools Center of Excellence (CSCOE) workshops to exceed best practices in curriculum

instruction, faithful beginnings and current licensing requirements for the new space in the Parish Life

Center. Preschool registration for 2020-2021 will open on Wednesday, January 15. Currently, our

preschool program is at full capacity for 2019-2020. Preschool placement for both classrooms will begin

Monday, February 3 on a first come basis for families registered at this time.

We are extremely proud of the academic progress at MQP. In the spring of 2019, 96% of students

scored above the 50th percentile (National Average) in math and 87% of students in grades 1-5

scored above the 50th percentile in reading. This is AWESOME! Congratulations to our amazing

teachers and staff, Mrs. Johnsen, Mrs. Bolduc, Mrs. Weinkauf, Ms. Kempinger, Ms. Drivas, Mrs. Ludwig

and Mrs. Krueger.

The annual Catholic United Financial Catholic Schools Raffle begins Friday, January 17 and runs through

Sunday, March 1, 2020. Be sure to purchase your chance at the grand prize of a 2020 Buick Encore or

$20,000 in cash! Many more prizes are available too. 100% of each $5 ticket sold stays with our school,

thanks to the raffle sponsor Catholic United Financial. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase in the

school office, parish office, and after Mass each week. Thank you for your support!

MQP students and staff are working hard to prepare for a Catholic Schools Week Open House

immediately following the 10:00 Mass on Sunday, January 26, 2020. All are welcome, we hope to see

alumni, family and friends to celebrate in the PLC. Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of

Catholic education in the United States. The theme for 2020 is “Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead and

Succeed.” CSW is a time to honor faith formation, academic achievement, service work, teachers and

staff, volunteers, and the dedication of the parish community.

We are grateful for your kindness, generosity and support of our school. I wish you a Merry Christmas

and a Happy New Year!

Peace and Joy,

Mrs. Hamill

Principal
