  • If we want to properly understand the readings for the first Sunday of Lent, we must go back in spirit to a period when the Christian community entered the season of Lent preoccupied with two main concerns: closing ranks around the catechumens (those preparing for Baptism at Easter) and taking seriously the need for on-going conversion from sin of the already baptized. In this dual way, Lent is a preparation for Easter. During Lent we are to evaluate our behavior and determine if we are in need of a course correction on our faith journey to the Lord. One way to do this to reflect on the choices we make during the course of an average day. Some choices are easy to make: where to go for dinner, what clothes to wear, how to highlight one’s hair, what movie to see, what Mass at attend. Life is filled with those kinds of choices that add color and texture and vibrancy to our otherwise everyday routine, these choices keep us from becoming stale and boring. Some choices are more serious especially those involving the abuse of drugs, or alcohol, or binging on food. Such unhealthy choices are irresponsible and destructive leading to sinful behavior. Today we hear how Jesus is led into the desert by the Spirit to fast and pray and is tempted by the devil to make irresponsible choices. The devil tempts Jesus: 1) to be self-sufficient…”turn these stones into bread” but he refuses. God alone will be his food: 2) to show off pow-er…leap from the temple roof top…again he refuses. He will live by the power of God: 3) idolatry…”these king-doms can be yours” but Jesus refuses. Glory and adoration are reserved for God alone. Jesus refuses the Big Lie, that we can somehow do it all ourselves and not be dependent on God. We too face such choices. Why do we continually make irresponsible choices, to seek power and control rather than God? We have after all, the same ability to make the choices Jesus made. The story of Adam and Eve gives us a clue. In the beginning God breathed into Adam the “breath of life.” Human life began rooted in God. Yet Adam and Eve fail to trust in God after being tempted by the serpent, the lord of lies. They turn away from God to seek out their own way and that leads them to make irresponsible choices and fall into sin. Are the choices we make life-giving and reflec-tive of the “breath of life” God breathed into our souls, or do they feed into the Big Lie of the devil? Lent is the sea-son when we can reverse the Big Lie of the Garden of Eden and embrace the Big Truth of the Garden of Geth-semane, where along with Jesus we will be able to pray to God “not as I will, but let your will be done.”

    Fr. Bill

  • A Sacristan's role is to see that everything is in readiness to ensure that the liturgy is both prayerful and orderly without unnecessary distrac-tion. Below is a basic listing of the more common duties during mass: • Arrive 30 minutes before mass begins. • Greet the priest so he knows who is on duty, and if there is a visit-ing priest, offer help or answer any questions he may have. • Ensure the lights are turned up to full level by 15 minutes before mass begins. • If incense is required for a particular mass, the Sacristan should have the charcoals burning by 15 minutes before mass. • Select gift bearers for the mass and explain when they are to meet you in the foyer for line up and what is expected of them. Many times we use young children so a walk through is also an option before mass. Re-explain the basics again as you line them up and hand them the gifts, and finally, instruct them to begin when the priest is ready. • Ensure the candles are lit (altar servers are to light the candles). • Be alert and flexible both before and during mass in case anything arises that needs your assistance. • Ensure the candles are snuffed out after mass (altar servers are to put out the candles). • Dim the lights down a level immediately after mass, then dim one level further before leaving (the lights are shut off completely by others after the last mass of the day). • If you're interested, please call the church office at (713) 864-2653 and leave your number and one of the co-chairs will contact you. We can start training immediately!
